So the FDF didn't stretch to providing something like these?
Heh, no. Armies can waste millions into high-end killing technology, but are notoriously cheapskate when it comes to providing basic equipment for grunts. And I was in no position to throw any ideas to R&D...

Though I figure it would have done little good. We did have leather gloves as well (for non-field dress) but only few us had thin enough fingers to fit it inside the trigger guard. Besides, any fabric inbetween tended to mess up the touch to trigger safety so most of us would probably have fired bare-handed regardless.

Did you volunteer, or did this apply to you, making you a permanent reservist?
Conscripted, like dozens of others. So no need to overtly glorify the experience. When I was in, I mostly spent my days counting to the moment when I would be out. Now that I'm out, it's pretty much the same, minus the counting.

I guess I'm a reservist... at least technically. It's been years and I haven't got a single call to refresher training. *Knocks on wood* Must be another cost thing or something, since I think they recently even changed the law to dodge those calls ****-easy.

Was? Zat is no MP-44. Zee must call it STG-44, Der Fuehrer himself demands it!

Have you ever read the book The Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer? While its authenticity may be in doubt, I vowed never to complain about being cold again after reading it. (Though in Britain it's hard not to talk about the weather).

I'd have felt the same way.

In these parts, most of us are pretty accustomed to the cold, service or no service. And the complaining? That's nothing but a popular way to pass the time... at least in the FDF.

And yeah, I'm aware of that book.

The 'Nazis' operating Photobucket have been shredding images containing the Swastika again.

There's an apparent cure for this: make the 'offending' album Private instead of Public.

Let the remains of the Mechanic be a test:

(They deleted that one once before).

Got this today.

A Colt Cavalry .44 made by the apparently renowned, but now defunct, CMC of Tokyo, Japan.

(Incidentally, CMC were also the initials of Colt's Manufacturing Company, founded 1836).

You would think seeing a ton of Indiana Jones photos next to those would scream "He's no Nazi, he's an Indy fan!!!!!!" The censors must have missed the Indy films. You big ole Nazi you!!!! :)

Good to see that the mechanic still has time to bleed.

A little haul of shiny things from yesterday.

Reich Luftshutz (Air Defence) enamel badge:

100_0939.jpg

NSKK ? Kriegskraftfahrerin (Wartime Women Driver) enamel badges:

100_0937.jpg

100_0923.jpg

Deutsche Kinderschar NSF enamel badge:

100_0933.jpg

The Kinderschar encompassed children aged 6-10 years who met once a week under the leadership of a fully trained National Socialist Frauenschaft nursery school teacher.

Dank Der SS Fur Treue Hilfe I.D. Kampfzeit (SS Honorary Members ?Thank you?) enamel badge:

100_0932.jpg

Deutsch Jungvolk Shooting Silver Award enamel badge (The DJ was for boys aged 10-14):

100_0930.jpg

Hitler Jugend (Youth) enamel membership badge (The HJ was for boys aged 14-18):

100_0943.jpg

Hitler Jugend Marksman Award enamel badge:

100_0929.jpg

National Socialist Arbeitsdienst Abteilung 4/305 Braunschweig enamel badge:

100_0928.jpg

This one is a presumed fantasy badge, as there was no Reichsarbeitsdienst ( RAD, Reich Labour Service) Apparently there was never a section 4/305 in Braunschweig, though the badge is based on a real design.

I thought this was a good idea at the time. It didn't take long to reflect that it was a mistake, much like those Medicom Indy figures!

It's supposed to be a replica of a Luftwaffe dress sword...

100_0947.jpg

100_0946.jpg

The scabbard is wrong, too, like that of an over-sized chained dagger.

It's going, and not a moment too soon.

Something definitely got lost in editing back there!

Of course there was a RAD, but there was no Reichsarbeitsdienst section 4/305 in Braunschweig...

That sword went, and much faster than I'd expected.

I'm surprised how many times people have dropped in here to check out my junk.

I'm not always sure what's going to appear in here myself. But there is something that's an almost certainty. There's a storm coming. At some point in the future it will probably be raining Hot Toys.

In preparation I've boxed up a couple of dozen figures. The only problem now is that the mirrors in the cases are more visible, thereby making my usual poor camera work even worse.

This is a stab at a copy of a Schutzpolizei dress bayonet:

100_0968.jpg

The Schutzpolizei were the German uniformed police force. The bayonet was the standard sidearm for policemen under the rank equivalent of warrant officer. Some were functional and could be fitted to a rifle, while others were intended as decoration for the dress uniform. In 1941 the police bayonet ceased to be manufactured and was replaced by Wehrmacht issue. In 1943 the bayonet was finally replaced by the pistol as the policeman?s standard sidearm, for all but ceremonial occasions.

At least this copy looks better than the sword. Though there is an odd anomaly: the scabbard is wrong again ? it?s a dagger-sized version of the scabbard the sword should have had!

Danziger Luftschutzbund (Danzig Air Defence Association) enamel badge. A contentious item that may or may not have existed:

Help! What is this? An enamel badge depicting a gold swastika. Not an easy thing to search for answers on as there isn't much to go on:

Appears to be a quite standard-looking NSDAP membership badge, which makes me quite sure you're not asking something as elementary as that.

I haven't seen too many without any kind of lettering, which does make it a bit curious though. The type didn't pop up in any quick searches I made to different collectors' catalogues. Perhaps a later-day replica? Anything on the backside?

The seller didn't know what it was either. There's nothing on the reverse. There's often something on the back of these things, even if it's just to replicate an orginal maker's mark.

During the Nazi era badges that were were produced officially were given an RZM number:

The German WWII RZM numbers - The German armed forces during WWII were very particular about the consistency and quality of the badges, medals, uniforms, daggers and many other items they employed. As the size of the armed forces grew so did the need for the items listed above. The need to centralize the control of quality was pressing.

This need gave birth to the Reichszeugmeisterei organization, also known as RZM. This organization was based at the Brown house in Munich and Nazi party headquarters in Berlin.

The RZM ensured that the manufacturers of military items were consistent in design, quality of materials and other characteristics of the items. It also defined standards of design, manufacturing and quality and published an authoritative color chart for textiles.

The RZM issued a number to companies so they could place it in the product they were authorized to produce. The RZM code was usually accompamied by a logo formed by the letters RZM which was contained in a circle with the letter M at the bottom.

http://www.quanonline.com/military/military_reference/german/dagger_basics.html

Other badges were produced unoffically to support the party. This may be a replica of one of those.

On the other hand, as you suggest, Finn, it might be a product of the imagination of latter day producers.

Yup, it made way for the new Lego Marvel sets in the early hours this morning. For some reason I woke up at half-past midnight, and after my regular pre-dawn 3 mile run I was looking for something to do:

Then at a more reasonable hour I put up the Schutzpolizei bayonet:

A chance Brotherhood message by my buddy Rocket (gone but never forgotten!) inspired me to go digging under the bed for some long lost artifacts.

Behold my childhood collection of vintage Mego figures!

Shazam; Batman (two cape colour variations); Robin; Joker and Batmobile which incredibly still has all its stickers intact:

100_0978.jpg

The Hulk; Spider-Man (regular); Spider-Man (Fist-Fighting acttion) and The Lizard:

100_0979.jpg

Ursus (the black faced gorilla that I always thought was just another soldier); Gorilla Soldier (brown face); Galen (and probably Cornelius - it's hard to tell them apart); Zira; Urko and Zaius:

100_0977.jpg

Star Trek Kirk; Keeper; Neptunian; Spock (with Scotty's shirt); McCoy and
Transporter:

100_0975.jpg

Unknown pirate; Sir Launcelot [sic] (looks like Richard Burton! Apparently because Burton played Arthur in the Broadway Musical Camelot); Ivanhoe; Buffalo Bill Cody; Sitting Bull and another Zaius:

You mixed up Ursus and Urko. The one with the helmet is Ursus.;) As for differentiating between Cornelius & Galen...good luck!

Anyway, I wish I still had all of my MEGO ape stuff (including the big, tree house playset). I envy you Smiffy!:D

Seems like the one in the helmet was released as both Urko and Ursus!

My latest Hot Toys - Robert Patrick as the T-1000 from Terminator 2.

Not the best pictures, but I wanted to get some shots of him before I wrestled him into the motorcycle cop gear.
