Which fedora should I get?

I was going to get another Indiana Jones Store $42 fedora but it seems like the Federation IV by Akubra is a much better deal for the money. I can't afford an AB yet. Is the Fed IV good quality and close to screen accurate? Should I explore other options?

There are more choices for accurate looking and affordable Indy hats now than there ever have been. The new Federations look great, but some people seem to be having trouble getting ones that fit them properly.

Another option is the Christy's Adventurer sold by hornetshats.com. I ordered one and paid $97.00 plus postage. It's actually the same hat that was used in the first 3 movies, but sold under a different brand name and for hundreds of dollars less than a Herbert Johnson Poet. You pay a lot just for the HJ label.

The Keppler has also become quite popular lately as have offerings by Camptown and Jimmy Pierce. Camptown is now using AB's Raiders block.

AB is planning to introduce a factory-made version that you won't have to wait a year to get, and this hat is now in the prototype phase. It probably won't be as inexpensive as was originally hoped when it is finally available to buy.

There are informative threads about all these hats at Club Obi Wan.

What exactly do you mean, the same as used in the first 3 movies? Like same materials/craftmanship and everything??
Because that's exactly why I would want an AB

I would totally get that one

Is it durable? good for everyday use?

Yes, from what I understand it is exactly the same hat you would get if you bought an HJ, which is the brand that was used in the first 3. As far as durability goes, it depends on how you intend to use it. It should be fine for everyday light wear, but if you need a hat that can take a lot of rough treatment in all kinds of weather, you'd be better off with a Federation, at these lower price points. They have a reputation for being extremely tough.

Easybox is completely right about the Federations. I bought a Fed regular almost a year ago, and it has stood up fantastically. Even after all the abuse it has suffered. The Fed IV is a great looking hat and should hold up just as well.

But if you want a more accurate fedora (closer to the first 3) I would go for an Adventurer. However, being made of the same material as the Herbert Johnson Poet, it will be less durable as an Adventurebilt or even the Federation. Since I have a Federation already (less accurate than the Fed IV, however), I chose to order a Christy's Adventurer from Hornets Hats.

In what ways is the Fed IV inaccurate?

Would anyone in the general public of movie goers be able to tell or would they instantly realize that as an Indy replica?

The only thing I can see that is inaccurate is the color. The regular Federations are too grey. They even look a little green. The Fed Deluxe is a better color, and the Fed IV (regular and deluxe) have a good color. It's still not as accurate as a Herbert Johnson or Aventurebilt.

If you're going for an accurate, durable Indy fedora, I'd get a Fed IV. The guys at Hats Direct even consulted with Marc and Steve of Adventurebilt.

Any body got a comment on the Akurba Adventurer fedora that is being offered by David Morgan? I was considering one of those.

I'd get the one closet to the one the Legend himself, Indiana Jones wears.

The David Morgan has a more tapered or slanted crown. Hats with tapered crowns look more or less like this: / \. The Federations have the Raiders stovepipe crown. It looks like this: l l. The Federations also have a more accurate ribbon and bow.

Probably the best deal in Indy hats right now is not the Morgan Adventurer, but the Christy's Adventurer from www.hornetshats.com. This is actually the same hat that Ford wore in the first three movies, but sold under a different brand name and at greatly reduced cost.

What color is the accurate color of Christy's Adventurer? They have a Sable and a Light sable, Cork and Peat Wood. I am looking for a close to accurate fedora I can get, but also one that can take abuse and weather too. Any help guys/gals?

Light Sable is the preferred Indy color for the Christy's, but either shade of Sable should work well because the difference is slight. If you need a more rugged hat at an affordable price, the Akubra Federations are probably your best choice.

Does anyone have candid photos of this hat, rather than the one featured on the website? This looks like a really nice hat for the money. I just wondered if anyone owned one and what their thoughts were. I've been looking at buying an AB but they are somewhat pricey

There are pics of a Christy's Adventurer posted yesterday by Mr. Fusion in the Guide to Gear and Props Sticky thread.
