Will Batman beat Indy at box office like in 1989?

Anyone that thinks Batman was original for kids?doesn?t know much about Batman. He was arguably darker in his first year of publication then he is even today. He actually killed people and carried a gun. Sounds unbelievable, huh? Look it up! I?m completely serious. Then Batman slowly degraded into something he wasn?t. He went from a dark and grim creature of the night to utter camp. The late 60?s brought him back to his gothic and psychological roots. Batman Begins was the Batman film that educated Batman fans have been waiting for. If you want the 50?s Batman, go watch the Schumacher films.

How do you want to spin this question?

Are we talking about US only? Or Worldwide?

Obviously, the true winner is the one that makes the most worldwide.

That will be Indy.

We shall see, but I say doubtful.

Hm, I believe Batman shot one thug.
He wasn't a murdering vigilante.
But I haven't read those comics in a while...

I actually love the kiddie Batman comics from the 50's & 60's.
And I enjoy some of the Batman kid's comics today - they are sometimes better than the mainstream Batman stories!

It was more then once. Sure looks like a murdering vigilante to me. It was short lived, but you can't argue with the evidence.

I just wanted to add, that Burton's Batman Returns is probably the closet to the Batman from the first year of publication. Batman Begins is the closest to the Batman of the 80s, 90s, and present. Both of them are far different from the kid pandering Schumacher (sp) films.

Indy had a smash opening, but I still think Dark Knight will top it (at least domestically). I also think DK will last longer at the top of the box office than Indy did, but Indy will crush Bats in future DVD sales (if for no other reason than the multiple re-releases Lucas is probably envisioning and salivating over even as I type this).

It depends on how word-of-mouth ends up being for Indy 4. The online backlash will probably hurt it among younger demographics, but Indy tilts towards an older crowd anyway. And so far, older audiences don't seem to have as many problems with it.

Some interesting demographic breakdowns from IMDB:

Males (47,292 votes, 7.2 rating)
Females (6,402 votes, 7.3 rating)
Aged under 18 (3,576 votes, 8.2 rating)
Males under 18 (2,889 votes, 8.2 rating)
Females under 18 (681 votes 7.7 rating)
Aged 18-29 (37,115 votes. 7.2)
Males Aged 18-29 (32,878 votes, 7.2 rating)
Females Aged 18-29 (4,087 votes, 7.5 rating)
Aged 30-44 (10,842 votes, 6.9 rating)
Males Aged 30-44 (9,534 votes, 6.9 rating)
Females Aged 30-44 (1,194 votes, 7.0 rating)
Aged 45+ (2,068 votes, 7.1 rating)
Males Aged 45+ (1,666 votes, 7.1 rating)

I'm thinking TDK may win (but not by much). Problem w/ these kinds of things is that there are so many factors! Indy has the original generation that saw it in theatres, the VHS generation, film buffs, adventure fans, Shia lovers, etc. TDK has the innumerable Batman fans, Christian Bale/Chris Nolan/Heath Ledger fans, those who go in respect for Heath (RIP). Just too many factors!

I don't know about it being #1 of the summer, because even a movie like Narnia, which was predicted to make bank, bombed. But TDK will be huge.

More importantly, I can guarantee that TDK will be the best movie of the summer in terms of quality. The plot will be engrossing, and with a near-3 hour runtime, the subplots should be interesting as well. It will be a dark beast.

KOTCS was a very good movie. Not excellent, and I am aware of its flaws, but TDK will be a much better film. At least KOTCS is better than Iron Man though. The whole time I was watching that, I was thinking, "Would I ever watch this again?"

I LOVED Iron Man, and I *really* liked KOTCS. It's a flawed but very entertaining film. It doesn't really compare to the previous three flicks, but that doesn't mean it's a BAD movie, now does it?

But yeah, I agree... The Dark Knight is definitely gonna be the best summer movie in terms of quality, especially if Nolan and his team improve over Batman Begins, which was pretty awesome in its own right. And in terms of box office... who knows, it's gonna be a pretty close battle between Indy and Batman. I hope Indy wins, though... :p

TDK will butcher KOTCS in the box office. Sure, Indy fans waited 19 years for KOTCS, but the difference is Batman fans know they will receive quality. The majority will leave satisfied with what they have seen, something Indy fans have not done.

I just can't see TDK putting up such HUGE numbers. Indy 4 is almost a lock for 325 million domestic/800 million worldwide. Thats bigger than Pirates 1, Attack of the Clones, Transformers worldwide. Batman Begins didn't have close to that amount, and even though the sequel should be gangbusters, plus the whole Ledger thing, I don't think its gonna be number 1. It'll be close though, and definitely not a "slaughter" as you so elegantly put it. If anything, Iron Man is the number movie. Wall-E might surprise me though.

I don't see TDK doing this kind of money. I'm thinking a # 4 or 5 spot behind Iron Man, Indy, Hancock & maybe Hulk. Hulk actually has more public anticipation than IM did, from what I've heard.

I don't think anything will beat IM, that was an unexpected beast. Though I'd prefer Indy in that spot, I think IM deserves it & it got Marvel a fantastic start.

I'm anticipating THE DARK KNIGHT like crazy, but I just can't see it pulling in the numbers worldwide that it'll need to take down KINGDOM. THE DARK KNIGHT's domestic gross might be massive, but Batman's just never had incredible international appeal.

Am I the only one that has zero interest in the Hulk movie? I could really care less. It's a glorified wrestling match.

If you liked the TV show you'll probably like this one. It's basically a chase movie with a huge battle at the end. I'm looking forward to it more than TDK, of course I like Marvel more than DC. (Batman's the only DC character I like)

I don't really have any hopes for it, though I'll probably go see it to wile away a couple of hours.
