Obviously I understand some changes have to be made to adapt a book to film, but for the most part, if I made movies, I'd look at a book a film was being based on as basically being the script.
In the case of the Lost World I don't know why they strayed, but for a lot of films it's simple... too many unnecessary subplots.
Jaws is a good example. The film works very well as a straight ahead story about men hunting a great white shark as opposed to the book where Mrs. Brody is a whore who has an affair with Hooper, and the mafia subplot with the mayor being forced to keep the beaches open. All of that is really not needed and just consumes screen time ya know? It works very well as an "a to b" adventure.
