Anyway, I found an interview with Amy Hennig from New York Magazine. It's a little dated (10/19), but still definitely worth a read.

Before there was "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune", there was "Uncharted". I wonder if its received an accidental increase in sales. Boy, does it look bad.

And now you have to shoot treasures down in order to claim them? Clever bastards.

Just made it to Locomotion. Seeing it again on my tv, it's just as impressive as it was on the big screen. I'll need to beat down a soldier soon, 'cause I forgot to drop the Dragon Sniper and pick up the AK. Well, at least I have the Pistole...

Update: If you haven't played "Among Thieves" lately, there was an update released over the weekend that included the new multi-player level, "The Fort"! No further DLC appears to have been announced, but Episode 2 of "The Eye of Indra" is available at the Playstation Store for the princely sum of ninety-nine cents. It also exists on Youtube, but only in videos people have taped from their tv; none of them have good image or sound quality.

I do what I can, Ska! Glad you like it. But you're not the only one who hasn't played since beating the solo campaign; a lot of folks abandoned it as soon as Modern Warfare 2 came out. And some even sooner. I logged into the multi-player for the first time the other day, and there were barely five-thousand people on-line during prime hours. That's not good.

I would like to attend this, but I'm lacking the twenty-bucks.

The following was posted on Naughty Dog's blog today (12/3), and is supposed to go into effect over the weekend. Link here.

Based on this poll and other collected community input we have decided to try a couple things out. This weekend we are instituting a “Plunder Only” playlist based on the overwhelming feedback and we’re making one other (temporary) change as well. Rather than add two new playlists at once we are going to try an experiment.

For this Experimental Weekend only, player health in ALL game types will be lowered to 65% of the current player health. This is exactly the same as the Crushing settings, only Boosters will still be allowed. The experimental weekend will run from Friday, December 4 at 10:00 AM PST (what time is that in my city?) through Monday, December 7 at 11:00 AM PST (what time is that in my city?).

We are very interested in hearing from our community on how you feel about this change. Give the various game types a try with these new settings and let us know how you feel by responding to this blog post and our upcoming front page poll.

Be assured we take community feedback very seriously and we can’t wait to hear what you have to say.

Thanks and see you in the game!

Do any of our European friends remember hearing about this? I completely missed it, and am curious as to how "canon" it is. This is the first time I have ever heard Elena's show called "Uncharted." I always assumed that the series gets its moniker 'cause the island from Drake's Fortune was uncharted.

Anyway, check out the Uncharted wikia over here. The page for Drake's Trail can be found over here.

Quote:
Elena Fisher is filming some tombs in Egypt for her television show Uncharted, when she hears word that an explorer named Nathan Drake is onto something big. She wants to find Nathan so that she can film whatever he's after, but as she is too busy in Egypt to look for Drake herself, she hires you, an investigator, to track him down. She believes that he may have attracted some unwanted attention, and that he will therefore be covering his tracks. She gives you the address of Nathan's apartment in Key West, Florida to get you started.
[edit] 1 - Nathan Drake's apartment, Key West, Florida

You follow the address that Elena gave you, and enter Drake's waterfront apartment. After slipping past an attendant, you shove open his door to find his apartment in disarray after a break-in. Nathan is obviously away, so you decide to look around. On his desk are four cards, each of which has a number highlighted; you discover that the numbers, 1588, are the password to Drake's laptop. You look at his e-mails and see that he had to cancel a meeting with Elena because something big has come up, and it can't wait; he elusively hints that Elena should read up on Sir Francis Drake and his love of Spanish gold. He has also been in contact with Victor Sullivan; Nathan told Sully that after reading some old tax records, he believed Sir Francis had a large hidden stash of gold. He mentions how his apartment has been raided, and that whoever is after him has taken the manuscripts, so he has decided to head to Europe to continue his research. Sully is interested, but declines joining Nathan because he is worried about going on a wild goose chase. It appears that Drake has booked a flight with Aurora Air to Trondheim Vaemes via Amsterdam Schiphol. Lastly, Nathan has sent an e-mail confirming that he wishes to view the Kraus collection. You travel to Trondheim in Norway.

Ha! That was actually pretty funny. Thanks for sharing, Ska!

I was browsing the Official PS3 forums last night, and came across this. It's kind of interesting. And an example of how much extra work Naughty Dog put into creating the world of Among Thieves. Though, I wish they would have given Lazarevic's troops actual Serbo-Croat (Georgian? Russian?) dialogue, not heavily accented English. If they couldn't find a couple of actor's capable in Los Angles, the Defense Language Institute in Monterey isn't that far away.

Originally posted on the Gamefaqs forums. I've corrected some of the grammar, but it is otherwise unedited.

Quote:
Being a Nepali I just want to take a post to explain a few things in the game. Frankly I was astounded by how authentic this game is.

1. It really, really looks like Nepal. Although they never mention the name of the city, one can draw the conclusion that it is Kathmandu. One thing you should know is that buildings in Nepal are all made of brick, just as in the game. Very little wood is used in buildings, and never as siding. I was shocked when I first came to the USA and saw wooden buildings.

2. Propane tanks everywhere? Yes, we actually do have propane tanks everywhere; all over the streets, in houses… everywhere. We use gas to cook, and although it may seem like a very convenient video game ploy to get explosions, that is actually very authentic. Most houses have at least two tanks. They are bigger than the ones shown in the game, but hey.

3. Shangri La hotel: yes, it is a real hotel in Kathmandu. However I should mention that the tallest Nepali buildings are like 7 stories high - not quite what you see in the game.

4. Because I am a Sherpa I speak Tibetan, and that is the language spoken by Tenzin and the villagers. Not Nepali. It was so much fun hearing people speak Tibetan because I hadn't heard it in so long. Tenzin even calls Drake a "useless idiot" at one point, which had my sides splitting.

5. Street signs: all real, authentic Sanskrit script advertising food, bars, etc.

Now a few negative points:

1. Train? Nope sorry. Only one train in Nepal and it does not go through the mountains or anything like what is shown in the game.

2. Nepalis? Despite taking place in Nepal where are all the Nepalis? The city is empty except for mercs?

3. Hindu relics in Buddhist temples? Hindu symbols and Hindu Gods carved into the walls of Buddhist temples? Of course hardy anyone will notice and no one will care, but this is an error.

Translated Scenes:

Introduction:

Drake: How did I get here?

Tenzin: Pema, give him some space, go to Schafer's, he's our friend. (referring to Drake not Schafer)

Tenzin: Slowly, don't hurry.

Tenzin: You are very lucky.

Drake: How long have I been out?

Tenzin: Take it drink, drink.

Drake: Thanks.

Tenzin: Drink this, drink this.

Drake: No, no that's plenty.

Tenzin: Your friend has been waiting, can you get up?

Drake: I'm sorry I don't understand.

Tenzin: Get up. Get up.

Drake: Thanks.

Tenzin: Are you feeling ok?

Tenzin: Take this, come Schafer has been waiting for you. (hands Drake a coat and hat.)

Tenzin: He's been waiting to talk to you.

Drake: Where the hell am I?

Tenzin: Come. Come with me.

Ice Caves:

As Tenzin approaches the rope he says "This will be useful. We will use this to go there." (across the chasm)

As he waits on the other side he says: "Come. No need to be scared."

As he approaches the ladder he says: "And come from here."

Before squeezing through the crack Tenzin says: "Oh we have to go through here... it looks hard."

In the meantime he says things like "We need to find our friend's camp." and "Come."

After finding the body he says: "He must be Schafer's man. Look at this."

As the ground collapses: "Let's run!"

As he catches his breath on the other side: "We got into trouble."

When Drake offers to boost Tenzin up: "I don't need. In fact, I will give you a boost. Yes, I will."

When he catches Drake: "Nothing happened. I am here."

After hearing the monster's growl Drake asks "what was that?" and Tenzin replies: "I don't know. It's scary."

Upon finding the dead wolves: "I don't know. The way the animal is killed… it's deadly. It's not good. What is that? (noise) That's not good. This place might have a ghost."

When the monster attacks: "Help me!"

After defeating the monster: "I told you. There was a weird ghost."

After getting a boost and before dropping the box down: "Watch out!"

Then when they get separated: "Okay, I will go from here."

When Drake yells to pull the lever: "Okay."

When he catches Drake again: "I've got you... come up."

While the floors drop behind them: "Fast! Faster! Run fast!"

Upon finding the rest of Schafer's crew: "Come here. Look at this. What's this? I didn't understand you."

When Drake explains about the Nazis: "I don't like them."

When Drake tells him Schafer killed them: "What? No, no."

The very brief conversation at the end of the game between Drake and Tenzin:

Tenzin is saying a prayer "om mani padme hum", which is the same prayer that is written across the giant prayer wheels that you have to spin and put in correct order several times during the game. You will notice Tenzin is also spinning a small prayer wheel. Tenzin says "Schafer would have loved you." but I think it is more to the effect of "Schafer would be proud of you." Drake replies "Thank you" In Tibetan.

On a related note, I have heard that Episodes 3 & 4 of The Eye of Indra is supposed to be on the Playstation Store today. I haven't looked, but will check later.

Finished!

Damn! So I just finished Among Thieves! It took a while - no PS3; had to beat Drake's Fortune - but, man, that was impressive. While there are a couple of things I actually like better in Drake's Fortune, Among Thieves is quite easily the superior outing; and highly deserving of Game of the Year!

Oh - and I definitely appreciate the fact that the finale is more involved than it was in Drake's Fortune! After just under 17-hours of game time, my stats were something like this:

I found - no, claimed forty-nine treasures. Early in the game there were roughly four treasures I could see, but didn't know I could shoot them down. And after five-to-ten minutes of trying to find the proper route to them, I gave up. There were two more in the monastery I shot down, but couldn't grab.

Trophies:

- Survivor (defeat 75 enemies in a row without dying);
- 20 Headshots;
- 100 Headshots (barely earned on the last level);
- Run and Gunner (Kill 20 Enemies w/out aiming);
- Hangman (Kill 20 Enemies w/ gunfire while hanging);
- 50 Kills: 92FS-9mm (Kill 50 Enemies w/ the 92FS-9mm);

- 70 Kills: M4 (Kill 70 Enemies w/ the M4);
- 50 Kills: Dragon Sniper (Kill 50 Enemies w/ the Dragon Sniper);
- 30 Kills: Moss-12 (Kill 30 Enemies w/ the Moss-12);
- 30 Kills: Mk-NDI (Kill 30 Enemies w/ the Mk-NDI grenade);
- Triple Dyno-Might! (Defeat three Enemies w/ one explosion);
- Bare Knuckle Brawler (Defeat 20 Enemies w/ hand-to-hand combat);
- Bare Knuckle Slugger (Defeat 50 Enemies w/ hand-to-hand combat);
- Steel Fist Master (Defeat 20 Enemies w/ a single punch after filling them full of lead);

All in all, not that bad for a first time playthru. Now I need to decide on whether or not to play through it again, pick up a different game, or venture into the on-line component!

How well did you all do on your first time through?

I didn't realize you could shoot down treasure, either...until about chapter 4. And even then, I kept forgetting to search the areas above me for the sparkle. I think I found 73 treasures in all. Not too bad...although I think I only missed 4 in Drake's Fortune.

Quite impressive Ska! I didn't realize it until Chapter 6, and still forgot to look out for the sparkle most of the time. When I did find one it was usually because I noticed it while admiring the scenery! Seriously, it's damn impressive. And while not necessarily game changing, the times when you got to fight in the rain were my my favourite parts followed closely by Chapter 19.

I'll play through them both again, and see if I can't get everything and that platinum trophy.

Good luck! I can't imagine playing either on Crushing mode. I got frustrated enough as it is with Normal (especially Drake's Fortune...some of those fights I had to try over and over).

Yeah the graphics in these games are breathtaking. My favorite is the city background from the rooftops in Nepal (the building with the pool at the top). I don't think I've ever seen better in-game graphics. Just amazing. The gaming world can learn a lot from Naughty Dog.

I know what you mean Ska! I was outflanked quite a few times in Among Thieves, but I thought some of the fights in Drake's Fortune were harder. I'll have to play it again, but I swear they threw more enemies at you in each wave. I'm thinking of that sequence where you have to scurry up the tree after the plane crash, and you must fight off a bunch of pirates with only a bunch of low-lying ruins for cover.

As for the hotel in Among Thieves, that was hilarious! I agree with you about the visuals and the level itself, but I laughed after jumping into the pool and listening to the interplay between Drake and Chloe.

On a related note, Finn, could we rename this thread to something less clunky? How about... oh, Uncharted: The Series. It's direct, to the point, and would cover all types of news.

And now for new business. Naughty Dog has fixed a few of the well-known glitches in the recently released multiplayer map, The Fort. In addition to The Fort, Naughty Dog plans on fixing other exploitable glitches in the multi-player maps in the immediate future.

More DLC is on the way, as you can read. And while I could give a fig about the on-line component, this is definitely good news. I, for one, am hoping to get some kind of single-player side story in the near future as a (possible) go between between the second and third games. Surely Sully was up to something during all that time? Naughty Dog's full post can be read over here.

The folks over at Kotaku.com held a call-in Q&A session with the game director, Amy Hennig, this past Wednesday. Interesting stuff all-around, but the host leaves much to be desired. Gamers make poor call in guests, too. People need to formulate their questions before calling in!

I'd like to share some highlights, but it was all kind of general. Despite the hour length, the rambling nature of the callers and the host kind of torpedoed any real discussion of Uncharted. There's some, but since Ms. Hennig is 'creative talent', she couldn't speak about the tech-esque questions the maroons asked.

General highlights from around the 'net:

- something really cool is coming by year's end;
- Rika Raja, Mr. Pinkerton, and a couple of other MP-skins are available to European PSN users for 2.99;
- Uncharted 3 was already in pre-development before Among Thieves was completed;
- Custom soundtrack isn't something Amy Hennig is interested in.
- Nobody appears to have caught the reference to Topkapi! (Amy Hennig confirmed it for me.)
- People are confused where Turkey actually is, and aren't aware that Tibet is in Asia.
- The complete Eye of Indra motion-comic is available on the Playstation Store

The votes are in! Points have been tallied and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves has hauled in the three biggest awards of the night!

- Best PS3 Game
- Best Graphics
- Game of the Year!

Too bad all they get are one of these really ugly trophies!

I just started playing Uncharted 2 a few nights ago and I'm already loving it. I can definitely see it being the Game of the Year and it's a great franchise all around. I can't wait to see what they come up with for Part Three.

Welcome to the club, MB! Let us know how your trophy & medal count go when you're finished! Feel free to ask anything else as well.

Oh - and please forgive us if we've mentioned any spoilers in this thread. I've tried to be spoiler free while talking about it.

Ticket to Indonesia?

I was very fond of the journal in Among Thieves. It was a nice touch that added a lot to the overall atmosphere. But now, now the random speculation begins. In addition to Elena's phone number, there's another number for a character you meet in the Eye of Indra motion comic. And if you look at the date on the Indonesian visa, you'll notice that it's this Friday.

Could Naughty Dog be announcing something on Friday? An Indonesian side-story?

Uncharted 2 won best game, yet didn't even win it's own genre (action/adventure). I know that it's a video game award show, on Spike TV nonetheless. But doesn't that defy logic? (Assassin's Creed II won best action/adventure btw.) Who knows, but Uncharted 2 definitely deserved best game.

The multiplayer is decent I think, it's definitely different from most shooting games out there, and the jumping and climbing of platforms really mixes it up. There's nothing like pulling an enemy off a roof for an instant kill! Plunder is also a great game mode, when working with a good set of teammates. My one gripe is how some people just spam the grenade launchers in some maps. ie: just getting to that gun first. But doesn't really take away from the experience.

And how you guys were speaking of trophies, has anyone got the trophy for killing 10 enemies in a row with a single punch after softening them with bullets. I believe it's 10 in a row. I was wondering what might be the best level to attempt this on, since the wave of enemies can be a lot to handle, and the added fact that they do flank you.

Here's hoping to some DLC with a side story like Le Saboteur said. But hey, no need to worry at all, knowing there will be a 3rd one! (prequel maybe???)

It does defy logic, but Hugh Jackman & Megan Fox won awards. Why? Because it's a popularity contest. Despite Uncharted's validation, there are plenty of dubious winners in the whole thing. For example, MLB The Show '09 wasn't even nominated for Best Sports Game. How is the most critically acclaimed baseball game ever not even nominated?

I still haven't ventured on-line. I should - really, I should. But I just don't care enough about the on-line component; a lot of people do, but it doesn't really grab my attention. We'll see.

Not yet! I tend to be more cautious in gun combat, and try to avoid getting shot. It doesn't always work, of course, but I did keep my death count below a hundred. While I'm thinking about it though, I would suggest trying it on the hotel level; that's where I had most of mine. If I'm not mistaken, I ended up with six in a row.

So the 18th came and went. No real DLC was announced, but Naughty Dog did issue a new update. Version 1.03 updates Among Thieves to support

* Added Version number to game menu – should display 1.03 after this update
* Added Clan Tags – all players can now add a custom four letter Clan Tag in the Profile Menu (square) to display on-screen before their PSN ID
* Load times have been decreased significantly
* Added “Rematch” functionality
* Adjusted some Boosters for balance
* Addressed issue with Player’s Met screen in game menu and XMB displaying incorrectly
* Addressed issue with Double Cash not doubling medal cash rewards

Naughty Dog's full explanation can be read over here.

It's nice that they're fixing the glitches and refining the multi-player experience, but none of this is what I would call DLC. I still have my fingers crossed for something substantial.

No prequels, please. And no father figures!

For all you...

...budding artists - background, texture, and otherwise - some of the fine folks at Naughty Dog have put up some samples of their work! Take a gander!

Please note that some of the discussion might contain spoilers, or some of the art itself.

So I started playing Drake's Fortune again on Hard, and it's amazing how much of a difference there is with a HDMI cable and not. For one, it's not nearly as dark as it was with normal AV-cables!

Between the two games, does anybody have a favorite level? Mine has to be Chapter 12: Heading Up River from Drake's Fortune. I love running the jet ski up the river.

Uncharted news continues to trickle out.

Naught Dog co-President, Evan Wells, gave an in-depth interview with G4 last week. It's nice to see some candor from a game developer in the general press, and talk about what they're happy, and not so happy, with how the game turned out.

For those of you who were "worried" that Among Thieves would be too "dark", there's a nice little bit in the interview about how they deliberately tried to keep it as light-hearted as possible. Overall, it's a good interview, but the interviewer missed a couple of excellent follow-up questions to some of the points Wells made.

For those of who would like to read it, follow your nose over here.

I'm curious, though: How long does Naughty Dog think they continue with Uncharted? Its combination of shooting, hand-to-hand, and traversal exploration seemingly limits the types of locales Drake can go to. For example, Egypt might be difficult to pull off. As would the Everglades if they get around to doing the Fountain of Youth.

My one complaint, however, is this adherence to an explorer you would have "known from fourth grade social sciences" class. So far they've given us Sir Francis Drake and Marco Polo; now what? You could do de Soto, Cortez, Balboa, Livingstone, Columbus, etc., but you're already limiting the types of stories you could tell. The really interesting explorers you don't hear about until later in your studies.

H.M. Stanley, James Cook, Sir Richard Francis Burton, John Morgan: these are just some of the historical personages one could draw inspiration from.

Thoughts?
