Trailer Censorship Comparisons

Anyone mention the color difference between the trailers? The international one looks less plastic. The gratuitis flag... um yeah it's not some visual touch that benefits the production value/world of the film, silly and embarrassing. The US trailer is quite backward that way, add the flag, lose the guns? Right, an out of character match coming from this country, but very in character in purpose, help make money off the younger kids brought up by idiot parents. Hopefully won't have to fly abroad just to see the real film.

I don't see the American flag as a big deal. It is well established that the character of Indiana Jones is American and this is evident by his accent and the flash back scene in last crusade. When I first saw the flag, I thought it was an establishing shot that the scene was in the USA somewhere and I didn't even think anything of it. If people are offended at the mere sight of the flag then then they really need to lighten up. The gun and pants thing is very strange though and if the guns were edited to point down, then that just shows the overly PC nature of the USA these days. Censorship scares me more than guns. It is sad that a trailer for an Indiana Jones movie which is supposed to be fun and refreshing would bring up so much politics and hostility over the mere sight of a US flag :p.

So after skimming this thread I'm still wondering, are any of you guys suspecting we will get a weirdly neutered Indiana Jones movie, sort of like Live Free or Die Hard? Is this going to be a trailer only issue, or is this kind of censorship going to make its way into the final film?

As for the U.S. flag, when I first saw it I did think of a Michael Bay film or Spiderman, but then it made sense after repeat viewing that it's a location marker. The fact that it was edited out for International audiences is crap! The neverending Anti-American movement is out of hand, and our flag stands for a whole lot more than our current regime.

BTW is KOTCS going to be PG or PG-13 like LC, the most family friendly of all the films?

Indiana Jones is an AMERICAN! If the other countries cant handle that then don't watch it. Did they do the same thing for Spider-Man?? I dont remember hearing anything about it? Maybe Steven is just the Lib we all know he is.

I also think Superman Returns had a line edited, to keep the world happy. "Does he still stand for truth, justice, all that stuff?"

What a lot of crap. Superman has always stood for "Truth, Justice and the American way" I think it is the slow progression of the anti American movement.

Well I am an AMERICAN and what about my feelings?

<a href="http://s151.photobucket.com/albums/s147/tholophotos/?action=view&current=Superman22.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s147/tholophotos/Superman22.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Superman Returns did not edit the line. The original Superman line from the original cartoon series in the 40s did not include "the american way". That line was added to the intro for the 50s live action series in response to the heightened tensions of the cold war. Superman Returns was simply going back to the original way the line was written.

I think the gun censorship had a lot to do with what film they attached the trailer to. They could have had a PG trailer if Spiderwick wasn't intended as a family film.

Looks like Spiderwick might tank at the Box Office too. It opened in 5 place behind all of the crap that came out last weekend.

As far as the flag is concerned I get it, but when the immigrant population gets higher in the US, will we censor our own flag here too?

That's an interesting question!

I agree, the gun censorship was related to the film the trailer was attached to. But, shouldn't the movie trailer have been released with something targeted a bit more for a broader audience. I still don't get why they put this out on Valentine's Day, and not during the Super Bowl?

There seems to be a great deal of confusion about the American flag.

It isn't a shot of a flag which then changes into a shot of the cars approaching the American military base. Its a shot of an American flag blowing in the wind, then the camera panning up to reveal whats BEHIND it, and American military base. Its part of the same shot.

So, its not shameless American propaganda, its just a good way of establishing where the characters are in that scene.

That's true, it's merely a location marker.

Exactly. Its a common way of establishing a location. The camera shows you something vaguely associated with where they are, before panning up to reveal exactly where they are. Showing the American flag billowing in the wind, before panning up to reveal an American military base in the desert is an example.

I imagine this is the latter half of a simple establishing shot, which starts on a security gate bearing the sign 'Area 51' (or whatever the base there is called) or something like that and then pans up, over the flag, and shows the trucks driving off into the distance.

Why did they start with the flag in the US trailer? because otherwise the scene would go on too long, and it makes the Memorial Day links - I don't think there's anything more jingoistic or sinister than that.

Agreed. I'm a "conspiracy theorist" and I never read anything else into it. :)

Yeah, I agree with that. I was just arguing why it was taken out of the international trailer (even though I understand why) not claiming the filmmakers were anti-American or something. It was the principle of the thing for me. His name is "Indiana", you can't deny he's American!

Perhaps because they were aiming for a worldwide release, not just US-wide?

Ahhhh!
That makes sense!

Much more than Spielberg's, Lucas', and Ford's undying love for their fans!LOL

I'm curious if anyone has seen it yet in theaters with either Jumper or The Spiderwick Chronicles?

Actually the flag wasn't taken out of the international version, it was ADDED in the US version.

There are 5 possible explanations, let's examine them:

1) Setting up the fact that the scene is in the US.
Highly improbable, it would have been done in a less visible way and it wouldn't have been specific to the US version of the trailer.

2) Appeal to patriotism.
While it's true that patriotism is somehow more popular in the US than in the rest of the western world, Spielberg & co are not known for beeing ultra-right-winger nationalists. As a matter of fact the movie features a blatant attack on McCarthism. So I consider this explanation rather improbable as well.

3) Reference to Memorial Day
Marketing technique to make sure viewers in the US understand "Memorial Day = Indy 4".

4) Response to MPAA censorship
= "look what we have to do to get this trailer approved by those nuts"

5) Identifying the version of the teaser
By adding such a visible change, it is less likely than technicians will mix up versions and put the wrong (censored) one, as a DVD bonus for example.

3, 4 and 5 seem the most logicial explanations.

I actually saw it attached to Definitely, Maybe, which was odd, since I was not expecting to see it. It was cool though to see it on the big screen. It was on Valentine's Day too.

I once worked as a projectionist and I grimaced whenever an anticipated action/adventure/sci-fi movie trailer was on the list to be attached to a movie far removed from the genre(s).

The one thing I always made sure of was that the "best" trailer was the last one to play before the final snipe before the feature began. I'd put all the dopey romantic comedies and comedies first, and then let the big action trailer have the final punch. This was especially effective when the feature was also an action movie; I felt it would get the audience ready as opposed to running a "chick flick" trailer as the last one before the feature.

It was the last trailer played, so perhaps someone else follows that logic as well.

Although it got me hyped up and then I sat through a fairly slow moving romantic film, but whatever.
