Just listened to the scene. Ugh. Now I don't know what to think. Anyone have the script that the printed and sold afterwards, the one that conforms to the actual film?
Man! I could have parlayed this into something from the Museum Store!Attila the Professor said:...But I'd stake money on it being "Short Round more."

Sorry Henry, I couldn't disagree more vehemently!Henry W Jones said:I just played like 10 times and I pretty sure it's "You listen to Short Round more, you live longer".
Stoo said:...the Suwamu reference. I have always imagined this to be a reference to one of the gods/spirits that Shorty constantly *talks to* in the "Doom" novel. If you want the background on Short Round's character, the best place to start is the novel...

There is no doubt whatsoever Shorty says "So Wah Mu," NONE!
What ever it means, where ever it comes from is in question, but those are the words spoken.
As mentioned, the subtitles on the original DVD release say Suwamu.
...
A reasonable deduction...
...even if the novel reads different!
"Bad news. You listen to Short Round, you live longer."

Since the novels are expanded from a draft of the script, this would appear to be the line that Shorty was meant to be speaking.
Henry W Jones said:No need for apologies. I still think the subtitles are wrong. My subtitles said the same as your screen shot but I hear, "Short Round More". What does it mean then?

I'll post the volume of book ≠ script ≠ film arguments later, (sigh)...but the bottom line is: Short Round says so wah mu.Montana Smith said:Since the novels are expanded from a draft of the script, this would appear to be the line that Shorty was meant to be speaking.
What else is there?Henry W Jones said:I still agree with the rest
One of the reasons why Indy is so cool...who knows? The Drifter said:What the Hell does it even mean?

I think it makes all the sense it needs to, and maybe it's better this way.Henry W Jones said:That it does not make sense and it's confusing to the audience...
Rocket Surgeon said:Maybe you remember the story Spielberg told about feeding lines in English and gestures to the Mayapore shaman, (Marhan?)?
He had to do the same for Shorty, and a simple explanation was that he flubbed the lines but it was the best take and they used it anyway. I can't think of any reason he said Lanka other than it was a mistake and he was thinking Sri Lanka and not Mayapore, (whichwas a name they created after filming anyway, I think )...
Montana Smith said:That makes the most sense. It supports the suggestion that the line he was meant to be saying was: "You listen to Short Round, you live longer."
Rocket Surgeon said:Which, in turn, makes perfect sense in light of no forthcoming information on any So Wah Mu/Suwamu in asian culture.
