Lara Croft: Relic Run

Lara Croft's been around for a while now -- nearly twenty years! -- across several different mediums with varying success. The new comix series has been well received and a new movie may be coming soon, but the immediate focus is on the games; where it all began. And while Ms. Croft undergoes a significant retooling in the mainline Tomb Raider video games, series publisher Square-Enix is keeping the 'classic' character alive in a spin-off series of downloadable games.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris are isometric action games featuring co-op gameplay and some puzzle solving. They're the kind of game you can pick up when you're in the mood for some classic arcade fun. To that list we can now add Lara Croft: Relic Run!

Like Temple Run and Spider-Man Unlimited before it Relic Run is an "endless" runner. But unlike Temple Run, Croft can perform parkour, wield multiple firearms in combat scenarios, and pilot various vehicles while searching for hidden relics around the globe! She can even fight the monsters that pursue her!

Unfortunately - and this is a problem with all mobile games - it's very much a "pay-to-win" situation;otherwise, it's a grind. A slog even. You'll be spending a lot of time in Cambodia before you'll be able to advance to the "Desert" unless you're willing to fork over some real money to unlock it earlier. Which is a shame since there are currently only two levels available; a third "Mountain" level is coming soon, but a larger set of play areas would have been nice.

Anyway. Check it out! I have yet to break 400,000 points or get past six-thousand meters. I'm sure you'll do much better.
