The Complete Making of book says Indy "went on many spy missions, liberating art and precious artifacts from the Nazis."

Which must have been quite a ride for a famous archaeologist.

I imagine his WWII experiences to be like this, except for the military uniform:

And judging from the Indy movies, I think his WWII espionage and artifact recovery adventures made him intermingle with a lot of frauleins.

I also seem to recall a mention of the Enigma machine during Crystal Skull, but I might be getting that mixed up with something else.
