Usually sequels (or prequels) are not as good as the original. Indy is no exception (so far...)
But what are the exceptions?

Here's my list:

Spidey 2
T 2
Aliens
Empire

X 2
among others....

I actually think that the two Matrix sequels are superior to the first film, and T2 is one of THE finest films ever made...ever. LOTR: Return of the King absolutely deserved every single Oscar it received; Empire Strikes Back was a big bump up as far as quality (only to instantly nosedive again with Jedi...); Spider-Man 2 is still the best superhero movie of all time.

A few more favs of mine are The Lost World: JP, Terminator 3 (funny how when this flick came out, the critics adored it for the most part, and yet now the movie has gained a crappy and undeserved reputation...that says alot about moviegoers nowadays...   ), Batman Returns (dig DeVito's whack-a-mole Penguin! Classic!), X2, and FF: Rise of the Silver Surfer (man, that movie is as close to a good-ol' fashioned Stan Lee-Jack Kirby story that we will ever get! I LOVED IT!)

Toy Story 2, Shrek 2, and Spider-Man 2 I enjoyed more than the originals.

The Godfather Part II has to be mentioned, although I think I enjoyed The Godfather more. It goes back and forth between the two.

Some other "not that bad" sequels are Batman Returns and Austin Powers the Spy Who Shagged Me. I'm sure there are others, they just aren't coming to me right now.

but... not as good as T1 :D

Correct. I still favor T3 though. Best action of the whole series!!! (y)

BTW, they are NOT calling T4 Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins anymore. They will think of something else. Thanks, chumps, for your criticism! I actually loved that title!

Just thought of some more:

"The Golden Voyage of Sinbad"!!!!!!!!!!
"Mysterious Island" (sequel to "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea")
"The People That Time Forgot" (sequel to "The Land That Time Forgot")
"Zulu Dawn" (prequel to "Zulu")

In other words, they all got more impressive action secquences than their predecessors.

On another note, there's another list that marks a couple of "reboots" as sequels. Are they, in general sense if they ditch the continuity from the previous films?

For the most part, I loathe Hollywoods franchise filmmaking and of course the dreaded sequel is a large part of that. There have been some great sequels in film though.

While not as consistently mindblowing as Jean de Florette it does have the most emotionally devastating sequence of the whole saga.

A fine continuation in the adventures of Antoine Doinel - arguably superior to The 400 Blows.

The French Connection II is eternally underrated, but it's a terrific, grubby 70's cop movie. Classic closing shot, too.

Curious thing about The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly - it's part of a loose trilogy, but not really a sequel.
That's true! It's technically #3 in the man with no name series. It was my mis...understanding!

I've noticed too on some of the lists here, movies that are remakes and third installments of a series? If you google great movie sequels, you'll find websites list remakes and third installments too, curious? I always thought a sequel was technically only the second installment.

Well, I don't mean in terms of the numbering, though that can be an interesting question too.

What I'm musing on is whether by virtue of the same cast, crew, director, and general atmosphere, but different characters and plot line, we can really say that The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, qualifies as a sequel to A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More.
