Music "phases"

I have been obsessed with Pink Floyd for years. Best not even to start up a conversation about them with me... I could go on for hours. ;) Every album, hundreds of bootlegs, biographies, etc... my Pink Floyd obsession runs deep.

That's choice, man. Your taste in music is most pleasing...

Just curious, what did you think of Waters' return to the band at their Live 8 gig (and their performance in general)? Personally, I thought it was riveting and would love to see more of it. Gilmour has been and always will be the heart of Floyd, as far as I'm concerned. And his solo from "Comfortably Numb" is still unmatched by other guitarists.

Without Rick Wright it's over.
But imagine crossing Momentary Lapse with Radio Kaos or Pros and Cons...hmmm

Shame.

Yes, I would agree, Wright is instrumentally necessary for Floyd's composition.

The thing that is beautiful about Pink Floyd's recording record is that each of their albums fits another piece of their puzzle. But they can stop at any time, because there's never a piece missing--they're able to consistently add more pieces while never distorting the image. Layers, if you will. Perhaps layers make a better analogy for what I'm saying, actually.

I still am obsessed with The Killers. Atm, Lady Gaga coz I just love the arty side of her and the soundtrack to Kill Bill has been stuck in my head for a little while now (and I don't even own an album of it or anything).

Well, personally speaking Great Gig is my favorite, so no doubt I'm partisan.

The magic of compression! Otherwise, and I think it's a Waters affectation...I remember reading interviews in Audiophile that they would only record in Pink noise spectrum.

I don't think Waters-less floyd prescribes to this convention anymore though.

Ditto!! They're amazing. Good luck on the band efforts!

I fell in love with The Avett Brothers (=their music) after watching this.

And ...Lambchop.

...and Joe Hisaishi (because I recently revisited the great Princess Mononoke and there's just too much work to do. Grizzly Bear doesn't really go well as background music while you try to finish a goddamn paper.)

I don't know if there's any music I'm obsessed with right now, though I've been exploring old school blues like Son House and Robert Johnson.

I love listening to albums. I'm not a single person. I have to hear albums, I love the whole idea of a stack of songs sticking together with some coherency.

Bravo! I'm this way too and it really bothers me that the concept of the album seems to be dying. Listening to only singles is like only reading one chapter from a book: it may be good but you're missing out on the story and context that's provided by the songs surrounding it.

U2 is my favorite band and definitely my biggest musical influence. I'm also a big fan of The Flaming Lips, Beck, Radiohead, The Police, Switchfoot, Keane, The White Stripes, The Killers, Neutral Milk Hotel, Bloc Party, Elvis Costello, Nada Surf, Weezer, Bjork, R.E.M., Counting Crows, Foo Fighters, Plankeye, Arcade Fire, Sonic Youth, Interpol, Death Cab For Cutie, The Smiths, They Might Be Giants, and Editors just to name a few. If it's pleasing to my ears I'll listen to it.:)
