Filming Locations

Great, thanks for the tip on the exterior of the college. I didn't realize until I watched the movie again that there was only ONE shot of the outside of the school in Raiders! That nails it! Another one down.

hovitos, can you confirm the actual location of the meadow & rope swing? I found where the tour company is, but according to the Making of book the meadow was on Aliomanu Rd. somewhere & the plane was shot on a rice ranch on the Huleia Stream, which is the one that feeds Kipu Falls. But its difficult to find the exact locations using Google & Bing without more detail...

In the Raiders transcripts, Lucas says "there is actually a Rick's Place in Nepal. Bill and Gloria know about it. They stayed there. It's some expatriot American who lives there at the foot of the Himalayas. It's got this hotel/bar."

Aerial photographs in 2007 revealed the upturned duck and filming platform below Kulaniapia Falls, but I've read that weather moved the shoot to Puna on the Big Island.

I just discovered this incredibly helpful website for finding the Temple of Doom locations, which unfortunately is in French (and Google translate does a poor job). Nonetheless, it is still interesting to read the author's hunting experience and discover how it has changed over the years. The village location is hardly recognizable!

I've found it is nearly impossible to find any information about the filming areas, and as this author makes evident, it seems what is available is a little misleading. Can somebody who perhaps understands French a little better try to interpret his directions to pinpoint it on a map? The aerial views in Google & Bing are extremely low quality and virtually useless.

He also does the same for the Kairouan locations from Raiders.

Sorry MDew, I can't confirm the meadow location. It's wasn't far from where the rope swing was though. If you do a search for Kipu Falls, someone has marked the rope swing on google maps. I suggest perhaps calling the Movie Tours people for confirmation?

There's the 'Raiders' meadow on Kauai (Hawaii) - it's on private property not far from waterfall in the opening scene. I think there's a 4x4 movie tour company that still takes you there. Following photo was from my visit there in 2003...

Hey, Hovitos, cool photo. You lucky son-of-a-gun! (I vaguely recall when you first posted this years ago.)

I can do that for you but give me some time as there's quite a lot on that page.

Indy film locations website

I created new film location pages for each film on my Young Indy site. Should be easier to read/navigate now (and easier for me to edit). Complete with Google Maps that are as detailed as I could make them. I'm hoping to make the "definitive" guide to Indy locations - so if you have more details to fill in I could use the help!
:whip: CHECK IT OUT!(y)

MDew, holy smokes, man. Amazing work! I just spent a good 15 minutes on that site. Great stuff.

It makes me want to visit these places sooo bad. (like anyone else here, I'd hope.)

I'd say my most wanted place to visit would be that Great Hall of Ricksmanworth Masonic School in England. To stand in that room, ohhh dear. I would purposely have on dress shoes, tell everyone to be quiet, and just listen to them hit the wood as I walk. And if it had the chalkboard...my gosh.

edit: I will have a Mountain Dew in honor of your hard work!

Be careful if/when you go to Tunisia! Looks like they have revolution on their hands...

You go to the bottom right hand corner of Turkey and head towards Syria. When you cross the Syrian border you'll still be in Hatay. Or Jordan...

I don't really know. Just follow the red line!

Hello everyone!
This is my first post here. I decided to share my observations on Indiana Jones filming locations. This topic is one of my favorites. I hope that my additions to this topic you will have interesting. ;) So, I will begin with ROTLA. The locations are approximate, but very close to the real (I think  ).
The "Paramount" mountain view was filmed from Hokualele Road to Anahola Mountain on Kauai, Hawaii (22° 9'4.79"N, 159°19'2.99"W); Hovitos Chase was filmed on Kipu Ranch, Kauai, Hawaii (around this area 21°56'26.39"N, 159°23'36.42"W); Jock's Plane take off - Menehune Fishpond, near Lahue, Kauai, Hawaii; Indy's house exterior location is the biggest enigma for me (if anybody knows the exact location, please let me know!); The Raven bar exterior is 100 % matte painting (unfortunately does not exist in reality); Part of the truck chase I think was shot around this area - about 7 km NE of Metlaoui, Tunisia on the C122 road (34°21'55.57"N, 8°25'44.36"E)

metlaouitunisia.jpg

By my opinion this is the same location, but I am not sure.

I got all my Indy locations on Google Earth file (and a lot of pics) :hat: .
One link about Tunisian locations http://homepage.ntlworld.com/colin.kenworthy1/compare.htm
That's all for now. Soon I will post and other Indy filming locations. I hope you like it!

The location of Indy's house from ROTLA was finally revealed (thanx to VP) (y) . The exact address is:

38 Alder Ave, San Anselmo, CA 94960 USA (near Drake High School, San Anselmo, Marin County)

Does anybody know the real location (in Macau) of the building that was used to exterior shots for Club Obi Wan in ToD  ? The only information that I got about this location is:

"Robert Watts and Elliot Scott were given the task of scouting out locations for the second Indy movie. According to Scott, this part of the production was not an easy endeavor. First, a background had to be found which resembled Shanghai of the thirties -- a difficult task when one considers the modern skyline of Shanghai. The shooting took place in the inland port of Macau -- at the estuary of the Pearl River on the side facing away from Hong Kong. Near the local floating casino "Floating Macau Palace" the shots were taken on Rua de Felicidade."

Rua de Felicidade was used for the Shanghai street chase, right? The interior shots of the opening scene was shot at Royal Horticultural Hall in London, England.

In a previous article about the Sierra Cabrera, mention had been made of filming and Indiana Jones; in this article I have hunted down a few locations close to Cortijo Cabrera that are worthy of a visit. The action here begins when the German bi-plane is released from the airship, you then see it crest a ridge covered with small pine trees; this is the pine forest just a short distance to the west of Cortijo Cabrera. The actual bi-plane used in the film I understand was a Belgium Stampe SV.4, built by Stamp et Vertongen (later Stampe et Renard) and designed by George Ivanov. A total number of around 940 aircraft were built, it's main role being that of a two-seater trainer.

The two fighter aircraft were Pilatus P-2’s, manufactured by the Swiss company Pilatus Aircraft; the role of the P-2 was again as a two-seater trainer. A total number of around 55 aircraft were built. The aircraft was powered by an Argus As 410 inverted V12 air-cooled engine producing around 460 H.P. The engine was produced by Argus Motoren and was also installed in the Focke-Wulf Fw 189.

Main Photo. The P-2 flying through a gap in the mountainside immediately after flying over Indiana and his father sheltering behind the wall.

Photo 2. This is the gap today from the same camera position.

Photo 3. Indiana and his father running for shelter from the P-2 fighters gunfire just in front of the goat shed that the bi-plane has crashed into.

Photo 4. The building as it is today from almost the same camera position; the camera needed to be a little higher so the original camera position must have been on staging. It is still used as a goat shed today!

Photo 5. Indiana and his father sheltering behind the wall immediately after the scene in photo 3.

Photo 6. The wall as it is today from the same camera position.

It is easy to see why Steven Spielberg decided to shoot many of the scenes here and in the surrounding area; the 300 plus days of sunshine annually along with the stunning scenery I'm sure playing a large part. The scene with the car, a Citroen 11 Legere Cabriolet (mock-up) was filmed at the old airport at Cortijo Grande a five minute drive away. The scenes with the German tank were filmed in the desert close to Tabernas a short drive away from Cortijo Cabrera. Other scenes when the car drives into a bomb crater along with the scene on the beach with the birds were both filmed in the Cabo de Gata natural park close to San Jose. Other scenes were shot in Almeria and the scenes with the motorcycle and sidecar were, I understand shot near Granada in the Sierra de Huetor. The tunnel entrance where the P-2 loses its wings is at the old gold mine behind the small village of Rodalquilar, again in the Cabo de Gata natural park.

MDew, the "Doom" link was broken a long time ago but I've managed to find the page again. I know it's been over a year since you posted it and that you've mentioned that your "Temple of Doom" locations were complete but would you still like this stuff to be translated? I'm in the mood to do so and the info & advice for anyone who wants to find the locations is very helpful!:)
