Uncharted: The Games

So, it's out. Did you get a copy already? For those of who don't yet have a code, and would like one, I have three extras sitting around collecting dust. Just me know.

In the meantime, the Subway Taste For Adventure Uncharted 3 Beta is up and running. It didn't take long either for the convivial atmosphere to be ruined either -- some maroon let loose with a litany of enn eye double-grr errs. Yeah, that. It completely ruined the evening. "Here we go again..."

Well, then.

Other than that, there are some positive aspects in this most current iteration.

Each weapon sounds distinct from each other; even weapons that are very similar, i.e. the AK-47 & KAL-7. Not only are they unique, but the sound is rich and loud.

The handful of maps currently available are quite large and wonderfully detailed. The standouts among them thus far: London Underground & Sand Village. A subway comes barreling through the London map at random intervals, and a sandstorm comes roaring in obscuring sight.

That sandstorm is quite possibly the best feature I've come across so far. You'll be playing when suddenly the wind picks up and starts to roar; a few seconds later sand covers the area before eventually completely reducing visibility to, maybe, a foot. It's a great feature once you see it in action. I just wish they would let it linger, at least partially reducing visibility throughout the remainder of the match.

Despite these visual upgrades there is something really off with the character models at this time. For me, the most obvious downgrade(?) is with Chloe Frazer. She barely resembles her Among Thieves self. Others have noticed, and started to post compare/contrast snaps on the official forums. Here's a couple for you. Feel free to form your own opinion.

Drake's Deception

Among Thieves

You can clearly see the differences in Chloe's...well, her lack of posterior. But if you look closer, the muscle definition in her legs is clearly missing. It's not even close to what it was. Part of me thinks that they didn't even have Claudia Black do the motion capture work. (We haven't seen any video since the announcement of Ms. Frazer's inclusion.)

From own experience, it looks like the game's villain, Katherine Marlowe, and Ms. Frazer share the exact same poses and stances. They might even share the same underlying skeletal structure.

Here's Elena.

I'm more than happy to wait to have a physical copy in my hand and hope for the best, but I don't think this is something that can be adjusted so close to the release date.

Thoughts? I haven't been able to confirm this independently or officially, but part of me thinks that this might be related to traditional Middle Eastern art styles. I haven't been able to pinpoint the exact thing, but something about the official promo art strikes me as being very similar.

I did. I went to Subway today and got my feet wet in the MP this evening.

It's impressive but definitely kind of hectic at first. I'm used to playing Elimination and since that's either not in UC3 or it's just not in the beta I had to play deathmatch, which is fun but kind of tough to be thrown right in, especially when you don't know the maps. It was fun tho. I haven't even seen all the maps yet but they seem like they're really well-designed. The Sand Village and Syria were pretty impressive.

As far as the graphical changes go, I didn't really notice too much but I haven't really looked that hard yet either.

One of the major drawbacks of these games is the garbage you have to listen to from some of these people. I tend to wear out the mute button.

I played the game a bit more today and I thought I'd list some inital impressions.

Positive

- The gameplay feels very crisp this time around. I've yet to notice any major lag or disruptions.
- The maps are beautiful. The Sand Village, Syria and Yemen are all stunning and very detailed. I can't wait to play the levels they're derived from in the story. And as Le Saboteur mentioned, the sand storm in the middle of the match is a very cool feature.
- There's much more customization this time around.
- New game modes - the buddy system and other features like 3-team deathmatch add a little bit of variety.
- The small samples of the new soundtrack have me really excited. The subtle middle-eastern themes woven into the traditional Uncharted tapestry are really beautiful, they remind alot of Indy.

Negative

- You often get dropped into the middle of ongoing matches, which can be really annoying and hard to adjust to.
- In the beta you're unable to customize matches. I'm 99% sure that's going to change in the finished product tho.
- The beginning of the London Underground and Airstrip map are a bit hectic as you're constantly moving around and it's easy to fall off and die.
- No elimination mode (at least not yet).
- I'm not sure what it is but the menus seem a bit unpolished compared to UC2. Again tho, some of it may be cleaned up in the final product.

Overall, I'm very pleased. As you can tell none of the negatives are major issues and may even turn into positives with more time. I have to say, the more I get into it the curiouser I become about the story. I'm really excited to see how it all plays out across these beautiful settings.

I guess I'm going to have to check out the Fourth Labyrinth to hold me over until November. :whip:

Look for Nathan Drake (This guy NEEDS to play Nathan in the movie!) in this ad from Sony along with TONS of other video-game characters.

It is my hope that Subway will run a promotional campaign for the PlayStation Vita Uncharted: Golden Abyss. I'm finding myself really taking solace in Uncharted now that there is hardly no real Indiana Jones love going in Hollywood right now.

I'm going to do all I can to enjoy this current Subway Uncharted promo run.

I played the game a bit more today and I thought I'd list some initial impressions.

I maxed out the demo a couple of days back, not that it was particularly hard. For these first thirty-odd levels at least, chances are that anybody who has reached the Level 35 cap only has a few more hours logged than you might. I had a Level 1 in a match earlier today, and he made it to Level Five before the match ended! The point is, don't be particularly intimidated.

I play Plunder almost exclusively. It was maddeningly frustrating in Among Thieves for the month I played online, and doubly so now. Why? Too many people view Plunder as a guaranteed 20-minute Team Deathmatch -- that is, so long as they can keep the flow to their liking. A routine outcome for me is like this: I'm going for the treasure, grab it, and immediately get mobbed by three-to-four automatic weapon wielding hooligans. Where are my "teammates"? Oh, they're on the other side of the map either a.) searching for power weapons or b.) busy protecting their precious Kill/Death ratio.

If you're unsure of your teammates' intentions, die near the chest with the idol in hand. See what they do. If they attempt to complete the score, they're probably there to play Plunder. If not, and they run off, they're there to play Team Deathmatch. Goodluck, kids! You're going to need it.

Positive

No connectivity issues thus far. I've only been dropped from one match.
Idol spawns are more randomized. No more running from spot to spot waiting for the idol to respawn.
The Cursed Idol Kickback
All the level specific atmospheric effects are stunning, and are more than a cosmetic flourish; i.e., the missile firing helicopters cause the entire Syria map and your screen to shake making targeting & movement difficult. The sandstorm seems to muffle all vocals.

Negative

Generic custom characters. In the midst of a heavy gun battle, it's not always easy to remember which generic explorer/pirate is on your side.
Gamers from The Kingdom (of Saudi Arabia) and their crappy internet connections.
Being forced to play a certain way. Where the July Beta seemed balanced between those who like to lurk and those who like to be in thick of things, this release heavily favors the former.
No Hardcore Plunder.

There is some otherwise good news floating about though. From the Playstation Blog:

Eric Monacelli said:
To kick off the second week of the promotion, we?ll be adding two brand new maps to the multiplayer experience on Monday, 10/10. So you?ll have a total of 8 competitive maps to explore! There also will be more videos with tips and info that will help maximize your Uncharted 3 multiplayer experience. Consider them your field guide and survival guide during the Subway Taste for Adventure and into the full retail release of Uncharted 3.

Full post can be read here. From the background I saw today, I think one of those is going to be The Museum from Among Thieves.

Naughty Dog is also going to discount the K/D ratio in objective games on the full retail release.

Arne Meyer said:
A graph or spread should give you all the info you would want. If you really want your ratio, take the time to break out the calculator. There is too much focus on padding this stat to the deteriment of the rest of the community and our experience with U2 has been that some players will abuse anything to bump up their KDR. I would have figured that killfarming would be universally abhorred.

You can view the full thread and its related commentary here.

The contents of this post are spoiler-like. So if you don't want to know anything more about Drake's Deception, please avoid the following couple of paragraphs.

First up is a gameplay trailer that's been making the rounds for a couple of days, but I just came across. While the cruise ship was technologically impressive, it didn't quite strike me as the best example of the enhanced gameplay. This one does. It also displays just how phenomenal the single-player campaign's graphics are going to be. Note all the little details.

Don't click play if you don't want to know anything.

I can't tell when this takes place in the story, but it's probably the middle third. It also looks like this is the section the multiplayer map "Desert Village" is based on. Check out how dirty Nate gets after tumbling down the dune. Lots of little details like this abound.

The Uncharted 3 Subway Multi-player Demo introduced us to a new character, Rameses. I haven't been able to place him within the larger arc of the story -- I haven't tried -- but he's on the villain's side in the demo. The interesting bit for me is this: He references Ishtar. No, not that reputedly horrible film starring Warren Beatty & Dustin Hoffman. No, the ancient Babylonian goddess of love, fertility, war & sex. If you've had the chance to read the Epic of Gilgamesh, you might be familiar with the passage where Gilgamesh chastises the goddess for "(loving) the lion, mighty in strength, and thou hast dug for him seven and seven pits! Thou hast loved the steed, proud in battle, and destined him for the halter, the goad and the whip."

Ishtar seems to be a fickle mistress just like her Greek counterpart, Aphrodite. If I'm correct, and Rameses isn't instead saying inshallah, I wonder if Babylon won't be worked into the story somehow.

Okay. I think that's enough.

While I appreciate the warning, can we set a couple of ground rules regarding posting advance reviews & pictures?

1.) Feel free to post a link to a review, but refrain from saying anything about the contents in that link. For example, no scores, no quotes, & definitely nothing about the story.

2.) Refrain from posting any pictures that could contain spoilers until after the game's official release. Stick with promotional artwork if you must. Nobody likes having their game/story spoiled.

Nobody is obliged to adhere to these rules, but I hope that the three of us that read this thread still can come to terms. Either way this might be last post in this thread for the next couple of weeks. I'm going to be observing complete radio silence when it comes to Uncharted news.

If that business is concluded, let's move onto something more interesting...

A few posts back I mentioned that our friends in the former Commonwealth Countries had the chance to win a trip to Jordan as part of Sony Europe's Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception advertising campaign. While Los Americanos like myself were getting our feet wet in the Subway Multiplayer Experience, 20 lucky fans got to join Naughty Dog team members, members of the press, and Nolan North & Emily Rose in the Wadi Rum region of Jordan!

The contestants competed in a series of events designed to test their mettle, memory, and dexterity! One would even be eerily familiar to the beloved Dr. Jones!

I can understand these two points, but I did give a spoiler warning before the pictures and gave ample space between the top of my post to the pictures below it.
But, I agree. From now on I will just post the links to said spoilers. And, I'm glad that you enjoyed the trailer. I know that I did.

SPOILERS IN THE LINK:

http://gamingeverything.com/10506/first-uncharted-3-review-is-in/

This is the link of the site hosting the images that drifter posted. But I post it because it states that the magazine that the images are scanned from, Play-Mania (a Spanish videogame magazine), gave Uncharted 2 a review of 9.5 a few years ago.

It gave Uncharted 3 a review of 9.9, the highest ever for that publication. (y)

Please see two posts above, Ska. I'm trying to keep this thread as spoiler free -- as opposed to speculation -- until after the game is released.

I don't see the problem with posting links that have spoilers in them. No one is forcing you or anyone else to click them.
Ska even warned that it was a spoiler, so I don't see the problem with that.
As long as one doesn't post the spoiler itself in this thread; where's the harm?

I had asked that we refrain from posting pictures, quotes, and scores here on this forum. Post all the links you want.

As previously mentioned, some of us don't want to know anymore than we already do. It doesn't seem to be a shared sentiment, however, and since that's the case, I'm done.

For the next couple of weeks I'm observing radio silence. The three other participants in this thread will have to seek out your own Uncharted related news & information.

I don't see how a mere score could ruin a game for anyone. He made no mistake.
That's news to some people. It's not telling anything about the plot, characters, or anything else.
I'm sorry that you are not going to continue to post in this thread, But, I hope to see you after all is said and done.
And, we'll find and post Uncharted news just fine.
