German Mechanic

Another one of the vintage figures, brought up to modern standards, this is one of those figures (like Toht) whose absence made the line feel incomplete.

IMG_41461.JPG

Hasbro did a great job capturing Pat Roach's hulking frame, adding just the tiny bit of flabbyness that he had in the film (not that I am one to talk). This figure is an awesome compromise of asthetics and articulation, giving him just enough to be posed battling Indy while looking great at the same time. He even has some very nicely concealed ankle articulation that I didn't even notice at first. His outfit, consisting really only of pants and boots, is spot on to the movie and the cap is a nice touch (and fits him very well). My only quibble here is that his only open hand, his right one, is a rather tight fit for his accessories, which is why I have him holding the wrench like I do. I didn't even try to force the pistol in there, as it seemed as if it would be a fruitless attempt.

IMG_41981.JPG

The headsculpt is pretty nice. I wouldn't say it is 100% Pat Roach, but it captures the essence of the character nicely. One thing I noticed is the oddly askew mustache. I guess maybe he is meant to be sneering, but his straight mouth doesn't reflect this. I couldn't find a screen shot that showed his mustache at this kind of odd angle, I guess Hasbro just took a little poetic license. It doesn't really detract from his awesomeness, just a weird little thing I noticed.

IMG_41991.JPG

Considering he didn't even have some of these items in the film, the German Mechanic makes out pretty well in the accessory department. He has the removable cap which, as I said, fits like a charm. He also comes with the obligatory wrench which, correct me if I am wrong, he never actually wielded on film (it was the other mechanic) but, well, he is a mechanic and the vintage figure had one...so what the heck. He also comes with a nicely sculpted Walther P-38, which he also never used in the film and he can't seem to actually hold. Don't get me wrong though, after countless Lugers, I am ecastatic at finally getting a P-38! Toht sports one of these, as do a few of his thugs, and the pilot of the Flying Wing. Indy also uses one to shoot the line up of Nazis on the tank in TLC, yet we have never gotten one in the line. They easily could have just given us another Luger and no one would have cared, so it's inclusion is very welcome. Since he can't really hold it though, I am giving mine to Toht. You can also see in this shot the nicely concealed ankle articulation the Mechanic has.

IMG_42002.JPG

I realize I didn't take as many pics of this guy as I did other figures, a fact that will be remedied in my "round up" review later on. Over all, this guy is great! He looks great while having just the right amount of articulation at the same time. They could have maybe added wrist joints, but I prefer the way he is I think. I can't think of anything else he could have come with, the only other thing he had on flim was a shirt, which he swiftly removed. Not sure how they could have pulled that off, so best to leave it alone. One thing I did notice, and this is really minor stuff, is that when his waist is twisted to any position other than "straight ahead", his upper torso noticeably hangs over his waist. Not a huge deal, like I said, and I am not really sure how they could have avoided this. I also realized, too late to post, that I didn't take any comparison shots of him and the Giant Thuggee, which I will also remedy in my "round up" review.

Next up....Toht

And I just realized that I didn't upload the pics of Toht yet, so he will have to wait until this evening...my apologies.

Toht

Last, but certainly not least, we have Toht. If there was one of the "Lost Wave" whose absence made the Indy line feel incomplete, it would be this guy. One of the very first in the vintage line and probably one of the most popular villians from the Indy films. Hasbro really pulled out all the stops on this one.

IMG_41492.JPG

Some of us had a preview of sorts of Toht if they picked up the SDCC Exclusive Cobra Commander a couple years back, as Hasbro used Toht's body for that figure. He is loaded with articulation but his hip joints are hindered by the bottom of his coat. Not that Toht really needs to pull off too many action oriented poses. Paint apps are nice. His suit has a very subtle pin stripe appearance to it, you really have to look, but it is there. for some reason it is a lot more apparent in my pics than in hand. Little details like the buttons and buckle on his overcoat are nicely done. There is a tiny bit of slop on the glasses on mine, but in hand it is no where near as noticable as in my pics. His suit is also a kind of dark grey, as opposed to the black of the vintage figure.

The headsculpts are both very nicely done and interchange quite easily. Unlike Henry Jones Sr, both sculpts have the glasses sculpted on. While that was a cool feature for Henry Sr, I'm glad they didn't do it here. The un-melty head is a pretty fair representation of Ronald Lacy from the film, right down to the big mole on his left cheek (seen in the left side profile above). The melty head has it too, it's just unerneath the "melt". The melty head is really nicely done, right down to his rolled back eyes and they even painted the individual teeth in his gaping mouth. I really wish I had a second Toht, so I could display him with both heads.

IMG_42182.JPG

IMG_42212.JPG

Toht is the clear winner from this wave when it comes to accessories. He comes with a removable hat (which fits fantastically!), removable overcoat, alternate melty head, alternate hand (with headpiece scar), poker, and the Headpiece to the Staff of Ra. The pistol he is pictured with above actually comes with the German Mechanic. All these accessories are great! The hands swap out as easily as the heads do and the paint apps on the scarred hand is quite nice. The scar is more noticeable than on the vintage figure, thanks again to the subtle paint work (which doesn't appear so subtle in my pic). The poker has that nice glowing, white hot, look to it (would have been cool if they did it like the torches though). The Ra Headpiece is very finely detailed and is even cut out around bird's head in the center...with a tiny jewled eye painted on. So nice to finally get this artifact.

IMG_42153.JPG

Overall, Toht is a fantastic figure, nicely sculpted with great paintwork and a ton of accessories. They could have included another P-38 with him and got some more mileage out of the mold, but the German Mechnic's suits him just fine (see my review of that figure for more). About the only other thing that would have been cool would have been his famous coat hanger but, at this scale, it probably wasn't feasible. Also, I can't stress enough how great the removable hat is! They tried (and mostly failed) to make this work on KOTCS Indy, but they really nailed it with both Toht and the Mechanic. Toht is definitely the gem of this wave, and that is saying a lot because all of these are really great figures!

Stay tuned for my "round up review" where I will post a few further thoughts, impressions, and pics of the entire wave...

Awesome job, Billy.

One of the favorite past times of Indy collectors is to bash on Hasbro for the mishandling of the Indiana Jones line. While there are some good points to be made, the conversations can often turn a bit hyperbolic.

But this is one instance where they REALLY dropped the ball. By Hasbro's own admission, Toht was supposed to be in the FIRST wave but they decided to "hold him back" for some insane reason.

Hasbro, when you're trying to launch an all new line and garner as much interest and support as you can, DON'T HOLD BACK ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC, SOUGHT AFTER CHARACTERS!

Instead, we got guys like Monkey Man and T-shirt Mutt.

Alas...

Received my figures today and they are awesome. I love the box they came in as well. Might display it like a poster on my wall. They are a great addition to my collection. Will be setting up some toys tonight and tomorrow. Thanks for the review and the great pics of these Billy Ray. Very accurate. I don't get Toht not coming with a pistol but not a big deal. Got some extra pistols from Elsa and Vogel on accident from someone on Ebay. He will get one of those.

LOL, the pun was not intentional :D

Ok, I have a bunch more pics, and some final thoughts to post today. Planned on having it up last night but a sick 4 yr old and troubles uploading the pics threw a wrench in my plans for the evening.

Lost Indy Wave Roundup Review - Part 1

Ok, after posting my reviews of the individual figures, I realized I missed a few points and didn't get the best of photos in some cases, so this will be a repository of miscellaneous thoughts, photos, and things that folks pointed out to me.

First up, Lance pointed out that I hadn't posted a clear shot of the stand. Definitely an oversight on my part, as these are a nice addition to the figures. As everyone knows by now, the tiny, crated, relics are gone and have been replaced by figure stands. This was Hasbro's original intention when the line was still active, and we would have seen these included with future waves of figures. The stands are nicely sculpted with the Indy logo and have one foot peg. They seem to be just about the right size as well, not taking up a large footprint. I'd love to have more of these, and would definitely buy them if Hasbro were ever to sell them seperately.

IMG_42722.JPG

Another thing I failed to mention in any of my review is something that is becoming somewhat of a disturbing trend with Hasbro. What I am talking about is the production code numbers (or whatever they are) being printed on the legs of the figures in rather conspicuous locations. This something Hasbro has been doing across all their action figure lines as of late. I've heard that these unsightly numbers can be easily removed with Goof-Off or similar products, but I have been hesitant to try it yet. On some of the figures it's more noticeable than others. Marion's almost looks like a bruise. Here are a couple of examples:

Indy's is quite noticeable:

Satipo's not so much:

Lost Indy Wave Roundup Review - Part 2

One thing I wanted to do, but didn't think about till after the fact, was to post some shots of these figures with their vintage counterparts and/or previous modern incarnations. Without further ado, here are those pics...

And I know that this is neither a vintage counterpart or previous modern incarnation, but since they were both portrayed by Pat Roach...

Sadly, my vintage Marion disappeared some time ago, or I would have posted her as well :(

I would not use Goof Off. I use it at my job and it will melt plastic. I tried cleaning a set off screwdrivers with it and the handles got soft and didn't harden back up for a while. Also I would guess these are limited so they are numbered like a lot of limited collectibles. Have to look at my set but it looks like yours are numbered the same on both figures? Didn't notice the numbers last night.

Lost Indy Wave Roundup Review - Part 3

I realize that I kind of short changed the German Mechanic on pics, so here are some additional shots of him.

This first one highlights again just how great his cap fits

IMG_42742.JPG

In my review of this figure, I mentioned the crooked mustache. Upon further review, is sort of sneering and the mustache is aligned with his upper lip jst fine.

IMG_42752.JPG

Here's a shot showing what I was reffering to about his torso articulation.

IMG_42785.JPG

Ok, maybe the Texas heat has softened up the plastic on this guy, or maybe I just didn't try hard enough the first time, but it turns out that the Mechanic can hold his pistol after all, with just a little effort.

IMG_42842.JPG

Finally, I just thought this was a great shot of this figure.

Great posts/thread. Thanks for giving us the close up. I have some of the toys, but at roughly $13 a pop it's a bit steep when you can't pick and choose.

Though I would like to have them all.:hat:

Lost Indy Wave Roundup Review - Part 4

I realized that my pics of Toht were a little out of focus for the most part and also that I didn't post any of him without his hat, so here are a few more pics of him.

Again, the removable hat is really, really well done on both Toht and the German Mechanic. I would have loved to have seen Hasbro take another crack at an Indy with removable hat, as they seem to really have perfected it.

Great pictures, great review!! Awesome job.

Nice to see the pics with their vintage counterparts.

So I guess the modern line now has an updated version of every vintage figure EXCEPT non-ceremonial Belloq. Damn, what a shame!

Yeah, Toht's removable hat is really great. However, I think the reason the removable hats work so well on Toht and the mechanic is because they're bald and therefore the hats can fit much tighter on their heads. Would be a bit harder to pull off with Indy. But Toht's hat is made from a softer plastic, so if they made an Indy hat like that, it might "give" just enough to work.

What I love about these figures is the extra attention to detail, particularly with the sculpting.

Toht's non-burned right hand is sculpted to clutch the headpiece flat to his palm (and get sizzled in the process!) By contrast, his left hand has an extremely tight grip which makes it possible for it to hold the very skinny poker accessory.

The Mechanic's left hand is balled into a fist, but the right hand also has a very tight grip. So he can hold an accessory there (gun, wrench, etc.), but when not holding anything, it still looks like he's making a fist.

They really thought of just about everything here. Though it's three years later, the line is going out (again) on another incredible high note (even after the phenomenal "Temple of Doom" wave.)

Yeah, we use it at work too, to remove old stickers from equipment. It's pretty powerful stuff. I definitely don't want to mess these babies up.

Thanks. I wish I knew what became of mine. All my other vintage figures were together...but no Marion. I bet my brother took her  She is one of the pricier figures nowadays too.

They look great. I'm trying to be optimistic- Hasbro toy shop still shows the set (even though it's out of stock), I have the slim hope more will become available. Also, I hope the ebay scalpers get teabagged by Ernest Borgnine.
