With a new haircut,I could see him playing a boy named IKE.

It's offical (as if I have a say is someone eles's film) I'm now pulling hard for Einstein. I must see how he would fit into an Indy film!

There's a 99% chance John Hurt will NOT play Albert Einstein. The film takes place in 1957. Einstein died in 1955. I don't think they would cast an actor with such caliber as John Hurt and have him do flashback scenes. And I doubt the story will have anything to do with a time traveling Albert Einstein.

Or he could be playing the corpse of Einstein...well, that seems to be an even bigger waste of an actor of Hurt's caliber!

LOL

I don't care if it's an Einstein flashback. I think he'd be perfect for the part.

I agree, he could do an excellent job, I just don't think it's likely.

What is this business of Abner being a part of the anti-commie rally on the college campus? Has John Hurt been spotted anywhere on the New Haven set? What's with the two different outfits Ford's been seen in. The rumor doesn't match any of the pics. I've stayed relatively spoiler free - but thought this was pretty darn confusing. I think it's definitely possible for Hurt to play Abner (and it doesn't take a genius to figure that he's not Einstein) - but for "Abner" to seek Indy out and go wondering around campus is kind of ridiculous. I guess if I really dove into spoiler territory, I'd have a little better idea if this were false or false. But, we've got aliens, skulls, arks, dead Abners, etc. I'm starting to really love these rumors. If I were directing such a huge event movie that was almost twenty years in the making, I'd probably start these rumors to throw some people off a little. If I'm Spielberg, I'm thinking that the best way to avoid spoilers is to create false spoilers and let the fans discuss themselves into mass confusion. I love it! I'll bet he's got a rumor committee. Think of the best rumors out there, then build off it - then release it to CHUD or IMDB.......(Belloq laugh)
I still think Hurt is a villain. Abner? Perhaps. If so, then the Ark is a critical ingredient. He'd be perfect for the role. He'd have to play older - but he looks it. I just keep thinking that they are all too clever to use recycled material. There are so many artifacts - and so many roles for John Hurt to play in the Indy universe. Why Abner and the Ark?
Full circle, I guess. Love the rumor-mill.

It seems to me Abner would be too "easy" a role to cast Hurt in. It could be true though, but it raises many questions. Why did Marion tell Indy her father was dead? Did she really think so? How did Abner "die"? Why would Abner fake his death and disappear? To escape from the Nazis? And why would he decide to come out of hiding in 1957? Where has he been all those years?

I've never liked "Abner coming back from dead" -plot device after being dead for 21 years either. That just sounds like bad writing. Of course, as we don't know the whole story, what sounds just lousy from the tidbits we hear might work fantastically on screen.

But still, I'm a big fan of the theory that all we've been hearing is simply a carefully laid out smokescreen...

Yes it certainly does. Anyways, it can work if done well.

If Abner returns, they just have to figure out what happened in 1934 and after. Abominable snowman attack? Lost in the Sino-Japanese war in 1937? Thrown into a Siberian Gulag?

Nepal is relatively close to the events in Temple of Doom, India 1935... but if they crossed it would be one Dickensian coincidence too many for me.

My guess is that Abner just escaped from a Chinese prison, and is being hunted down by them and the Ruskies.

I guess it's too late to hope for Eastwood as Abner. I was really hoping Abner being dead would have just been what Marion thought to be true, and we'd finally get a glimpse of Indy's mentor. Eastwood would have rocked in the role. Hurt though on the other hand is an excellent villain, but Abner huh? God, I hope he's not Einstein.

that would of been a great part for eastwood ...to bad that would of been something exciting to see;)

John Hurt as?

Just noticed on ign.com uk that there are rumours that John Hurt could be playing Albert Einstein in this movie! Have you guys discussed this? If so, remove this thread!

Yeah, that news was reported months ago. It doesn't really make sense for John to play Einstein, as Einstein died in 1955, two years before "Crystal Skull" takes place.

Just for the record, it doesn't make much sense him playing Abner either.
