Looks like I may have got the last batch of current look pre-distressed hide from Wested. Looking on their Facebook page they say they are thinking of using a new hide, slightly softer, more a cross between novapelle and cow, less shiny but a different colour, lighter and more brown looking. I'm not sure I like it. As pointed out though, the predistressed hide does soften and break in the more you wear it, I'm perfectly happy with my jacket.

It is brown now but lurking underneath is the gray. The novapelle skin when received looked gray with hundreds of darker tiny spots. I think as it is worn and the real leather color surfaces, it will have a unique look to it. Even after the pecards, it is not a uniform color.

It's a shame Wested have moved on from their pre distressed cow. The Major's right, it's a great hide and it ages really well. Must check out the new one.

I now know what they mean when they say movie processing or filtering effected the look of the jacket in the film. Made it look darker, particularly in Raiders. I was wearing my Lambskin Raiders today and took a picture, I had the camera set to a certain filter on the phone, not intentionally, and well you can see the jacket looks very dark, almost black. In person the jacket is chocolate brown colour. As posted a couple of pages back.

Incidentally, while I was there I had my LC Lambskin in the car and decided to zip it up and throw it around hard on the concrete car park floor, which is rough. After doing that a few times I smacked it against one of the concrete pillars a few times. There was barely a scratch on the jacket (Authentic Lambskin), just a tiny scuff on one of the edges. Just goes to show it would take a reasonable beating. Gave up after that.

I wonder where the myth that lambskin is delicate came from. In my experience, and as demonstrated above, it's very resilient.

Yup.

A few quick shots of the Shrunken Lamb Temple of Doom. Pleased with it, and very comfortable to wear. Before I bought any IJ jacket I always thought the ToD jacket was my favourite. I know it's a lot of peoples least favourite. Having owned them all now, I like them all equally. They each offer their own 'coolness'.

Oh, first class. I was hoping you'd post a few pics. Looks ace, great colour.
Two questions... How does the fit feel in relation to Westeds Raiders and LC? On their website it says that the TOD is the most tailored of all their Indy jackets.
And what are your initial thoughts on the shrunken lamb?

Thanks, yes the Shrunken Lamb seems to be a good colour option for ToD. The other thing I noticed is the collar hang is exactly the same as many scenes in the movie (when the jacket is unzipped), where the right side of the collar lays down almost flat and the other side more raised, collar like. I suppose because the jacket was copied from a screen used jacket, and the shrunken lamb is the most accurate look and feel of the leather.

The first question. My Raiders and LC are off the rack jackets. Size 42. This ToD is also chest 42" but of course custom. Yes you're right it does say the ToD, is the most tailored. It looks a little bit more of a snug fit, visually, but it doesn't really feel it. The only place I think I feel it is across the back, you feel a little bit less room there, tiny amount, but it doesn't inhibit any of your movement or comfort at all. The jacket still feels relaxed and I can wear a jumper underneath it as well. In other words I wouldn't let that put you off. Order your usual chest size.

The second question. The Shrunken Lamb, my initial reaction on opening the package was, this looks like some old jacket. Because I'm used to the jackets having a cleaner glossy look to them. I also was unsure of the colour. I think indoor lighting doesn't help, and as soon as I went outdoors it looked much better. Then I looked at HD screencaps from ToD, and it seemed a good closeness to the jacket at the start of the film, when it's just a little dusty looking. Of course in the end scene the jacket is shredded and ripped in places to the point you'd think even Indy would have chucked it away and got a new jacket, which of course he did. Anyway, I like the look and feel of the shrunken lamb. I'm sold on it now I think.

I ordered it with cotton sleeves and buckles. Back length 25.5 sleeves 23.5.
I read on another forum that 25.5 was the backlength of Fords jacket in the film. Can't verify that, but it just happened to be the length I wanted anyway. There is a slight shoulder overhang, which I was aware of and I have quite broad shoulders. So that should be taken into account.

Anyway, thanks Major. I don't have a TOD yet, but feel I should to add to the collection. Next on the list I think.

Just put my Authentic lambskin ToD jacket (not the one above which is shrunken) in the washing machine for 15 minutes. See what happens.

Wested's Indy Jacket blog; Hero vs. Standard Raiders

This is a handy little guide and well worth a look if you're deciding which one to go for.

Still tumble drying it. Which I'm doing in 20 minute bursts and checking. I reckon another hour or two.

After the initial 15 minute washing machine spin, I thought it might be ruined, It looked instantly shrunk by noticeable margin. Then spent ten minutes outside ringing it out a bit, it started to look less shrunk. The jacket was so drowned it weighed about four times it's dry weight. The scrunching would have created a really cool looking texture but it didn't stay long. The stitching and lining have completely held up so far. Not sure what the result will be, if the sleeves have shrunk by an inch I'll be happy as they were too long. Likewise the back length.

I've got my perfect ToD now in the shrunken lamb, so even if I had the sleeves taken up on this one I'd have to wear it a hell of a lot to weather it in, and that wasn't going to happen so I thought I'd experiment and take the risk of ruining the jacket, we'll see what happens.

Oh yes I read that comparison on the wested blog. Interesting. I knew most of the differences but it was still good to read. I think my next jacket will be a custom Raiders, or hero Raiders. Undecided. If it don't go for the hero I'm wondering what sort of custom mods I could request on the standard fit?

OK. I think I can delcare the washing machine treatment a success. I've worn the ToD jacket and I'm more than pleased. The leather is not completely dry. The lining is dry and perfectly fine as is the stitching on the jacket. There's been just the right amount of shrinking (about an inch). Sleeves are good, back length is shorter. The collar hang is awesome now, looks like the movies instead of new jumbo jet wings. I think this might be my favourite jacket again.

The treatment was 15 minute standard spin wash (just water). Wring out the water by hand as much you can. Tumble dry low /medium, 20 minute intervals and inspect the jacket. Then I lost patience and did the last bit on high.

PS. This is Wested Authentic Brown Lambskin (their current version)

Looks great. To be honest I'm a bit surprised by just how well it's turned out. Says a lot about how very good Wested's gear is

Think I'll save that jacket for if I ever Cosplay. It's a very snug fit now, as the ToD was already a very tailored fit. A standard buttoned shirt underneath is pretty much all that will fit. I measured the back length. it's shorter by an inch, as are the sleeves. It looks the part, of course the leather is a bit dryer than it was. I would say, stick to the shower treatment unless you want to really shrink the jacket as I have. However, soaking the collar really made an improvement to the drape of the collar. Another thing to note away. That could be done independently of the rest of the jacket if you wanted to fix the collar drape.

The shrinkage issue could come in handy. I've seen quite a few Indy jackets on eBay that I've not gone for because they're a couple of sizes too big, but if washing machine shrinkage is a possibility...
In other news, I was looking at the Bill Kelso site earlier today, ( still toying with the idea of getting one,) and I see that they're now producing a third option for the Relic Hunter. Along with the 'South America' and the 'Cairo' they now offer the 'Bantu Wind' version, which they describe as based on the prototype jacket used in the Bantu Wind photo shoot at La Rochelle, featuring a lower yoke, and different action pleat and strap design...or words to that effect.

I saw that option the other day, yes. The Bantu Wind jacket. I was mulling over which jacket of the Kelsos I would get, if I ever did, which could happen one day. I was thinking the Cario jacket as I like the look of it at the Iman's house scene. However which jacket is the Wested hero? Which scenes does it appear in? If it was the same as the Cario jacket then I might consider the South America 1936 jacket.

Decided to sell the ToD jacket I tested in the washing machine. Put the money toward a new one. Ordered it with same measurements as the Shrunken Lamb jacket, but with Wested Authentic Lamb. For a custom jacket they had it to me in four days. Turned out really nice, only worn it a few days and the tailored fit of the jacket seems to be creating the desired effect, look at the arm.

Looks great. It's a bit obsessive of me I know, but I love the arm-crinkle effect on a leather jacket, it's where the character and individuality shows most; 2 identical Indy jackets will have completely different creases and be unique to the individual wearers. Great.
And a four day turn-around, that's impressive.
