Video Diary: Shanghai

This looks quite beautiful. Loving what I'm seeing so far. And if what I've heard is correct this Bond film takes quite an interesting turn concerning M.

Many fans are angry that Bond will forgo the traditional vodka martini for Heineken, which paid the studio.

An abandoned action sequence from "GoldenEye" will be used in "Skyfall". It was supposed to take place on a train bridge so the scene being filmed in Turkey must be it.

Trivia: Golden Eye was the name of Ian Fleming's house in Jamaica.

Speaking of changes, Baccarat is Bond's card game of choice. I wonder if those same fans were angry that the game in "Casino Royale" was changed from Baccarat to Texas Hold 'Em poker!(n)

Saw Skyfall today and thoroughly enjoyed it. The plot was much less messy than quantum of solace, in fact it's simplicity is possibly a by product of the last movie.

I thought javier bardem was suitably weird and it was nice to see judi dench play a prominent role.

Without giving anything away it seems as though this film brings things full circle.

50 Years of James Bond Cars!

"Top Gear" is having a special about Bond cars tonight on BBC2. (Announced a few weeks ago but it starts in 1.5 hours.)

50 Years of Bond Cars: A Top Gear Special:
"Richard Hammond celebrates 50 years of James Bond films with a look back at the franchise's vehicles, including the Aston Martin DB5 and the Lotus Esprit. Richard also talks to silver-screen 007s Daniel Craig and Roger Moore, goes behind the scenes on the latest Bond adventure Skyfall, and attempts to turn a Lotus into a fully working submarine car."

For car lovers, Bond fans and/or a mixture of the two...
DON'T MISS IT!:gun:

Top Gear is such a fun show. I get BBC America, so I probably won't be able to see it, but that sounds like a good episode.

O.K. Gonzo, the show just finished and it was FANTASTIC!(y) Richard Hammond is obviously a fan (as he is with Evel Knievel, etc.). Lots of great info/footage on the film cars...PLUS, they achieved a submarine Lotus (but it wasn't an Espirit, it was with an Excel. No matter, they 'apparently' did it)!(y)

BBC Canada airs the series a few months behind so I'm pretty confident that BBC America will eventually show this at some point, Gonzo.:)

Good news, Andy. "Skyfall" doesn't start in the Switz until next week. Glad you liked it, though, because your opinion counts!(y)

Skyfall...

Well, I followed the development phase since they released the previous film back in 2008 and I've been eagerly waiting for it to come out an entire year. Then yesterday I went to see it, and thought it was good.
But that's exactly what I see as a part of the problem, too. This is because I can't help but say that it left me a little disappointed. Just a little. Cause had it not been for a pretty dull and bland, somehow even absurd third act, this one would have been quite the masterpiece.

Don't want to spoil anything to anyone, but this film is absolutely a triumph for the James Bond franchise. And it is because it's modern and classic at the same time. Thanks to Sam Mendes and his wonderful talent as a director, this film came out being a sort of a tribute to the 007 saga in its entirety, while also representing its rebirth.

This being said, I think that if we look at Skyfall as a work of cinematic art per se, it may possibly be considered the best Bond film of all times, and by far. Maybe even one of the best action films of all time. But if I had to judge it on my personal taste, and only consider the actual quality of storytelling, then to me the film climax is not up to the task, and it kind of ruins it all. So, am I the only one who is viewing it this way??

Any thoughts??

My thoughts that I posted earlier were that this movie seems to bring it full circle, by that I mean the Craig era of Bond, because in Casino Royale they ditched everything that was familiar to the Bond movies and seemed to start again, yet this one brings it all back gradually and adds a feeling of nostalgia too.

The only thing I had an issue with in that third act is that surely an organisation as big as MI6 could of tracked him down, without resorting to the measures Bond did? But I guess that wouldnt have fitted with what they wanted to show at the end which was very Home Alone or Witness or whatever way you want to describe it. I don't mean that in a negative way either.

I read before I went to see that this could be the best Bond movie ever. Thats a massive statement to make. Its very good, but my personal favourite is From Russia with Love, a film I've been watching for 30 years now, so its hard for a brand new movie on first viewing to suddenly upstage something thats been part of my life for all that time. Sometimes its easy to get caught up in the Euphoria of something thats brand new, so I think time will tell for Skyfall where it sits within the whole franchise.

So I just got out of Skyfall... and my initial reaction is this:
The film should have been called

"James Bond: The Dark Knight Edition with a little bit of a Home Alone ending".

I haven't had mixed feelings about a movie like this in years... probably since Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I'm feeling like I did then, like I need to see it again to see if I feel a different way upon another viewing.

I just don't know. Guess I'll sleep on it.

And by the way I was right back in April about the death and replacement of M
