The directing and acting is obviously top-notch stuff. Amazing scenes in the boxing ring. But for my taste, it's just never one that's been one of my absolute favorites. Probably because there's a certain mean-spiritidness to it - it has a certain New York/East Coast flare to it.

Don't get me wrong, I still really like it. It's the best film I've seen about male jealousy and insecurity. I just never completely connect with it.

My taste would probably be more in-line with 'Million Dollar Baby,' if we're talking boxing movies.

A fantastic film about brutality and machismo, and the suffering it can bring. I recall an interview by Scorsese where he said that in bringing Jake Lamotta to the big screen, he brought a lot of Anthony Quinn's portrayal as Zampano in Fellini's La Strada into the character of Lamotta. I can definitely see the similaraties between the two characters.
