The Indiana Jones Timeline / Chronology

does the Didj KotCS game include any original content (its description sounds like it does)?

That's an interesting question. I got this for my son but he's too young to get through all the math problems. (there's a LOT). It's kind of odd that there aren't any youtubes or walkthroughs of it anywhere online that I can find. The gameplay is pretty repetitive, but there were some dialogue screens as I recall....

Also, I know the Indy world map by Matt Busch contains some chronology info. Is any of it new or help nail down anything?

Edit: Oh, and another question. Is the manga titled Young Indiana Jones and the Crown of the Roma an adaptation of Gypsy Revenge?

Tomb of the Gods - 1931 section appears only on p1.

A month could prove tricky as even the date appears off. The panels show the artifact being discovered in a diamond mine (operated under Stalin) north of Norilsk. Norlisk WAS founded by the end of the 1920's, but wasn't officially founded until 1939. Also, mining did not begin until 1939.

As for a month, the panels show deep snow covering everything. Norlisk has temperatures below 0 degrees from Oct-Apr, so could be any of them.

Shrine of the Sea Devil - 1931 flashback appears on p59-60 og Indiana Jones Omnibus Vol 2.

Dating appears off again - the flashback happens in Kafiristan in 1931, but Kafiristan did not exist after 1896, when it was renamed Nuristan. No clues on a month that I can see.

Thunder in the Orient - 1939/1940

The biggest problem is with Sophie and Indy already knowing her. Obvious Indy first met her in Fate of Atlantis in 1939, so this story must take place later.

On the very 1st page of the Thunder in the Orient Indy says he's been "wanting in" to the excavation site at Ras Shamra (spelled Bas Shamra incorrectly in the comic) "ever since Schaeffer first dug up these tombs 8 years ago". Claude Frédéric-Armand Schaeffer was chosen to excavate the site in 1929 and then worked on it until the 1970's. Eight years after excavations began in the area would put the story at 1937 (BEFORE FOA), but then he did find tombs in 1931 and 1932 which could put the story at 1939 or 1940. It depends when he "first dug up" the tombs and which tombs. That would indicate 1931 to me, but could even have been different tombs dug up between 1929 and 1931....

One other clue is Indy calling the mountain city of Chanri-Ha "Shangri-La", saying that "Shangri-La" was a place written about by James Hilton in "a recent book called Lost Horizon". Although Lost Horizon was first published in 1933, it was not published as a paperback book until June 1939.

At Chanri-Ha (p193 of the Omnbus), Indy has to stop a human sacrifice, which takes place on "The sixth day of the sixth moon". Assuming this is to mean the 6th day after the 6th FULL moon of the year, that would give us 8th of June 1939 or 25th of June 1940 (depending on what year you go for). If this is right, then 8th of June 1939 would make it too early to tie in with the publishing of Pocket Book #1 in June (and for Indy to have time to read it), so I would go for June 1940.

Young Indiana Jones and the Crown of the Roma

The Indy wiki page says that Gypsy Revenge was also published under the title of "Crusader's Crown" and at the bottom in the cover gallery shows a Japanese Manga style cover, so I'd guess that they're the same.

I don't have any of the novels with me just now, will check those for you when I pick them up.

*I've not read through this whole thread, so if all of this has been said before, please forgive me*

Yes, "Crown of the Roma" is the same story as "Gypsy's Revenge".

I mentioned the 1931 adventure a couple of times in this thread but didn't realize the anachronistic mistake in the naming of Kafiristan. Nice catch, Howlrunner!:hat:

Remember that Sophia & Indy first met in Iceland during the Jastro expedition (which would have been c.1929/30) so they already knew each before the events in "Thunder in the Orient".;)

Thanks for the help so far, guys! :hat: Stoo, are you saying you think the 1938 date for Thunder in the Orient still works? The reasoning for 1940 looks pretty good to me, but I'd prefer to keep it in 1938 if possible, since it's been officially dated there in various sources.

As I mentioned a few days ago, I've been working on an Indy timeline that's as comprehensive as possible. The goal is to have a timeline that places everything, including journal entries, in-universe documents, and adaptations. DIrishB's is the most comprehensive I've seen before, so I've used it as a template (and to honor his work, since it'd be a shame to see such an excellent timeline left untended). I've kept most of his dates, altering only a few of them.

Some of the dates on this timeline are arbitrary, since some stories don't give firm clues as to their placement. Others will no doubt be controversial. LFL has never put as much effort into consistency for Indy as they have for Star Wars, resulting in numerous conflicting dates and dating clues for a number of stories. The films are the worst in this regard. Assigning them dates is an exercise in picking your poison. There are also conflicting dates for some Young Indy episodes, Temple of the Forbidden Eye, Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb, and others, as well as the curious fact that Indy kept multiple journals. I'd love to see creative retcons for these (different calendars in use?), but I haven't attempted that here. When various stories conflict, I have left them at their stated dates. For example, there are massive conflicts between the dated letters for Temple of the Forbidden Eye and other stories taking place in 1935 and 1936. Instead of trying to reconcile them, I have left these items at their locations in the hope that someone can figure out how to reconcile them. The only exception to this rule I've allowed myself regards those items that are supposed to take place during another story. For example, some of the entries in The Lost Journal of Indiana Jones are set during the films, but are given dates inconsistent with where I've placed the films. In these cases, I have listed these items after the films they are supposed to be concurrent with.

I would love to get feedback, as I know this timeline isn't perfect. If you notice any errors, point them out. If you know of any omitted items, please let me know. I don't yet have dates to the month for some portions of the novels. I may be missing short vignettes and in-universe documents from some of the WEG rpg books, since I don't have all of them. There may also be video game levels I don't have listed (like those of the NES Young Indy game, since I don't know which episodes it adapts).

Timeline Key:
The 4 Indy films are bolded and underlined.
The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones are bolded.
The comics are italicized and underlined.
The video games are underlined.
The novels are italicized.
Anything preceded by an underscore is either an adaptation or set during the preceding story.
Anything Blue is a foreign only tale.
Anything Green is a Choose Your Own Adventure or Find Your Fate novel.
Anything Red is an RPG adventure.
Anything Purple is an in-universe item (e.g., journal entry, letter).
Anything Yellow is a children?s book.
You have my apologies for lack of elegance, since it?s hard to format this sort of post in an attractive way, and for the multiple posts (this timeline is way too long to fit into a single post).

With all that out of the way, I give you:

Although this timeline disregards the conclusions over in this thread:

http://raven.theraider.net/showthread.php?t=14568

... this thread is the most recent timeline discussion, so I'll put what I believe is a new observation from the Forbidden Eye Field Guide map here.

The map indicates it was drawn by the expedition cartographer on Dec 5, 1935. At some later point, Indy wrote various annotations on top. That's more evidence that TOTFE has two distinct phases - the initial expedition, and Indy's later recovery of the tourists.

For the map, check out:

I didn't ignore that thread, as I'd never seen it before. Thanks for pointing it out. I think the idea of their being two phases to the ride works well. Furthermore, my timeline actually uses pretty much the same dates as that thread does.

Thanks for that info! And the mangas are, as far as I know, original manga comic adaptations of several Young Indy episodes.

Seven Veils timeline discrepancy

I am re-reading Indiana Jones and the Seven Veils and noticed a date discrepancy. The novel states that Indy & Deirdre were in Tikal, Guatemala on March 7, 1926. They returned to New York, stayed for just over a week, then set sail for Rio de Janeiro aboard the RMS Mauretania. It was to be an 8 day cruise, scheduled to arrive in Rio on "Shrove Tuesday", when Rio has their carnival. I checked online and discovered that Easter of 1926 fell on April 4. This means that Shrove Tuesday fell on February 23, 1926. Indy & Deirdre also got married that day as the ship was pulling into port. This means that they could not have been in Tikal in March. The standard chronologies state that they were in Tikal in March, and searching for Percy Fawcett in April. Shouldn't these events have happened at least a month earlier?

The Tangiers segment in ?My First Adventure? doesn?t specifically follow Egypt since there are no references to the previous chapter in the
scenes after Ned & Demetrios...and, of course, Henry Jr. looks older! (The pre-May TV date for Egypt is because "Florence" was originally May '08.)

Stoo, do you think it would be possible to place Tangiers after British East Africa? I ask because I was just reading Richard Brightfield's adaptation, African Safari, and found that it contains an original scene at the beginning of the book. In the scene, Indy and co. are still on a steamer heading south on the east coast of Africa. Miss Seymour is explaining to Indy about the history of trade along that coast and mentions that the slave trade used to be prominent there. Indy replies with "I hope there aren't any slaves today." That reply wouldn't make sense if Tangiers is set before then.

Well, Plaristes, it’s hard to say since there are 2 different timelines for Young Indy to juggle with. (Damn the DVDs for screwing up the order!)

What you’re suggesting makes perfect sense since Corey is obviously older (and it would fit with the line from the book) but the Tangiers episode was originally planned to come right after Indy’s adventure with Abner in Jerusalem. Both of those stories took place a couple of months before British East Africa. I know this doesn’t really matter much now but it’s still something to consider. Here is how the timeline was first planned for 1909:

1909 Mar – Russia (which became part 1 of "Travels With Father")
1909 May – Geneva (unproduced)
1909 Jun – Jerusalem (unproduced but mentioned in "Peacock’s Eye")
1909 July – Tangiers
1909 Sep – British East Africa
1909 Dec – Stockholm (unproduced)

Since the DVDs are more accessible to fans than the "Choose Your Own Adventure" books, it could create confusion if the placement of Tangiers was changed simply based on that one line from the book. (I wonder if the same, extra scene is included in the "Safari Sleuth" novelization?) Personally, I like to stick with the originally planned order as much as possible.

Ignoring all of that…as I wrote in post #131, British East Africa & Tangiers could/should be coupled together after “Perils of Cupid”. Quite frankly, I’m torn on where Tangiers should be placed and don’t know what to recommend because the DVDs turned the timeline into a stinking mess!(n)

Some of the DVD diary entries don't mesh with the disc labels themselves so, timeline-wise the whole new DVD order is whacked! Therefore, you could probably put Tangiers wherever you logically see fit.;)

Yeah, the DVDs are a mess timelinewise. :( I'm torn, but I'm leaning toward placing Tangiers after British East Africa simply because I like to avoid trampling over as much as possible.

As for Safari Sleith, nope, it doesn't contain that scene. There is an original scene in the book set on the same steamer as in African Safari, but it seems to be set after the scene discussing slavery. In the scene in Safari Sleuth, the steamer has almost reached their destination and Miss Seymour has food poisoning.

I've managed to get a few items I didn't have when I first posted my timeline, mainly Young Indy adaptations. The most significant of them is Indiana Jones and the Tomb of the Templars. I didn't realize this book contains three distinct rpg adventures set at different times, as well as a short Indy vignette in the intro. I've added those adventures, as well as a number of foreign Indy adaptations. The only significant move I've made is to change the placement for the Young Indy episode "Tangiers" (part of "Passion for Life") because of a single line in an obscure adaptation. :p

As before, I'd love feedback, especially if you spot any errors or omissions (for example, since I'm no gamer, it wouldn't surprise me if their are mistakes or omissions for some of the games).

Indiana Jones and the Chronology of Chaos (or should that be the Timeline of Terror? The Obnoxious Order? The Calendar of Calamity?)

Timeline Key:
The 4 Indy films are bolded and underlined.
The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones are bolded (and are now considered the canonical versions over the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles as far as this timeline goes).
