How about top 5 movies besides Indiana Jones, because 9 out of ten people will probably pick that as number one, and 9.999 out of ten people will have it in their list....
And I just realised I hardly watch any other movies....
Here are some, in no particular order:
Black Hawk Down (probably my fav besides IJ)
Platoon
Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Star Wars
The Punisher
The Transporter
The majority of my selections stray away from being popular among the general public or being considered to be high quality movies and are mainly films I simply enjoy, regardless of what others think of it. As most of you have done, I am disgarding the Indiana Jones trilogy and am simply putting the following films.
1. Sahara
2. Mummy series
3. Tomb Raider series
4. To Whom the Bell Tolls
5. GI Jane
Just watched Spartacus (1960). You can now add that movie to my Top 5 list. Peter Ustinov as Lentulus Batiatus was the standout performance for me. Also great music by Alex North.
Instead of limiting to 5 movies, I'll list my all-time favorite movie of a genre and notable runner-ups. I could never compile a list of movies as being my favorite and keeping it as low as 5, 10, 15 or even 50. The runner-ups are listed in the order of which I like them most.
Favorite Historical Drama: Saving Private Ryan
Runner-ups: Gladiator, Platoon
Favorite Crime Drama: Leon The Professional
Runner-ups: Goodfellas, The Godfather, The Untouchables
Favorite Comedy: Dumb and Dumber
Runner-ups: Wedding Crashers, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Robin Hood Men in Tights, Jay and Silent Bob movies
Favorite Action: Indiana Jones
Runner-ups: Batman Begins, Spidey, The Mummy, Pirates of the Caribbean, Sky Captain
Favorite Sci-Fi: Planet of the Apes (the original one)
Runner-ups: Jurassic Park, Star Trek Generations and Star Trek First Contact
Favorite Fantasy: Star Wars (yes, it's a fantasy that happens to be set in outer space)
Runner-ups: The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lord of the Rings, Labyrinth, The Wizard of Oz
Favorite Animation: The Lion King
Runner-ups: Toy Story 1 & 2, The Incredibles, Monster's Inc
Favorite Foreign: City of God
Runner-up: Life is Beautiful
That is by no means a comprehensive list (there are genres I thought of I didn't bother to include), but I didn't feel quite as limited doing it that way than I would have by listing only 5 films.
