Raiders of the Temple of Doom

Now don't bash me for this viewing opinion, but from watching Bonus Material it seems as if the series was almost going to be called "Raiders" instead of "Indiana Jones".

You constantly hear the call "Raiders of the Lost Ark" just simply "Raiders"... and in the Bonus Material for Temple of Doom they call it "Raiders 2"...

how would you guys feel like the films were:
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Raiders of the Temple of Doom
Raiders of the Holy Grail (or whatever)

instead of Indiana Jones and the ...

I personally would've liked it equally... until we get to Young Indiana Jones... then we'd have a problem... because Young Indy isn't always Raiding something...

and what if they were going to do that, then decided to change it and then left it like:
Indiana Jones and the Lost Ark
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

One small point: often production material for such sequels are given a temporary title like RAIDERS 2 because the final film title either hasn't been decided yet, or the studio is keeping the title under wraps during production. It's a common practice, and doesn't necessarily imply at all (by itself) that ToD was going to be named RAIDERS OF something. Scripts, clap boards et all will have such simple titles on them during shooting in many cases.

Well, Raiders has now been unnecessarily renamed into "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark'' for the video and DVD release...So,Looks like they already got you beat!

Interestingly, Spielberg never calls them the Indiana Jones movies, he frequently calls them the Raiders movies. You'll often here him say "Last Crusade is my favourite of the Raiders trilogy" and things like that.

On a side note, I hate the title Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. Indy IS one of the raiders of the lost ark.

I have heard Spielberg refer to them as the "Raiders movies." Kind of interesting.

That irked me at first until I realized it was just on the cover and Raiders of the Lost Ark is still the title on the actual movie.

I think part of the naming the sequels "Indiana Jones and the..." stemmed from the fact that they weren'y planning to make sequels (at least I don't think so), but Raiders was so successful they decided to make another movie: about raiders? No, about Indiana Jones.

What I really appreciate with Indy films is that they've actually all got unique titles instead of just a number added behind them. To us ToD is "ToD" (or "Temple" or "Doom") and LC is "LC" (or "Crusade"). Nobody calls the sequels Indiana Jones II and III.

I'm still occasionally referring to KotCS as "Indy IV" though. Trying to get rid of the habit.

I know what you mean. I don't mind number sequels for the first couple. But once you get to the fourth film, I think it's better to go with subtitles and leave the numbers out. And I prefer Roman Numerals for sequel numbers instead of just regular numbers. They just look cooler, I guess.

In a year or two I'll probably call it Crystal Skull for short.
