I don't know how to say this, but my love for the Indy character has been rather lax lately. That's why I haven't been around too much lately. The big film is coming up next month and I have bittersweet feelings about it. Why? I have no real Indyfan to see it with. Oh sure, I've got friends to see it with, but they don't have the gusto of a real Indyfan. That leaves going to see it by myself, which would suck. And the audience-- oh yeah, they may like or even love Indy. But they still don't have the history and the love of the character I do. Indy and I go waaay back, after all. So I don't know. If I can't find an Indyfan to go with me to see the movie, I may not go at all.
And I'm so sick of being left out in the cold in Hollywood. By that I mean that in order to have anything really special regarding the Indy movie(s), it takes money (which I don't have-- for special merchandise), priviledge (to say, go to the Cannes film festival) or pull (to meet Harrison Ford, attend special screenings, etc). The regular old everyday fan who may have been dedicated to Indy their whole life is religated to seeing the movie and maybe buying a few stupid "action figures" or t-shirts. Oh, but if you're lucky, you'll have a super-duper slim chance of winning something really special in some dopey contest. I wish I lived a priviledged life so I could really experience the Indy film in style. I'm just tired of all the commercial bulls**t. Me, the least I ask for is to see it with an honest-to-God Indyfan. And if I can't get my wish, I may not go at all. It just wouldn't be worth it to me. I wish there was some way we could all get together and see it as a big, happy Indy family.
That is all.

I understand what you mean about not being priveliged enough to do the things that you really would like to do but the same goes for a lot of fans. I don't have a pot to piss in but I will never let monetary problems come between Indy and myself.
Countless times I have trawled through the Raven, gazing wantonly at other peoples merchandise. ( The only decent piece I have is an original TOD soundtrack).
As for going to the new movie, I will go alone if I have too. None of my friends are BIG Indy fans in the same sense that I am.
Get to the cinema alone and enjoy.
Someone should start a thread about Indiana Jones get togethers or viewing parties for the new film. I know people are from all over around here, so maybe here is not the best place. I don't know, just a thought.
Indyologist, if I could go with you to see Indy4 I would, but I live in Australia. I will be in the same position as you though. My partner is not an Indyfan and is not really understanding of my being one. So, it's off to see KotCS maybe with others who are not as thrilled as I am, but who will nevertheless enjoy it in their own way. I like your honesty about the plight of the ordinary Indyfan relegated to mediocrity. Maybe we have to do something for ourselves that takes us out of the mediocre and makes us noticeable. Let's think about it...
yeah i feel the sameway im a die hard indy fan to and i cant buy anything either my prized possesion is my jacket and hat which i got as an early birthday present but im happy for the figures cause i never had any as a kid
and money right now forget about it...... Im losing my house i have to move to california i dont get to graduate with my friends ive known forever my parents are getting divorced,
so right now Indiana Jones is the only thing keeping me going and if it wenr for looking forward to the new movie and action figures hell i dont know what id be doing right now
I know the feeling. Some people, knowing what an Indyfan I am, have said 'we have to go see the movie together' but i'm reluctant because, like you said, they may really like Indy but I know its nothing like how I feel. He's been with me all my life.
yeah i literally grew up with indy from watching the movies since i was 5 to playing indy in the backyard by myself most of the time cause other kids diddnt know who indy really was, I actully learned to swim from watching indy escape the hovitos. I have gotten into a few fights from people insulting indy pathetic i know but indy is a part of me almost like a family member
OK guys, keep your chins up! Let's bank on things getting better. It's not easy seeing the positive in every situation but let's remember the authentic reasons why we are Indyfans. I admire Indy because he's intelligent, adventurous, fit and does what he believes in. I have to keep reminding myself of that all the time. Stay passionate about your fandom and apply it in the rest of your life. Achieve all you want and if you can't, don't beat yourself up for it. Just move on because there is too much good stuff to miss out on. I'm not trying to sound like a cheerleader, but I have learned the power of positive thinking while being realistic at the same time.

I know exactly how you feel. No one I know is what I would call an Indy fan. Sure, they may have heard of it and maybe seen the films on TV, but they don't have nearly the love that I do for the franchise.
For example, my mom sees the films as very goofy and juvenile, and not worth her time. It took me forever to convince her to even watch YIJC (I showed her the German East Africa/Congo episodes, since I know she loves dramas and Frank Darabont's prison films). She loved what she saw, but still has no inclination to see anything else.
As far as merchandise goes, I'm gonna be pretty content with The Complete Making of Indiana Jones and Indiana Jones: The Ultimate Guide.
No luck on this thread, Indyologist? If not, I think it would be noble to drag some non-fans to the theater and convert them. I live close to Modesto where there was a big Star Wars 3 premiere event... but you live in New York, where the onscreen action is! There must be something for each of us to envy about next month's events.

Indy's humble origins, cliffhanger serials, did whatever they could to bring you back next week for more newsreels. They cheated heavily between installments. The filmmakers must have been quite cynical. Certain death was always given a reprieve. So, consider it all homage.
Going to the theater alone is like traveling alone. It's not worse or better, it's different. You can enjoy in your own rythm.
I don't have any hardcore fans like me aroud here, but I will probably carry some friends with me. And what I can't share with them, I will surely share it with you here!
Let me see...each one has its own way of seing things, for you it discourages you to watch Indy alone, fair enough and I respect it.
But as for me, only to the fact of entering in a cinema room and see it sold out it's reason more than enough to make me happy and proud cause there are LOTS of unanymous Indy fans out there!
Well, I'll see it probably with friends, I have one friend of mine who is Harrison fan, therefor me and her will be chating about that with the same enthusiasm level...but there are others who don't feel the same as I do that sadens me of course, but I can deal with that, even though, I must confess I don't understand people who can't be enthusiastic over Indiana Jones as any of us are.
Can you imagine, Indyologist, as you are in the line to get to buy the ticket, you can try to meet an Indy fan, who knows? start conversation, besides, you're from freaking NY!!!!! there must be a fan from the Raven to come and meet you, guys please contact her!!
Now, include me on the list of not getting all of the franshising this movie has...not now in the near future, but I can wait until I get better money conditions. Besides I'm a selective person, there is no need to get it all.
I'd be happy to get this http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Makin...7358581&sr=1-2 and as for the rest if I get more money in the future, great, if not patience....we can wait years for getting what we want, can't we?
Knowing that there are thousands of Indy fans out there is reason enough to don't feel discouraged for keeping a fan or watching it alone, cause my fandom is something personal, it's part of my life therefor I'm OK with it and completed. Hope we all can help you out somehow Indyologist, I've read all of the replies here and they are really something worthy for you to keep on moving with your courage for being a fan.
You want to talk discouraged...I imagine you remember what life was like before the internet... like I do. Remember what it was like being a fan of something and not being able to connect with anyone about it? (Hint for those of you who never knew life without the interent: fandom was much more of a simplistic form of hysteria...unless you were a Star Wars, Star Trek, Beatles or an Elvis fan...there were no such things as mass fan clubs warranting conventions/gatherings, etc... for more minor pop culture references such as Indy)
I'm just happy that I can log on and talk to other people about Indy via places like this messageboard...before '94 I spent my childhood talking to no one about my passions. I'm sure (considering you are an older fan like myself) you had to deal with the same emotions.
At least now you can log on to the board after seeing KOTCS and be able to throw in yiour two cents.

lol dude im with you there i remember only talking to my mom and dad about indy and finally there like SHUT UP ABOUT INDIANA JONES!!!!!!!!!! same with the kids at school
I fear perhaps you have lost the true meaning of the film coming out which is not all the merchandise or being able to afford a hat or a leather jacket, you don't need a whip or the headpiece to the staff of ra to find your local theatre. It's a new movie, the very thing that began your love of it all. We didn't have these figures and cards and posters all these years, yet you still loved the character.
And you'll have plenty of people to see the movie with, goto the midnight showing and you will be amongst a sold out crowd of Indy fans. Random people don't show up at the theatre at 12 in the morning and go, wth, ill go see Indy 4, they will be people who awaited it and are just as excited. People who will love to discuss the 20 years they waited. And I know I would jump at the chance to find a girl that digs Indy as much as myself.
You do not need any toys to enhance the film, simply enjoy the fact that for the first time in a long time there is a new adventure. The first time in my life I will get to see Indy on the big screen, and maybe the last. Then I will come here and see how it has excited other fans.
To be an Indy fan is does not take money or pull my dear, simply a copy of your favorite flick and a place to watch it.

I am a big fan of The Who and went to numerous shows including Buffalo in '96.
Through the internet, several northeastern fans met at Breckenridge Brewery
before/after the show. One of the first of many meet-ups and friendships that
survive to this day!
I wonder if going to see the new Indy movie with Indyologist, is as much fun
as a Who concert?
...and like Lao Che Pun says, at least you have The Raven.

my movie theatre told me there was no midnight showing........

Then find another, drive, bike, walk, get on a bus, your a big enough fan to spend money on a jacket and come to a message board everyday, but your not motivated enough to go a mile or two down the road to see the first Indy movie in 20 years and maybe the last? I would steal a bus if I needed to.
I just drove and hour and a half one way to see Blade Runner on the big screen for the first time in like 25 years.
No one who comes here should try to make an excuse for not being able to see this flick. If people can take off work to stay home and play the new Madden game when it comes out, then we can find a way to work it too. I already called out of work for the 23rd, even if it means I have to work the weekend.
Oh and the people who do get to meet Harrison or Steven or do have large collections are not lucky, believe me they worked to make those things happen. I was not handed a gold idol, I searched for countless hours, got in contact with multiple people, and worked my ass off overtime 16 hrs a day at 2 jobs for 2 weeks to get my idol. Im working an extra 2 hrs a day not because I have to, Im not going out to bars w/ my friends to save money, because I know well enough that there will be a ton of stuff coming out and I will want some. I see people freak out about that Elodie chick for example, well my hat goes off to her, Im sure Ed McMahon didn't show up in Sweden w/ a Giant check and jumbo jet to fedex her to Steven Speilberg. Im sure she worked to make that dream come true, the same way you need to work a little to find a theatre or to find someone to see it with.

Indyologist, believe it or not, I know exactly how you feel.
I have many friends who like the Indy movies but are not die hard fans like I am. There is a cinema about 10-15 minutes away and I will be going on opening night with some friends and will be going by myself as many times as I can.
With regards to merchandising, I am not going to be able to get all of it just yet. I already have the lego sets and will be getting some of the books in May. Added to that, the new movie poster and soundtrack which are not that expensive.
I understand your frustrations and over here in the UK, many of us Indy fans also have frustrations about the recent competions that have been put out, namely the ones on myspace because only residents of the US are able to partake which is not fair for those living outside this area.
After Elstree studios, Wested Leather and Herbert Johnson, I can't help but think that the UK has been left behind somewhat in regards to Indy 4. (On the good side, at least the movie is coming out at the same time as it is in the States).
I'm dragging as many people to the midnight showing as I can! I know several mild* fans of the series that would possibly want to go to a midnight showing, we'll see how that goes...there does seem to be a scarcity of enthusiastic Indiana Jones fans in my vicinity as well. In any case I know my sister will be going with me.
Don't worry Indyologist, we're all in the same boat.
*denotes one who may be moderately excited for the sake of an action movie with Harrison Ford, but not necessarily because it is an Indiana Jones movie.

Well being a Harrison fan myself and oh I don't know what to say, but I take Indy or James Marshall or John Book as the same man's characters....but Indiana Jones does stands up much more than the rest of his characters cause Indy movies have lots of more to discuss about than any of them, and notice that the other movies of his are highly intersting too.

Blade Runner has my third favorite character of his, Rick Deckard (second being Han Solo of course).
