Kurt Austin (clive cussler series)

I'm a big Dirk Pitt fan. I like Cusslers work although I'm well aware there is many out there full of criticism towards it.

Currently reading 'serpent'. A newer series featuring another character working for 'NUMA'.

Really I was wondering what the point is though as Dirk Pitt and Kurt Austin are almost identical characters. Both have the european 'side-kick' aswell.

Based on what I've read so far you could sway the name and it could just as easily be another Dirk Pitt adventure.

Just wondering why he opted to create a new character when he couldve just expanded on the Dirk Pitt series.

The book is still really exciting though and it doesn't take away from it being a good read. Interestingly Indiana Jones is mentioned at least twice in the book.

Any other Cussler fans? anyone else read serpent, what are your opinions?

Big Cussler fan (though more Dirk Pitt than anything else), I've read all the books up to Deep Six.

As a fan, I was extremly dissapointed that Sahara (however unfaithful to the original book) did not catch on and create a film series of its own. Its a great, sit back, Saturday afternoon kinda film.

I figured Kurt Austin (and Dirk Pitt Jr too) are the author's methods to avoid "jamesbondifying" his most popular character e.g. bypassing the dilemma on how one man can keep on going from one decade to another without any explanation given about it his eternal youthfulness.

Yeah my latest purchase was 'Fire Ice' where it mentions Kurt Austin was a 'new hero for a new millenium'. As you say by the year 2000 Dirk Pitt would have been getting on a bit. After looking at the bigger picture I think I'm actually in favour of this method to carry on the series.

p.s to above post. I actually enjoyed sahara the film. Inca Gold would make an excellent film. I was just talking the other day with my dad about how I was suprised more of cusslers stories havn't made it to the big screen. There is plenty of action and some excellent material that would make for some brilliant viewing.
