Expert on the occult?

Indy was referred to in Raiders as an "expert on the occult." What exactly do you think this expression means?

He is a cryptoarchaeologist. Also, [ZIR], I always thought this would be a great song to be used in a Mutt spinoff. I looove The Sonics.

I knew it. He was a MASON!

I'll spare the old timers self promoting links on this.

Lucas and his writers have done a fine job portraying Dr. Jones' professional life. However, the more I ponder that "expert on the occult" bit, the more I long for an Indiana Jones who voluntarily quests for a paranormal archaeological relic. Which is to say, without someone just dumping an adventure in his lap. It would be kind of cool to see what he would go after if he could pick something himself.

(Purely speaking about the films. I haven't read any of the books.)

Well, I'm sure he does that whenever he can. But even in the Indiana Jones universe, I'd imagine that legitimate supernatural artifacts are still very scarce and very hard to uncover. Which is why we always see him going after non-supernatural items in the films' unrelated prologue sequences.

From a dramatic standpoint, however, it's simply more interesting to have Indy sucked into an adventure through outside means than have him simply wake up and say, "Hmm, no good movies out this week-end, I think I'll go search for Excalibur."

Eh, I've always thought of it as this:

He's an archaeologist, knows a lot of different cultures/religions/strange customs, which would easily be considered "occult."

The fact that he was familiar with the Thugee ceremony in ToD shows that he had knowledge, at least to some extent, on the occult and various rituals.

You beat me to the punch he's witnessed black magic first hand and has experienced things that should have never been seen by any one in over a hundred years he's better than any book you can find at that time!
