Re-releasing old films back in theaters (wide release)

For the second week in a row the 1994 Disney movie The Lion King has been beating out the competition including Brad Pits new film Moneyball. Of course i'm sure the fact that it's in 3d is a factor, but is it really?

With this development I think it would be nice to re-release older movies back on the big screen nation wide... I mean that's how it used to be in the 60's and 70's before the "blockbuster". In that time you could go down to your local cinema and catch The Maltese Falcon or something. Of course small towns and art house theaters still do this. But think about Raiders opening for a wide release again? If an older movie can generate income why not re-release it wide again?

Thoughts?

Yes. I actually think old films, particularly "classics" should be re-released every ten to fifteen years. Gone with the Wind was re-released every ten years after 1939 up till the 60s if I'm not mistaken.

Imagine, for example, being able to see Jurassic Park in the theaters if you weren't able to, or weren't alive, in 1993.

I'm so glad The Lion King is doing so well. Unfortunately, I do fear the studios are going to look at it at as a sign of 3D rather than the movie itself.

Still, I'm excited about all the possibilities of old films getting rereleased, especially in this age of streaming. Ghostbusters is supposed to be rereleased again. Hopefully Raiders came come back.

And there's plans for Star Wars as well, right? It's beginning to look like a trend.

Disney was probably one of the last companies to stop doing the rotational re-release. The Disney Vault of the past couple decades, that determines when VHS, DVD, or Blu-Ray releases come out in a staggered fashion, originates in their old theatrical re-releases.

Jurassic Park is re-released in the UK cinemas this week.

Star Wars as already mentioned is getting the 3d treatment too.

Personally I'd love to see Raiders on the big screen, I never got the chance first time around.
