Since Indy was like a surrogate father to Short Round I wonder if Spielberg treated Short Round's relationship with Willie was like a single father who decides to date again and dates a woman and the child dislikes the woman because she will replace her mother or come in between of the father. I notice some hostility in Short Round when Willie doesn't call Indy, "Dr. Jones" like he has problems accepting the fact that Indy took this woman along like a child jealous of the father's girlfriend. Near the end he starts to be more kinder to her like a child accepting her as the new member of the family.
It's interesting that you bring this up. Actually, after playing the Lego Indy video game, I realized how, even though she is incredibly self-centered, Willie is really the only female lead that would have worked when put with an actual child. I don't see Elsa reacting well to Short Round. Not that I think she would be cold, necessarily, but I don't see her putting up with Short Round's nonsense. I even have a hard time seeing Marion (who was revealed to be a mother!) with Short Round. Willie shares a child-like personality with Short Round, although at times Shortie is more mature than she is. While Marion and Elsa seem to take charge of situations, Willie and Shortie are more like followers.
And I realize that this doesn't really have anything to do with your post, but I thought it would fit here anyway.

No, no this is good, food for thought. Now that you mention it Willie does act like a bratty child at times maybe not as bad as Veruca Salt but she still a child and you can tell (that whatever she is) she could be a decent mother if she wasn't so greedy and self - centered

Short Round seen Willie as a wedge that would drive inbetween him and Indy.
I think that he was jeaous of Willie, and became even more so when Indy started to pay attention to her.
But, after their adventure in Pankot; Shortie seen her in a new light, and became attatched to her and liked her.
Also, Willie changed through the course of the adventure. She became interested in the legend of Shiva while they camped in the jungle. She was trying to listen to Indy but the elephant kept bothering her.
She even tried to help Indy, by throwing rocks at the large Thugee. She acted motherly when she would not let Shortie go out and help Indy against the same Thugee.
Yes, Willie changed for the better, and became less uptight by the end.
I have always liked to think that Willie went back to America, and brought Shortie with her and maybe adopted him.
I've thought about Willie and Shorty's re;ationship before, and I thought it was interesting. The way they are both very different, he is a poor kid, she is rich and quite shallow. Through out the movie, they do not especially speak much to one another, and towards the start especially, when they do, it is usually not friendly chat.
However, towards the end of the movie, both of them change somewhat. As mentioned Willie does become interested in the story of Shiva, she throws rocks (she gets dirty!) and even assists unlocking the children's handcuffs. She always punches the enemies in the mine cart.
Towards the end Indy, Willie and Shorty become like a make-shift family which is nice. WIllie even saves Shorty and hugs him when he falls through the wooden bridge, and of course, they both team up to stamp on Mola Ram's hands together.
I like when Shorty laughs and covers his eyes when Willie and Indy kiss at the end too.
Some very good points. I too have entertained the notion that Willie adopted Shorty in the States, though I really doubt it. Perhaps they checked in on each other though. Maybe Shorty would finish his day at Boarding School and sometimes stop by Willie's, where she has a cute little house with a garden (like in Shanghai). Milk and cookies at Willie's anyone?

While I'm with you to a point, I don't know what you're referring to by "nonsense" - just what of Short Round's behavior requires "putting up with" it?
Or do you just mean from the POV of Elsa or many other adults, who'd just want as little to do with a kid from the get-go?

I'm gonna have to disagree with this one, Willie is funny and all, but I think Marion would have done just fine with shorty, Marion seems much more mommyish than Willie
I think Willie and Shorty would've made a very fine team!
They would go to the supermarket together and Shorty would dropkick the apple stand so Willie could get some suggestive green apples for her many suitors!

I agree with this post.
I like to think she adopted him too. They made a cute team. I thought Indy, Willie and Short Round had great chemistry as a family unit.
You are correct, good sir or madam. Not many agree with me in my opinion of Willie, Shorty and and Indy's relationship.
Good, Sir Drifter, I also agree with your opinion.
At first Willie is an outsider in all respects. To Shorty she's a threat to the special relationship he feels he has with Indy, the surrogate father he vows to protect, no doubt because he doesn't want to lose another father.

We also don't see exactly how Willie and Shortie made it to the top of the bridge. One could assume Willie helped him up in a motherly way and kept him from getting too close to the edge again. Through those acts they form the relationship and he accepts her as a mother figure. A much better parental figure than a swashbuckler who lets him drive the getaway car.
And I think Kate had a good motherly chemistry with the Ke Huy Quan (sp?) and it makes sense since she was a mother in real-life.

I'm a madam.
I'm glad there are others who like the relationship, it was perfect for that movie. There are a lot of people who didn't like the new sidekicks for Indy after the first film, but personally I feel it was good to get to know new characters and feel like everyone just fit for each movie, making each one unique.
