As insane as it may seem, i've been wondering how, if possible, to get rights to write an Indiana Jones book? I know at least 5 have gotten them, including RPG writers and Authors, but i'm wondering how I can get these rights? I'm am an experienced writer and i've been looking into this matter because Indiana is one of my idols(not the totally obsessed kind, i only have his three movies and a game). I'm doing an internship on writing as well and writing that book would give me a hell of a lot of credit. Can anyone help?
well, I'm not the best person to give advice on the indy books, but I think that you would need to contact Lucasfilms themselves, only they can give you the right I beleive.
This is a cool Idea, a new indy book after these past 4/5 years? I'm with that! let me be the first to say good luck, and I will support you all the way.
merancapeman if you are going to write an Indiana Jones book you have to keep the continuity "Ithink thats how you spell that." of the other books , Like have a guest appearance by Shannon he is in a bunch of the Jones book.
PS: Im the big Short Round fan hear so if he is in your book ill take 2.
The umbrella company, Random House, who own Ballantine, Bantam, etc, have the rights to the books. Unfortunately, they are not interested in producing any further Indiana Jones novels. Perhaps a fourth film could sway them to reconsider, but they have been pretty adament so far. Neither, are they likely to give up those exclusive rights. Sorry, pal, but I've been haggling with them since 1999. But if you can do different, go for it.
My thanks go with you all. That last post disheartened me a tad, but i'm going to try as hard as i can to recieve the rights. I've noticed that books like Star Wars(I don't read them...) have been written for a long, long time. I've considered my chances for getting rights would be about 4:10. I am ultimatley determined to write these books. I will try my hardest, and when it's over I WILL write those books....
jk, glad to see you determined, still, perhaps it may be possible to get the right to write 1 book???? perhaps if you use the money from your own pocket, and promise to give Random house a HEFTY sum of the profits, but I doubt you wanna do that, you will be better off making a new, orignal group of charactors and story.
Anyways, I wish you good luck in all your writting, perhaps in 5 years I'll be reading merancapeman's newest best seller

That's it! I'm with you, I say we start a petition!
I'm looking at petition Online, I'll see if I can get something started, but merancapeman, if you have any info you want me to include in it, send it to me rushhour3_2004@yahoo.com
anyways, if we get this going, perhaps the raveners can all sign it, mabey gilles will put it on the raider.net's front page, I'm a friend of the Webmaster of TIE.C, I'll try to get him to put a note on, we can contact indyfan, TIJC, all the big indy sites, I'll even put it on all the indy forums around!
if you guys are in, tell me, and I will start one. hopefully we can get one going!
May the hat on your heads never fall off. I have never met a more generous and kind bunch as you. I won't let you down. I thank you a thousand times....
Lol, i was going to, but my economic status is at an all time 0%. I don't have a job and i can't get any money. I didn't think i'd get help from you guys. I didn't write the book, but now with you guys on my side, there's no way in hell i'm giving up yet...
Lol, too true, too true. It depends on what the higher authorities think. I'm just a pawn on his way to the other side of the checkerboard. Only the master will decide what I change to be, the only problem is surviving to the other side of the board...
Alright, i'm writing an outline. Would it be considered cheating if i asked what kind of artifact should Indy be hunting? Indy needs, like in the three movies, a religious artifact that cannot fall into the hands of germany or, hell , any evil booger out there. Like, for instance, the spear of destiny...
well, spear's been used (in an indy comic).....AND LET THE BRAINSTORMING BEGIN!!!!! it's indy 4 all over again! WOO-HOO! We need a good Idea....everyone put your heads together on this on....because this one is for us...by us!
$$$$$$$$-befor you can write that book....we're ganna need a hefty wadd of cash to get those rights...am I right?
007-trust me, if you write a bond book, I'll be behind you all the way...(note my name...I'm a HUGE bond fan)...we have plenty of bond fans here on this forum...plus I can get the people over at the CBn forum....
If you chose to go through them to publish it, then you will need to povide a manuscript of no less than 300 pages properly formatted, submitted through an agent, as no unsolicited manuscripts are accepted and returned without reading. However, in order to deal with Ballantine, they strongly recommend you having previous writing experience, etc. I hear they pay good though. But there is one more slight detail:
"Ballantine Books have no plans on doing any new Indiana Jones books." - Kuo-Yu Liang Associate Publisher of Ballantine/Del Rey Books
But good luck. Perhaps Indy 4 might encourage future books. They may even do an adaptation.
Problem # two. I had no plan on you guys helping me, and now that you are i am forever gracious, but i have NO MONEY, and when i say NO i mean zip. I think i'm going to have a tad bit of trouble. I don't want to dissapoint you and am, quite frankly, worried and nervous... Very nervous. Is it just me, or do i sound like a jerk?
Ok guys, I have a little something that might help. This is just ONE idea, i'm definentley going to different areas. (Heck, this could even be the beginning of the book)
I found this.
"How strong She is! Without contender,
She honours Her name as Queen of the Cities.
Sharp-sighted, keen as God's protector, Right Eye of Ra,
disciple facing Her Lord, bright with the Glory of God,
wise upon Her high throne.
She is Most Holy of Places, a mecca the world cannot parallel."
-Leyden Hymn 10, 19th Dynasty.
What this refers to is the wife of Tjeti (pronounced yetee). The tomb of Tjeti is, if i'm corrected, located in Amneta, north of The Valley of Kings. Also, i caught a little ditty about Mansions of Eternity. The guy that wrote the introduction sounded like a drunken yoda. ("In times these, Mansions of Eternity beneath the sands, damaged are.") What do you guys think? Is there any religious artifact that can be used here?
Or is Egypt being used way too much? Should i use jungles or some other lush tropical area?
This sounds to me like a really cool story. I'd have used this if i had found it first, and i don't think that many of the novels are actually set in the desert.
Well, i need a religous item to incorperate with it. Once i have an artifact i can get to work on the plot, then send the outline. For the meantime, Dark Horse comics may have done the Spear of Destiny, but it really wasn't called that. It's the Spear of Longinus, or the Sacred Lance. If thats not good, i need help finding something connected to a religious event. The lance was thought to have been stabbed into the side of Christ. Every owner of that lance thereafter had extreme power. There are more posts related to this... http://www.theraider.net/theraven/sh...?threadid=5303
You are not a publishing house that is able to produce the quantity of books necessary for aquisition of rights. The MINIMUM quantity of paperbacks printed in regular trade books is 50,000 copies. Any contract with the rights will require most likely, no fewer than 100,000 copies. You also do not have the equipment to produce these books. That alone would cost you MILLIONS to aquire and build the facilities to house it - not to mention marketing, etc.
Lastly - you are trying to aquire the rights from a corporation for a popular culture icon that is more valuble to them than you. Furthermore, you are taking on a corporation that has an annual income on average of over $900,000,000 dollars! Nine Hundred Million Dollars.
I'm sure that your idea for producing an Indy story is great, but you have already made it clear, you have no story yet outlined. I'm not trying to burst your bubble, but I am trying to save you from spending time on a project with certain assumptions associated with it and discovering afterwards the reality of the business of publication. Look, I have been fighting with these guys for FOUR YEARS. Trust, me I know their stance. Besides, like me, you would have to produce FOUR novels and the market would have to be viable for them. Meaning that you must be able to sell what you create.
The thing is, you think you can just go up to the world's LARGEST publisher of English printed books and finagle the rights to an American Icon from them with absolutely no professional writing experience or knowledge of the publishing world. Sorry, fellas, but it looks like Black Jack in Vegas and I assure you the House will win.
