I keep reading post after post of people complaining about Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb. Everything from the graphics to the controls have been passionately vilified. I cannot understand this.
1. The Graphics: What exactly is wrong with the graphics? Granted I have a fast machine, but the graphics are jaw dropping on my machine. Every level gives such a sense of space and depth. I stare wide eyed at each new level. I keep up with most newer games on the market and can say that ET more than meets current gaming standards. (It actually exceeds them as far as I'm concernced!)
2. The Controls: The controls took some getting used to. There is no doubt about that. I truly believe, though, that the reason is that we're all so used to the traditional WADS + mouse first person shooter controls. Once I got past this mode of thinking (and it is hard, like trying to suddenly ride a bicycle with three pedals instead of two) then I found it to be no problem at all to control Indy. Swimming is a little annoying, definitely; the controls here could use much work. Normally, though, I have found the controls to be not only adequate, but at times, perfect.
I can only conclude that (as with every product, movie or game, with the name Lucas on it) expectations were too ridiculously high. Give Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb a chance, and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. It's got more going for it than you realize.
I too thought the graphics were extremely good-looking, like I've said before, Istanbul is a marvel to behold, especially when at high peaks.
As for controls, I wish they were more responsive and the camera more manageable but despite these flaws the controls were fine enough to play the game through.
My only major complaint is how frustrating the game is sometimes (ie no saving). I used to swear at the screen when I was little playing on a Mega Drive/Genesis but this game brought back that sad little habit, luckily it has so far been contained to only Indy.
Best game I've played this year so far is Splinter Cell.
I agree... Why is everyone complaining. The grafics are great. The controls are easy if you use a game pad. I bought one with a little thumb joy stick that allows me to move Indy as fast as I want him to. The game play is fun and challenging. ET is the best game I have played all year!
I have the XBOX version and I thought it was awesome.
It was actually better than I thought I would be. The graphics were fantastic. The character model for Indy was dead on. It played just like you would expect an Indiana Jones game should. Whereas Infernal Machine felt more like Tomb Raider with Indy in it instead of Lara.
I have not played the PC version but the XBOX control is flawless. My favorite Indy game to date and one of my favorite games of all time.
The only thing I didn't like was the lack of in game saves. Some of the later levels get fairly long. The only problem the XBOX version really has is a couple of sound glitches.
I just hope we don't have to wait another four years for the next one.
I played the game for PC and I loved it! it is by far one of my favorite games ever, but there was one thing that bothered me, and that is the same thing that bothered me in Infernal Machine, TO MUCH MAGIC STUFF!! it was fine untill the last level, the netherworld, that is when it started lacking the feel of an Indy movie. But up untill that part the game was awsome.
I've only played the demo, so maybe it's not fair for me to judge (but I will anyway... hehe).
The graphics are really nice. I don't know what people were expecting. If I had any complaint about them at all, it's only that the Ceylon level is a little monochromatic... it's all shades of green. Some variety here and there could have improved things, but overall, I still think it looks good.
The controls are annoying. I'm sorry, but I really would have preferred the standard method like IM used. I don't like having to whip the mouse around to turn Indy. But what makes matters really bad is that if I die while I'm struggling with the controls, I have to replay the whole level because it won't let me save. The inability to save on a PC game is just inexcusable, and the fact that I die not because I didn't know what to do, but because I couldn't figure out how to use the controls, makes things really frustrating.
Fortunately, LucasArts was kind enough to release a demo, so I was able to see these problems in advance, and I saved $40. Still, the game might be worth trying once it hits the bargain bins. For $9, I could live with some annoyances.
Originally posted by indydude Randy, I understand what you mean about the controls and saving but do not let that stop you from getting the game, the demo does not show you much.
I will probably buy it, but only once it hits the bargain bins. I do that with most games anyway, even ones that I really like. Besides, right now I'm a few weeks from buying a condo so I can't really be throwing money around. By the time I'm back to buying games, I should be able to get a used copy on Amazon. And I'll enjoy it much more if I manage to get it cheaply.

Man! Splinter Cell must be a good game... my friend was going to get ET, and then another kid told him about SC, and he came up to me and said "#$&@ that Indiana Jones game! Splinter Cell is way better!" and I told him, "You have chosen... poorly."
Splinter Cell was good, but the ending was bad. I thought the character was going to washington to disarm a bomb and find the guy holding said bomb. But he was just gonna watch it on T.V. I was just mad over it. A big hype about a dirty bomb through-out the whole game and you just watch it get covered up.
O.K. the subject.
People today just want things biggger, better, and faster.
If it's not there way, the way they want it, they get upset. (LOL, see above)
But Emperor's Tomb was good. Didn't like Von Beck's Revenge though.

Splinter Cell was FAR superior to Emporer's Tomb. Not even in the same league. The team that coded Splinter Cell makes the Collective look like a bunch of Junior High programmers. Seriously, its that good.
I had high hopes for Emporer's Tomb. What a let down...
Like I said before, it's the best game I've played all year, fantastic on all counts. ET pales in comparison but nevertheless it is still a good game, just not good enough.
Despite whether Splinter Cell was "awesome" or not I started this thread to show that Emperor's Tomb was underrated. Splinter Cell is a bit off topic. There are many games that are better than Emperor's Tomb. This, however, is the Indiana Jones web board.
I don't want this to sound like sour grapes; I just want people to praise Emperor's Tomb for its excellent qualities which number many. Alongside the many previous Indiana Jones games this is one--if not the--best.
I really, really enjoy this game, but if you are not an Indy fan than probably there are other games better suited to you.
I find it a happy game. The boy in me loves the Adventure Games going off to some mysterious place. It takes me away, for a brief time, from the worries of daily life and that's all I want from a game. Its a piece of escapist fare.
I enjoyed ET alot more that any Indy game before it, but the only thing I did not like about it was the supernatural stuff, it was fine untill the end. In the movies there are supernatural things like the ark and the grail, but you never see Indy going into a second world kinda place. But other than that it was a great game.

Yeah, why do they always have to put supernatural garbage in these games? I enounter the same frustration with Tomb Raider and the Thief series. Both were great until they ended up fighting another "undead" creature. If I want ghosts, demons, etc, I'd play a D&D style game. The bad guys in indy were good enough... but having to throw that funky bladed object at spirits was just blah...
Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb absolutely rocks!
I can't say whether or not I liked the ending since I haven't finished the game yet. From what I've played, though, the game is very good! The graphics are indeed top-notch, and the controls are not as confusing as some here are alluding to.
The WASD controls + mouse are absolutely standard for first-person PC games (which is far more practical than playing first-person games on consoles with gamepads, which I could never get the hang of). I can see where I would have been slightly confused with playing the third-person Emperor's Tomb with the same WASD + mouse controls if I had not already learned to do it first with Splinter Cell. Once I started playing Emperor's Tomb, though, the controls were a breeze to pick up.
Some of the complaints in the various threads here were of legitimate but slight technical problems (like Indy climbing a bit too fast) or of too many supernatural elements (I wouldn't know yet, though, since I haven't gotten that far into the game to see them), but those are undoubtedly not game-breaking stuff in the least; some of the other complaints I've read in these threads seemed like complaining just for the sake of complaining... and for no other reason!
Could the game had made some things better? Of course, but what game can you not say that of? Could a bit more adventure/RPG elements have been added to the game? Sure, I suppose... although quite frankly, the more action-oriented Emperor's Tomb actually has a much closer feel to the movies than the more "talk-oriented" Fate of Atlantis and "puzzle-oriented" Infernal Machine (although don't get me wrong - I loved Fate of Atlantis and Infernal Machine as well as Emperor's Tomb), since the movies had a higher ratio of action than talk and puzzle-solving.
In the end, Emperor's Tomb is a wonderful game! Hopefully we won't have to wait yet another four years before the next Indiana Jones game is released, though.
Originally posted by Von Beck I can't say anything about ET since *sigh* my prize is still awaited on my computer. I look foward to playing it however.
Don't worry, you'll be rewarded soon enough!
