Originally posted by Renderking Fisk Thanks, philhos. LASTCRUSADER, I have ZERO respect for a group that comes into a new nation and makes demands that the culture changes for them. I'm in no hurry to learn to speak spanish for a group of carpetbaggers who are in no hurry to speak the language of the country they are invading.
I'm not by any means saying that a group that comes into a new nation should make those types of demands. These people should be learning to speak english. I'm only saying that having to grow up with a second language isn't all that bad.
I'd also like to point out LC and Renderking that it's much easier for someone to learn multiple languages when they're young (around 2) then it is when they're older (around what we are - I'm 28).
If they were to start teaching my child to learn Spanish as well as English, I wouldn't have much of a problem with it, HOWEVER, until there's more than just English as the OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OF THE UNITED STATES, you want to live and/or work in this country, you better be able to speak English.

i think its about time muslims and christians shook hands and got along. and israel needs taking care of once and for all. maybe it needs to be assimilated into palastine. make them all live together and try to understand eachother.

oops...that sounds like what mr. rhys-davies is complaining about, doesnt it? i guess a lot of people would disagree with being shoved into one big group. but like philhos says, jews, muslims and christians get along just fine over here in the USA. so why not over there?

I think it would be interesting if we saw that Sallah was a bit of a racist and didn’t like Orientals. It would add a new element if Sallah secretly blames himself for Wu-Han’s death. If Sallah was supposed to be in Shanghai but wasn’t because of his dislike of “Chinks and Slants”, and Sallah’s been carrying around this guilt for decades over Wu Han’s death and it came to ahead in Jones4 when a Teenage Short Round is thrown into the mix… Could be good!

Originally posted by Renderking Fisk If I moved to any European or South American country, I hope I wouldn’t stay in my own English speaking ghetto and demand special accommodations. I wouldn’t demand that my son have special classes taught in English in our new country, demand that people speak my language everywhere I go or try and convert the region I’m working in to MY culture, the one I left behind.
Personally, I think one of the main driving forces behind racism in Britain is that immigrants/their families stick together to keep their culture alive. That's fair enough I suppose, but when they do that and exclude British people and culture from their lives, it create problems, especially if they come from a non-English speaking country. Some people can find it almost threatening to walk down their street and hear their neighbours speaking in a foreign language that they don't understand - are they saying something they don't want you to know about, or are they making fun of you in some way? This sort of thing leads to tensions between people, and all too often can incite racial hatred and violence.
Our Government has introduced citizenship tests for immigrants who have lived in the country for at least 5 years and wish to become British citizens. As part of that, they have to know some British history, have at least a basic grasp of English, know something about British institutions, and make a pledge of loyalty to the UK. It's similar to the US system. In some ways, I'd like to see this extended to all immigrants, but not all would want to give up their citizenship of their home country.
This is an interesting thread, however it does have very little to do with Indiana Jones. Yet, I will allow it to remain open, since you all are being adults and discussing this in a civil manner. When the Raven 3.0 is open this thread will be moved to the Misc. Table.
I will note that I am watching this thread and if it strays into a fight it will be closed.
And I was just going to say how well we were doing without any mod intervention...
I think an important point to be made is that here in Britain there is a problem with bogus asylum seekers. The media has jumped on this and made people suspicious of all asylum seekers and immigrants, even though some have every right to be here. Asylum seekers are entitled to benefits and housing whilst their claims for asylum are considered, which is why some people make false claims. Once a claim has been accepted, an asylum seeker is accepted as a refugee, but if the claim is rejected, they are expected to return to their own country.
