I'm really hooked on these Indy-games and looking forward to a new one...
Has anyone heard anything about any coming game? Is there any plans from LucasArts?
If not, does anyone know any similar game? I've already played RtCW and 007-Nightfire, which i liked quite a lot. I've also heard about the "Broken Sword" games, but haven't played them though. Can anyone recommend a game similar to Indy IM & ET?
Well I hope thay do come out with a new Indy game. ET is the only game I have its way I got the PS2. I don't think Ill buy a PS2 game if it don't have Dr. Jones in it.
Well I would buy a Short Round game.
I don't know anything about a new Indy game, but if you enjoyed IM and ET, you will probably like:
Anything in the Tomb Raider series-- IM is a direct rip-off of TR, so if you liked IM, you'll like the TR games. The most Indy-like TR game is "The Last Revelation," which takes place entirely in Egypt and has a solid story line, unlike the other TR games (it also include FAR fewer block pushing puzzles, and a lot more cinematics than other TR games.)
The Broken Sword games-- I haven't played the third one yet, but the first two are excellent graphic adventures on a par with "Fate of Atlantis." All of the games in this series involve historically accurate (to a degree) adventures/mysteries. These are NOT action games, though. They are point & click graphic adventures. If you can find the first game in the series, it's well worth getting, even with its dated look (actually, its graphics hold up a LOT better than FOA.) BS2 wasn't quite as good, but still a lot better than some other graphic adventures out there.
Dragon's Lair 3D-- A light-hearted third person action game that plays similarly to ET, but with a more cartoonish approach. Its graphics aren't quite as good as ET's, but they're not bad at all, and the game lets you save anywhere (on the PC), so in that sense, it has an advantage over ET. The story is a bit feeble (you're a knight rescuing a princess), but the levels have some very imaginative traps, etc. so it's definitely worth checking out if you like this type of game.
Rune-- I really enjoyed this one more than I expected to. It's another 3rd person action game not too dissimilar from ET. It involves Norse mythology, and has some great melee combat (hacking enemies with swords and axes.) It's fairly easy, but very long (over 40 good-sized levels!), so you definitely get your money's worth, especially considering that you can now get it for about $5. Oh, and it controls MUCH better than ET. It felt fluid and intuitive from the first time I played it, whereas ET had to grow on me over time.
Alice-- I just started playing this one, so I can't say too much about it other than that it's a very good looking 3rd person action/adventure. So far it seems enjoyable, but I'm only on the second or third level, so I'm probably not the best judge.
I think I will go for the Broken Sword games. I've heard several guys recommending these games.
However, I'm a bit curious on the Tomb Raider games. I've tried a demo once fo several years ago. Perhaps someone can answer som questions regarding TR.
- How many are there? (for PC).
- What are they called?
- Are the games in any specific order, i.e. does the story coninue in the next game?
- Will they work on XP?
- If not, which games will not work on XP?
- Is it worth playing the first TR games (even if they work on XP) or is the graphics to poor?
- Any other info of interest...
These are all the TR games:
Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider Gold (same as the original TR, but includes 4 extra levels)
Tomb Raider 2 (often bundled with The Golden Mask expansion now, which offers some additional levels)
Tomb Raider 3
Tomb Raider: The Lost Artifact (this is more like an expansion for TR3, but it doesn't require TR3. It only has 5 levels, so be warned.)
Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation
Tomb Raider Chronicles
Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness
- Are the games in any specific order, i.e. does the story coninue in the next game?
For the most part, the stories don't continue. However, ending of The Last Revelation (also called TR4), leads directly into the beginning of Tomb Raider Chronicles (TR5), so those do continue. And "Angel of Darkness" picks up after Chronicles. So, simply put TR 1-3 don't continue, whereas TR4-6 do continue.
- Will they work on XP?
TR4-6 will work fine (um, well, actually TR6 is reportedly extremely buggy and rumor has it that it doesn't really "work" on any OS. I avoided this game, but that's a whole different story.) Anyway, back to your question... TR4 through 6 SHOULD work on XP. For TR1 and 2, you need to download a patch. I THINK TR3 will work okay (I know "The Lost Artifact" works fine on XP, and it's essentially an expansion to TR3.)
- Is it worth playing the first TR games (even if they work on XP) or is the graphics to poor?
The original Tomb Raider is great, but I don't know how much you'll mind the dated graphics. There is a program you can download for it which will enable 3D acceleration for it even on the most current systems, and it DOES make a big difference (I recently replayed the game using it, and it really didn't look too bad... not to say that it was impressive, but it wasn't distractingly bad.) The thing I like best about TR1 is that it focused on exploring long-deserted, underground places. The game felt genuinely erie at times... very atmospheric (for 1996.) TR2 and 3 focused a bit more on modern day environments and a lot more on fighting. The combat system in the TR series is pretty feeble, so it never made sense, in my opinion, to emphasize it. For me, the best in the series is "The Last Revelation"-- it's a HUGE game with tons of levels, improved graphics, and some really original puzzles. It had just enough combat to keep things exciting, but the focus returned to exploring and puzzle solving. "Chronicles" was a short and disappointing follow-up to Last Revelation, but it contained a level-editor, which is kind of fun to mess around with (it has a bit of a learning curve, but you should be able to make simple levels fairly quickly.)
EDIT:
For a newbie to the TR series, I'd say buy the "Last Revelation/Chronicles" bundle. That way you get the best game in the series (Revelation) and the level editor included with "Chronicles." Should keep you entertained for quite a while, and it only costs about $20 last time I checked.
If you like the Indy games, check out Everything or Nothing when it comes out (only for consoles unfortunately). Its basically Bond but in 3rd person, like the Indiana Jones games. And its less shoot-em-up and more focused on stealth and real spy stuff. Of course, this is mainly hype, but the game looks awesome. Check out the news and links at MI6.
Uh.... I'm suprised nobody mentioned the 'Buffy' game, being as ET ran on the same engine. Then again, that might depend on whether or not you like... well... Buffy.
As for a new game, I had thought I heard they planned for another Indy game sometime before the 4th movie was released which could be anytime this year or the first quarter of the next year.
EoN will blow ET away, sorry, but this bond game is ganna rock!
EoN is looking like a February 17th Release, the next few weeks could sway that, but that's how it looks right now
(and it has co-op and multiplayer (multiplayer must be unlocked)..UBER COOL!)'
anywho, as for the indy game, I'ld like to say that we would see one late this year and 1 about the time of indy 4's release...but sadly, that probubly won't happen, what darkweaver says seems accurate
unless indy 4 is indeed delayed to december 2005 as a few rumors has stated, then they could have 1 year each to make a good game on the same engine

Everything Or Nothing. It's the new James Bond game. Personally, although they were certainly good, I'm not a fan of the Bond movies and really not looking forward to the game myself. Instead I too hope for another Indy game to be released prior to the next movie.
I just saw your "signature" at the top of this page. I'm curious, what the heck do you mean when you write "If you want to save the world, just push a few old ladies down the stairs."
I'm baffled. Is it a paraphrase of a popular line or something? I'm just confused. I kind of smiled, said, "Heh." and then thought, "What the heck does it mean?"

Please illuminate me.
In Day of the Tentacle, an adventure game of LucasArts, the main character Bernard says "If you want to save the world, you have to push a few old ladies down the stairs."

Thanks, VP! BTW, how do you pronounce your name? J/K

VeePee. We pronounce all the letters as they are written. Always. But in here when I read a post that mentions my name, I think it as it would be pronounced in English, "ViiPii".

As far as I know, EoN isn't a sequel, and since I don't have any console, looks like I'm not going to be able to get that. Wish Lucas Arts would come up with another game fast!
well, all bond games are a continuous line...but I wouldn't call it a sequel
It's completely different, and looks a lot better. for 1, it's in 3rd person....I see it as kinda a cross between Indiana jones and the Emperor's tomb and splinter Cell
for the first time, bond relies on his fists more then befor, the grachips have been better
there is a theme song, and real actors doing the voices and cyber scans..(pierce brosnan, shannon elisabeth, Willem Dafoe, Richard Kiel, Judy Dench, John Cleese, Heidi Klum, Mya)....writer bruce Feirstein (who helped write goldeneye, Tomorrow Never dies and The World is not Enough)....mucis by Sean Callery (who does 24)......
so it is like A REAL BOND MOVIE...sorry guys, but this is ganna be better then any indy game to date.. even FoA
