Next Gen DVD war

So what does everyone at the Raven think of the DVD format war? You gonna stick with classic DVD or go to Blue Ray or HDDVD?

I'll confessI don't know ANYTHING about HDDVD or Blue Ray, pros or cons... prices, or quality of each. I don't even know whether they are available yet. But I do know I'll be sticking with DVD for as long as I can, and I am bitter that they're offering a new system and old DVD's won't work on them. So, for as long as I can still buy/rent DVD's I'll be keeping my DVD player.

Unless Sony sticks to the plan of loading the PS3 with a lot of copy-protection junk, I'll be getting one... so I guess it'll be blue-ray for me

Not that I know squat about the difference...

I personally will be sticking to DVDs and I doubt that they'll be going away anytime soon. They're much more durable than VHS tapes and a lot cheaper as well. When the price of Blue Ray players goes down in about four or five years I might consider getting one but I'm certainly in no hurry. My DVDs will easily suffice for years to come.

I don't know much about it other than it's the next form of a DVD, so to speak. I believe it can hold a lot more data and things like that. My knowledge is still pretty small about it and I think much of the general public feels the same way. I don't think it will be catching too fast with many consumers.

This should fill you all in

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HD_DVD
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_dvd

I personally have my money on HD-DVD "winning", granted Blu-ray holds more, much more, but HD-DVD is going to be about $20 cheaper per disc than Blu-ray will.

This is nothing more than a replay of the 1980's Betamax vs. VHS format war. VHS won because it was cheaper, despite Beta being better quality. (granted Beta was heavily by the TV industry, but on a mass consumer basis VHS won)

... you could keep the movies/dvds you have and enjoy those... nothing will force you to convert an entire collection. Though, it'd be nice if the studios would offer to replace the old DVDs with the new HDDVDs.

Hmm... well, if I can still use my old DVDs I might go with Blue Ray.

Now I don't know what to think... I don't like the idea of "self-destruct" technology.

I'll just keep to DVDs till the 'war' is over, then from the ashes, I'll dust myself off and buy a player from the winning team. Hoping it'll be blueray, and that they don't have a self-destruct feature.... blargh.
