Why 1986, and not 1988? Brucie doesn't have a film listed for that year, but he was Moonlighting.

Clint Eastwood was mayor of Carmel from '86 to '88...

I went into this flick with no John McClane expectations, I just wanted to see a good Bruce Willis actioner. It even missed that mark. I can even say that his Mutt was less engaging.

An easy fix (not a total fix) would have been to not kill Jack's older CIA partner early on, yielding several "this is not how we do things" phone calls over which Jack gradually shifts his loyalty to his dad.

Much of the fun in Die Hard was the LAPD, SWAT, and FBI power struggles.

I remember watching a DH4 making of feature and one of things Bruce willis said was along the lines that he felt he was the keeper of the keys of the franchise, he knows the character and what can and can't go with John McClane. Well that totally went out of the window with DH5, McClane was unrecognisable from previous films, and not for the first time in a big budget movie the relationship between father and son was terrible. I hope the die hard franchise doesn't end on this note.
