People are dying in the USA

How the Usa has become a super power is beyond me as we make some ot the dumest decisions of any nation. I understand that we are the only industraialized nation in the world to not have a comprehensive health care plan. Correct me if I am wrong here good people.

The Senerio: a man is in a small row boat and he is heading toward the nigera falls for a sudden drop off some 500 meters away. Simple problem for Canada or UK they woulod toss him a rope and he would be pulled ashore. Now the USA has another approach . We hold the sancticty of life so dear we will not allow any one to die if we can possibly save them but we do not just throw a rope instead we wait till he is about to the edge and all the tv cameras are now there and a new series is about to get tarted about his adventure and the media is now swarming a buzz and then we launch a full fledged rescuse mission and we pay the bill now totalling 1 million dollars as we had no law that would allow us to toos him a rope.

Medicare , medicaid and assisted helt care is breaking our federal goverment and every health care facility is guilty of inflating prices and overbilling and now we are drowing in paper work to support ti all and the cost are staggering and will in a few more years break the nation. When about 70 % of the bill yearly to fight iraq or 100 billion dollars would pay for a pan that could take care of every citizen. OR so I am told .

What do you guy think about medical coverage of citizens and mismanagement of the finances of a nation and the abuse and red tape of getting any thing done in America? I have tried to make thi topic broad enough so you will not have to appologize for getting off topic.

Seems pretty extreme to me, not to mention many spelling errors (I'm guessing you were either careless, rushing, or both).
I agree with some things you mentioned. Yes, the media does seem to swarm over almost everything. I mean, I'm willing to bet any US citizen has heard of Brittany Gregory, who lived about 5 miles away from me. As for the rest, being 14, I'm not sure about insurance and health plans.

Good guess but no banana . Actually I cannot spell nor type and always felt communication generally was quite possible without such skills. In fact was amazed once to find that the very CEO's and heads of many of America's super corporations were actually illiterate and simply faked it . I on the other hand am really a super genius trying to fake it !!! Should not be hard for me as I am so smart :)

How old is the average person on this forum? Is itpossible that Steve Rick and Myself are the grand fathers here as I am about to imagine?

how old are you gladhatter?

And why do you write in such a strange manner? You are obviously an intelligent person, but your posts are often unintelligible due to the way they are written. Surely you proof read.

They are not merely the mistakes of a bad speller.

I'm not calling you out or anything, I'm simply curious.

Hey Monkey all good questions and certainly no offence of any kind . I happen to like you a lot already . I tryed to answer you by Pm and realized I sent the cumluative 3 of the pm's to myself so I guess I am pretty dumb. I then tried to email you may answer privatly and danged if it says you do not want to get an emails. SOOOOOOOO I shall not answer this publically ATM as I think it is better answered privatly. I do accept emails from any one for any reason and if mine says differently and you wish to email me for a better reply then my email is : Gladhatter@Gladhatter.net .

Monkey I thinkI owe you and the forum readers a bit better anser and will give parts of it now.

Writting in a strage manner is largly due to my ability to do so generated from the unique subculture or even microcosm that I hail from .

Many of most folks from here would consider yours and the oter posters of theis forum the strage writtersor even thing you were all a bunch of educated lawyers.

Education takes on many forms. I have had a some book learning but more school of hard knocks. IQ is measured in ways that embarrass me when I compare mine to what the average or norms is catagorized as.

Social isolation and fear of association is a troubling thng for me. I come from a life, area geographically and a time where all are neighbors and all are "Friends" . Strangers are welcomed to your home and offered a meal or refreshment and visit. Women are mostly respected and a mans wife is generally ( at least on the surface ) treated with utmost respect ( but I am sure most men have the female domenance complex) and secertly wish to conquer your wife here as any attractive , to them woman any where.

Proof read, I only do that when I am composing an email for a business reply to the averaage Joe customer and some times am far more lax and just interject a lot of my personality into emails that are seeking huge transactions. ( maybe that is why I miss a lot of them) . Personality is the main factor of why I write as I do.

I came here understanding this was a hat based forum similar to other hat based forums and oter IJ interest. Hats are my life and livihood and while I do not come here with financial interest as such, I do come to share my skkills and help some one occassionally with a hat Q. I am not exclusive to knowledge of hats and if I find any issue that is brought up that I fell I can offer any genuine help on then I will address it from a more serious stand point. I think folks are a bit too hung up on the correct way and eloquent speaking and many other things. I am not immune to this same disabilities but I can evade them by just being a dumb hillbilly hick that I am .

In the grander scheme of life , I am a humantarian and an advocater for the underpriviledged. I do not always or relaly ever seek this position yet cannot advoid it as it is whom, I am and I find folks simply sense it in me a frequently and seek me out for this help.

I use to entertain myself by battling the corporate heads of America on any trvial issue just win the battle. I used to lie , cheat and steal from them and justify it saying they would or are doing it to me.

I used to defend the uneducated folks of the applachian maountain range that I live in, in mostly Federal court system as a service to them as they simply had no education and choose to not trust the local attorneys for the claims I helped them with. Rightly so in most or all cases I suppose. Doubly right if I can brag to say I never lost but one case ever and never charged for any case I won. Unfortunatly the case I lost, was my own and later I ended up winning it on appeal but the cost was so great it was also my last.

I finally learned that I was not helping most folks but simply enabling them and help could only occur with social reform and education and thing greater than I understand or could provide.

I have worked with hats for over 30 years since I was 15 yeras old and yet always done oter things at same time as I am not satisfied unless multi tasking.

I met the love of my life a year couple years ago and I married her. I was unemployed for the previous 8 years before I married her on a form of social rebellion and dirt poor.

One day she looked me in the eye having considered my proposal of marriage and she give me her answer in encrypted form and said: You know we are going to be dirt poor all our lives.

I took that to mean she would marry me and I made her a promise. I told her we would not be dirt poor. A couple days later I started getting my hat business back up and running and do it on a serious level. I would have never imagined it to be the rapid start business that it is. We have truly been blessed and regularly have more business then we can do .

This month is our lean month and it gives me some needed time off thus I am back on the Raven.

Finally I would like to add so you can know a bit more about me. I also promised myself to not lie cheat or steal from any coporation, person or entity again for any reason and I will be a better person in the future than I have been in past. I strive daily to keep my promises and surly will not cheat nor steal from any one ever and I find it a harder thing to never lie and sometimes I give the quick and easy answer and later realize it was not th totally honest one and yet I am not sure its a lie. Some times full truth is not the best answer.

Here is a good example I have only scratched the surface of your question in my opinion yet, I am sure many will say its the longest nonsensensical anaswer they have ever read. I think to anser you truthfully would require volumes that should not be written and I will stop at that.

I am 45 years now and I look 70 when I am compared to my wife of 29 years that looks as if she is about 18 .

I took a picture of me wearing a hat for a customer other day and I was about in tears ( an emotion I frequent far too often) to see my aged face. Not from years from miles.

I am a super bad speller to gladhatter and have goten some heat from other members because of it. The best spell checking tool for me is Google image search. All I do is tipe the word I am trying to spell and then hit the search button and see if the image matches the word I am trying to spell.

I don't know how far this has swayed from the original topic of Gladhatter, but I'm not going to nag about it now, since this topic progression is interesting.

Gladhatter, you don't appear as a stupid person to me despite your spelling is far from being perfect. (I'm 25 years younger than you and can seemingly spell English better than you though it's not even my mother tongue.) My own father is a well-educated 49-year-old man (a degree from a commercial institute) and boy he is a bad speller when it comes to typing documents in his own mother tongue. He constantly asks me to proof-read them and every time I'll have to correct a bunch of mistakes. I don't know what it is, since he has one of the most rational minds I know.

I can only guess that it has something to do with that the difference between that language we speak and write is notable. If you don't write a lot, the way you speak is going to affect a lot to the way you handle it once it gets to the literal part.

So don't you worry (same goes to Web), it's completely human.

It can also be dyslexia (I'd be tempted to say it IS dyslexia). People that can't spell are very often dyslexic without even knowing it. I was dyslexic when I was a kid. I have always been a very bad speller, I hardly ever got more then 0% in French spelling at elementry school. It takes a lot of work for dyslexic people to learn how to spell. I worked on my dyslexia with a specialist, but I'm aware that not everyone has the finacial means to do so (without a good health or social security system). It also takes a lot of reading and writing. Today I can 'acceptably' spell French and English. Although when posting at the Raven, you have no idea how many times I visit a certain place: www.dictionary.com, it really helps.

But no worries, it has nothing to do with intelligence, Einstein was dyslexic...

Once a dyslexic always a dyslexic

I two am a dyslexic and dyslexia is something you are born with and it will naver go a way. I was lucky and spent most of my childhood {age 11 to age 18} at boarding schools that specialized in teaching kids with dyslexia.

The schools I went to

There are many different levels of dyslexia. I was only a little dyslexic. Today there are still many things that reminde me that i am dyslexic, but the fact that i can spell resonably well today proves that things get better. Today it really does not bother me at all anymore. I'm aware i couldn't have made long literature studies, but that's OK, i prefer math/physics

Webley and all you are not off topic from what I intended to start wich is just a plain old conversation that folks can join into. If off topic dose not men off topic then what does it mean. If purdy Burd does not spell pretty bird then what does it express .. I am not dyslexic but I sure cannot read off a computer screen and make much out ot it generally. If I get desperate to read something I generally have to print it out. I never cared much for reading and thus remained under educated. The poor folks in the USA are not only dying from lack of management skills in health and business but from under emphasing schooling and education of any real meaningful kind. I find programmer in every country putting the folks in USA to shame in thier zeal for learning and really just understandin from the heart the need for it. In USA its all about college and pary life and in oter countries it may be party time but they really take a good education to heart. here in USA We are dying from many causes including the Parents that allow the children to fall back on them and not learn better. Better ideas better judgement better responsibility and just to be better people.

I find often that also folks from afar automatically think Americans to be crooks and mostly I guess they are correct but its a dang sahmed when it is the default position you are sterotyped with attomatically for being american. Yes sad truth is we are dying but the sader truth is so is the rest of the world where there is no peace on earth and good will to all man.

I yea stupid old me. took 8 years off from doing any thing due to circumstanss I let get the better of me. When i say not doing any thing I mean to say no gainful employment but I sit and learne the computer . Not to let that beconfused with the internet. I then immediatly began to teach what I learned to oters. I fixed computers all over the world for folks and devoted many days some with out sleep to this zeal. I was always questioned however for my deeds either out loud or silently with inuendo. "What is in this for you" ? Well I no longer do the repairs and While my niece still dabbles in the programming stuff, We rarly have time for it any more on any serious level. What still amazes me is that it does not matter what you are offering if it is for free you are always questioned "what is in this for you" ??? Often times for me the only thing in it was the satisfaction of giving and the distrust I get in return makes me to sek something to amke all comfortable with the deal.

I say finally here we are dying in the USA alright and we are dying from the forgotten things that just a generation ago was taken forgranted and that is how to be a neighbor. Neighbor never meaning th guy next door but instead the one you reach a helping hand out to when you see the need and never expect to pull it back filled. The Internet allows us all to be neighbors and I say let us take fullest advantage of it and findourselves living in a better world for having done so.

I have a question for you, gladhatter. This isn't meant to be offensive.

Many people have the same reaction as you did. I mean, they all say that, but no one has any good ideas how to change it. Or does anything to change it besides to speak against it. Everyone complains, lashes out, BUT doesn't do anything. So, have you actually done anything in an attempt to change what's happening?

Yes, I have done some things on a daily basis. I pick out at least 2 hours of every day and donate it to some one or some cause. I thy to keep things in prespective and balance. ( not an easy job for a person like me) So I stay true to my wife first then when I am sure she is secure from enough attention, I try to offer some attention to others. My attentions are usully metered by what I have available to do with . Now that I no longer am doing computer repairs, I cannot longer offe them for free to those in need but occassionally still do so in a pinch. Now I focus primarily on start up hat businesses and lend them help of experience or supplies or leads or contacts. I do small things like pick up trash on a mountain trail or say a kind word in converstions when oters seem only to talk hate. I try to get spiteful and man natured people to show thier better sides. I give second and third chances to people. I fall short of the mark I set almost daily and yet I get up each time dust myself off and I go on doing it over and over again. Do I do any world shaking indivual events ? Well not likly that you will read about or even know about . But when I get a call for 12 pill box hats for airline attentendants with veiling for midleesttern countries and find it sketchy in detail and not so solid in its approach I report ti to the terriost task force and allow the folks if they are being honest to prove them selves up and lose a sale and maybe save some lives. When ask to produce 35,000 hats for the Bush reelection campaign , I offe to supply them at cost, not because I am a republican or a political figgure but because I hope the man offers us 4 more years and an oppertunity to choose from a different set of canidates. I could write on and on about the things I dobut better yet i will ask you to do something also . I will not ask you to do any thing specific or tell about it after you do but just do something even if it is wrong. If it turns out wrong do not get discouraged and do something else. We can all do little parts and with the power of the internet we can get folks to duplicate , replicate and continue and expand on what we can do. Do not let the world die from hatred and division . In the grander scheme of things I find we are all a lot more alike than we are differnt. If we were not when we bred we would produce hybrid offspring or find the copulation as an infertile one and no offspring at all. What do i do ? I do something every day and teh reals question is for each of us to ask our selves and not oters and that questionis what am I going to do. You certainly will not offend me by asking what I do and If I am offended at all it will be privatly that you may not ask your self waht you will do. You being the generic for us all.

I can give you a Canadian Perspective as I AM Canadian. We have centuralized health care, which means its provided out of everyones taxes. It's a good system but not perfect...Canada wants to revamp the system and change to a 2 tier health system. This means that Canada would allow some privatized health clinics as well as have Government funded health care facilities. This would allow us to have a choice, the advantage of having both is that it would bring down hallway medicine and waiting lists; as those who want to pay for thier health care to get faster service can do so.
So that's my brief on our situation. Keep in mind Canada taxes to DEATH! More than half of those taxes go to healthcare. If we continue the way we are our healthcare system cannot sustain itself, that is why we are looking at other alternatives.

Gladhatter, thanks for your explanation. I think I understand a lot better now.

You are obviously an eloquent person with a lot of interesting things to say. I'm sorry I used the word 'unintelligible', it was the wrong word to use.

Don't worry about the spelling.

Has anybody mentioned:

The fact that we go to the doctors for everything nowadays? It used to be when you were sick you took an aspirin, sucked it up and went to school or work. I am not shouting conspiracy here, but we are told to go to the doctors for everything now. Even teachers do not want kids in class for fear others will get sick. A good concept for bad illnesses, but we have taken it to a new level. If people were paying out of their pockets, I guarantee the visits would decrease.

That many doctors are incompetant, and there are quite a few times when treatment is hit or miss and there area multiple visits for the same illness? Or that we (the public) have been treated for sinusitis with antibiotics so many times that they are ineffective. Many doctors let it run its course now to prevent this.

That if somebody was dying on the street, the general public will walk past or watch? Nobody want to risk doing the wrong thing and getting sued if the person dies.

Rick,
I was a lisenced EMT in the State of California in the 90's. I let my quals expire in 1999. Sometimes I regret it sometimes I don't.

One of the important segments of EMT training is the legal aspects of the job. Believe me, it is scary. If you are on duty then you are protected to a certain extent by "Good Samaritan" laws. But if you are off duty you are not!!

To make a long story short, I was kind of shocked, and a little bit disillusioned when my instructor, a 20 year veteran paramedic, told the class in no uncertain terms that if you are off duty, and see someone lying hurt in the street....walk the other way.

Sad but true.

It is way worse than I thought then. I have seen people just stand there when a coworker got caught in machinery and needed immediate help. I cannot imagine being trained to help someone and allowing them to die because you are off duty. We help out regardless where I work if it appears life threatening, otherwise I couldn't live with myself.

Even if you do not have to help, the aftermath is handled as if everybody has a serious communicable disease. A bloody rag used to stop bleeding now becomes hazardous biowaste. Even in the environmental field all unknowns are deemed hazardous until tested (for safety reasons). Trust no one.

Thanks for the insight, Monkey.

You can blame it all on the lawyers Rick.

The most ironic part of it is that even if you SAVE SOMEONE's LIFE while coming to their aid in an off duty status
....you will be sued. The medical care was unsolicited (like maybe they were unconcious???). As a "professional, you are 'required' to provide a certain 'standard' of care. Well...it doesn't take a schister lawyer too long to find some detail where you didn't provide the proper 'standard' of care, .....and then you're toast.

Basically our instructor told us that it wasn't worth it. We would be sued into the ground, we would lose, our careers and finances would be ruined. "walk away" was his simple advice.

But the twist is that if you are an unlisenced bystander, then you CAN attempt to provide care, and not be sued.

So feel free to help, as long as you don't know what you're doing.
