Whats your drink of choice?

For all those who are of age and suitable self-control (disclaimers, etc. etc.)... My personal fave is the "Irish Car Bomb".

Fill a pint glass half full with Guinness. Then fill a shot glass with Baileys. Drop the shot glass into the Guinness, and then chug. Don't sip, chug. Mmm, mmm good.

Quote from The Secret of Monkey Island:

Grog is a secret mixture which contains one or more of the following:

Kerosene
Propylene Glycol
Artificial Sweeteners
Sulphuric Acid
Rum
Acetone
Red Dye #2
Scumm
Axle Grease
Battery Acid
And/Or Pepperoni

As you can probably imagine, it's one of the most caustic, volatile substances known to man.

The stuff eats right through these mugs and the cook is losing a fortune replacing them.

OK, that's one way to make it, VP :)

Sailors on the old seas used to drink rum.
One captain (I'm not looking it up, because I told you not to either) named something like William Groggert, thought that him men were getting a bit too drunk, so he put an order in to dilute rum with water.
And it became known as grog from his name.
And we get 'groggy' from tha also.

Isn't that neat?

Must be my reputation. At least I know myself that I'd never stick anything like that into my mouth.

Yes indeed, original grog is just watered-down rum. Here's one that sounds slightly tastier (and won't kill you). :D

Navy Grog recipe

Scale ingredients to servings
1/2 oz Bacardi Light Rum
1/2 oz Bacardi Gold Rum
1/2 oz Bacardi Dark Rum
1/2 oz Grand Marnier
1 oz Grapefruit Juice
1 oz Orange Juice
1 oz Pineapple Juice

Pour liquors into an ice-filled collins glass. Add juices, shake, and garnish with an orange wedge and pineapple chunk.

Hey has anyone tried a Papa Doble? It is a drink that Hemingway invented while living in Cuba:

Ingredients:
1 shot White rum
1 shot Rose's Lime Juice (sweetened)
1 shot Grapefruit juice
Ice
1 splash Grenadine

(As appeared on the Webtender)

Mixing instructions:
Shake rum, grapefruit juice, and lime juice with ice and pour or strain into glass. Add a splash of grenedine.

The first time I had this was when I was in Key West during the Hemingway Days Festival.

I've also gotten into wines, lately, too. I love Spanish wines, like Don Faustino VII.

Note: if you're out of splash Grenadines, one frag Grenade will do just as well.

Yes... you can't tell the difference. In fact, you can't tell anything anymore.

I am very much a wine connoisseur. Some of that comes from my recent endeavor into the cooking world. (I competed in a potluck contest and won)

There are several restaurants around the southland here that teach and emphasise food and wine pairings (which really helps teach the palate about how different wines will be enjoyed, either alone or with food). But I believe a wine thread deserves it's own vine to grow on, maybe a wine review thread? Who knows?

As far as the papa-double, I have had it, and enjoy it as a refreshing break on the hot So. Cal. days. Trouble is, it often gets lost behing the easy and convenient bottle of beer.

Concerning wine I have an advice for the young men taking their lady out to a somewhat fancy restaurant. If you don't know what wine to take, just order a BROUILLY (Beaujolais). It's one of the only red wines that's supposed to be served fresh, it's an elegant wine, usually very much appreciated by women, and it's affordable. Now don't go thinking I'm a wine specialist, this is just what my dad has taught me.

Usually red wine goes with red meat. White wine goes with fish and pink wine (rosé) goes with anything but it's more of a summer wine.

No one's said absinthe yet...

Yikes, the memories (or rather, lack thereof). *winces*

Avoid bright green beverages at all costs.

I have found myself drinking vodka when attending parties/clubs. However, I do not recommend drinking vodka or any type of alcohol on an empty stomach. I learned that the hard way last week. It was rather funny, actually, but I'll tell y'all about it another time. ;)

I've never had it. It's hard to find in France...because it's illegal.

My friend and her flatmate drank a bottle of Absinthe between them one night. They woke up in bed together the next day, naked, with no recollection of what had happened...

Still, that's one way to start a relationship - they're still together nearly 3 years later, so Absinthe really does make the heart grow fonder!

I'll get my coat...
