Half Dutch Wu Han

Finally found an appropriate Wu Han thread for something I've been meaning to mention for awhile.

I remember reading that Wu Han was half Dutch and half Chinese. I thought it was in either the James Kahn novelization of "Doom" or the recent young adult version by Suzanne Weyn but can't find it the text now. Does anyone recall reading this and from where?

Been reading Dinosaur Eggs recently, and I'm sure if it was in there, I would have noticed...

Being Dutch myself, something like that would stand out for me... (y)

I believe I've heard this before! Not in Weyn's Novelization, I've read that one. I think I learned about Dutch Wu Han from the Wiki. It probably was mentioned in the Kahn Novel.

Wu Han allies with Indiana during his battle with Lao Che. He is killed by Kao Kan. Max McCoy's prequel novel Indiana Jones and the Dinosaur Eggs detailed Wu first met Indiana in 1914, during his trip to China with his father. Years later, he is studying political science when his parents and sister die in an influenza outbreak. Their ashes wind up in the possession of Che, who uses the promise of a proper burial to force Wu into servitude. In 1933, Indiana meets Wu in Shanghai on his way to Mongolia, and steals his family's ashes from Che, securing his old friend's freedom. Indiana inspires him to study archaeology upon his return to school.Wu also aids Indiana in the 2003 video game Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb, set just before Temple of Doom. He regularly arranges Jones's transportation

Emperor's Tomb gets confusing because the novels and the movie state he's known Indy for years. Yet in the game, its practically their first meeting. Indy doesn't know who Wu Han is

I've always thought that when Indy said, "Who the hell are you?" he just didn't recognize him because Wu Han was standing in a shadow. The next line after the cut should be, "Oh, Wu Han, it's you. How have you been?"

Indy and Wu Han meeting in 1914 is from Wu Han's bio in the Temple of Doom Sourcebook. (And Short Round ain't Kennon Wong ;) )

It's Kahn's novel.

Already stated but:
Indiana Jones and the Dinosaur Eggs (novel)
Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb (game)

There are brief references to Indy and Wu Han doing things in:
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Sourcebook (RPG)
Suzanne Weyn's Temple of Doom junior novel

Thanks, Leland.;) Before posting, I skimmed through the pages and couldn't find it. I wonder where James Kahn got the idea that Wu Han was half Dutch? As the official keeper of Indy's Chronology, have you any speculation on Wu Han's parentage?

Biography

Half Chinese and half Dutch[1], Wu Han was studying political science when his parents and his sister died in an influenza outbreak. Their ashes wound up in the possession of the notorious gangster Lao Che, who used the promise of a proper burial to force Wu Han into servitude. In 1933, Indiana Jones met Wu Han in Shanghai on his way to Mongolia. Upon learning of Wu Han's predicament, Jones stole his family's ashes from Lao Che, thereby securing his old friend's freedom. The encounter inspired Han to return to school, this time studying archaeology.[2]

Jones and Wu Han crossed paths again in 1935 during Indy's quest to find the tomb of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. Wu Han's rickshaw provided Indy transport around Shanghai, and his junk boat ferried Jones to Peng Lai island, home of Marshall Kai. When Indy later needed a ride up the Yellow River to Ganzhou, Wu Han came to the American's aid once again.

Wu Han would also join Jones, and the boy Short Round, on a trip across the Himalayas where the three were set upon by nomadic thieves during a yak ride.[3]

Later that year, Wu Han and Indy obtained the ashes of Nurhachi, the first Emperor of the Manchu Dynasty, and attempted to trade the remains to Lao Che in exchange for the Peacock's Eye, planning to fly the diamond out to London by way of Bangkok[3]. Lao reneged on the deal, however, and his son Chen shot and killed Wu Han.

Behind the scenes

Wu Han was portrayed by David Yip in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Alan Drevin provided Han's voice in the Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb video game.

There is inconsistency for when Wu Han and Indiana Jones first meet in the canon. The Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Sourcebook has their first encounter in 1914 while Indy and his father are searching for clues to the location of the Holy Grail. Indiana Jones and the Dinosaur Eggs has the meeting take place in 1933, with which Indiana Jones: The Ultimate Guide agrees, while Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb has the event taking place shortly before events of the Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom in 1935.

The novelization of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom states that Jones would send money to Wu Han's family. However, it is unknown which family this refers to.

Wu Han is killed by a bullet in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom but in LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures, he is killed by poison.
