Anything Goes

Anyone ever listened to the 1934 English original version of Anything Goes? It's pretty, sounds classy but had racy lyrics for the time.

Interesting! So, it's the same song, same lyrics?

I know on the IMDB soundtrack listing it has Kate doing the vocals for the Doom version. Love that opening number with the titles behind Capshaw.

Apparently, it's the same song in Mandarin.
The melody is the same except slower. It was a song written by Cole Porter and used in a 1934 musical of the same name.

Times have changed,
And we've often rewound the clock,
Since the Puritans got a shock,
When they landed on Plymouth Rock.
If today,
Any shock they should try to stem,
'Stead of landing on Plymouth Rock,
Plymouth Rock would land on them.

In olden days a glimpse of stocking
Was looked on as something shocking,
But now, Heaven knows,
Anything Goes.

Good authors too who once knew better words,
Now only use four letter words
Writing prose, Anything Goes.

The world has gone mad today
And good's bad today,
And black's white today,
And day's night today,
When most guys today
That women prize today
Are just silly gigolos
And though I'm not a great romancer
I know that I'm bound to answer
When you propose,
Anything goes

When grandmama whose age is eighty
In night clubs is getting matey with gigolo's,
Anything Goes.

When mothers pack and leave poor father
Because they decide they'd rather be tennis pros,
Anything Goes.

If driving fast cars you like,
If low bars you like,
If old hymns you like,
If bare limbs you like,
If Mae West you like
Or me undressed you like,
Why, nobody will oppose!
When every night,
The set that's smart
Is intruding in nudist parties in studios,
Anything Goes.

The world has gone mad today
And good's bad today,
And black's white today,
And day's night today,
When most guys today
That women prize today
Are just silly gigolos
And though I'm not a great romancer
I know that I'm bound to answer
When you propose,
Anything goes

If saying your prayers you like,
If green pears you like
If old chairs you like,
If back stairs you like,
If love affairs you like
With young bears you like,
Why nobody will oppose!

And though I'm not a great romancer
And though I'm not a great romancer
I know that I'm bound to answer
When you propose,
Anything goes...
Anything goes!

I haven't heard an original recording of Anything Goes, but I do have the English version of the song from the TOD soundtrack. I tried to find it on youtube, though it looks like no one cared enough to upload it... so I did it myself. Enjoy.

By the way, can anyone tell if that's Kate Capshaw singing? I think it is...

Thanks to Raiders112390 and |ZiR| for the great info! (y)

Hmmmm, I think I prefer Kate singing the song in the foreign tongue actually. :)

Yeah that song is particularly racy for its day but not as bad as today's songs but still risque for its day especially lyrics mentioning:

If driving fast cars you like,
If low bars you like,
If old hymns you like,
If bare limbs you like,
If Mae West you like
Or me undressed you like,
Why, nobody will oppose!
When every night,
The set that's smart
Is intruding in nudist parties in studios,
Anything Goes.

Maybe it was a good thing it was put into Asian tongue for this movie.

Actually, that version is sung by Helen Hobson; it's from a 2003 album of rerecordings of music from the first three movies, The Indiana Jones Trilogy, conducted by Nic Raine and performed by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra & Chorus. It was just reissued this month (with a slightly different cover) to capitalize on a certain new movie.

As you see from the tracklistings, "Anything Goes" appears twice on the album, both times using John Williams' arrangement of the song for the original movie / soundtrack (though differing obviously in various details of the performance, recording, etc., like any other new performance). The first version on this album is in Mandarin, as in the movie; the second version (the last track on the album) is a "bonus track" with the original English lyrics, and this is the version in your YouTube vid.
:)

Oh, gosh! Thanks for the information, Crack that whip!

I had a feeling it wasn't Capshaw... it sounded too good. :p
