Yes, saw it in the "theatre," a great old mom and pop that's sadly gone now. Looked remarkably like the first level of Kino der Toten with the dual staircase...also saw Sean Connery's in Darby O'Gill there.

I should have worded it "on the big screen" and not "in theater". In my opinion it counts.

Of course it counts, and perfect addition to the poll.

Not a really big issue: theater vs big screen...as anyone who's here and has will likely point it out anyway.

No i didn't get to see it in the theater , we lived in a small town and with one movie theater and one drive in and both played ''Clash of the titans'' and ''Superman 2'' I didn't get to see it till it came out on HBO or we rented it from the video store. I loved it ,its my all time favorite. Then when doom came out i got out voted at the movie theater by the family to see ghostbusters, I still remember that. Sadly the i only saw Last crusade and Crystal Skull in theaters .

Didn't see it in 1981 - it must have been 1982 (or possibly even early 83?). I had not been long in California and some guy in the office told me about the movie and got me intrigued and it must have been still playing (duh!) so saw it and (naturally) had a great time! So I must have been 29 at the time - if anyone is counting - and old enough to have seen some of the 'Saturday morning serials' at the movies. (We used to call 'em the 'pictures' rather than the 'movies' in the UK.) Great way for parents to get the kids outta the house for a few hours for some quality 'adult time'

According to IMDB, it was released in some Asian countries around late December '81 to late February '82 (Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea). No info on the Philippines, though.

I saw a serial in the early '70s before a "Lassie" movie. It was called "The Iron Claw" and the villain scared the hell out of me. I remember the serial more clearly than the main feature film.

I was 24 and had no preconceptions about the movie or even any prior knowledge of the story.

The best bit for me was the sword fight that didn't happen in the marketplace. The whole audience erupted with spontanous laughter.

It was one of those rare cinematic experiences where you genuinely didn't know what was going to happen next.

Yes, I would have been 9 years old at the time. I went with my father and brother(27 years later we all went to see KOTCS but this time I took my kids). It was also our first betamax rental as well.

This is where I saw it, the night after the premiere. Being raised in the suburbs, it was a lucky chance that I was spending the weekend at my friend's place who had recently moved downtown.

What made my first viewing of "Raiders" extra special was this venue. The prestigious Imperial Theatre is one of Montreal's oldest theatres (100 years old in 2013) and is the only one presently standing that is STILL TO THIS DAY used as a cinema. A couple of years before 1981, it was closed for major renovations and when it finally re-opened, in all of its old-fashioned splendour, guess which film was the 1st to hit the screen? "RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK"! In retrospect, it was quite a momentous occasion.

"Raiders" eventually started playing at other theatres throughout the city but if one wanted to see the film during the opening week or two, the Imperial was the only place. Its interior was/still is gorgeous and 13th June, '81 was my first time inside. Big building for only *1* screen! The Imperial is also where I saw "Temple of Doom" (and "Return of the Jedi" + many others) on opening day.

Originally I found it on a tribute page, but at the time had no use for it. Recently I stumbled upon a fantastic cinema tech forum celebrating Raiders 30th, (should post some of THEIR recollections...some fantastic stories), and one of the members made some revisions to the list. Seemed the right time and place to post it.

Same for me. Though a "Triplex" the additional two screens were a second floor addition, Raiders screened in the original first floor stage. Floor to ceiling burgundy drapes everywhere. Roman columns. Not overly ornate, yet not flat and barren.

Sad to have seen it go. I can never pass that property without thinking of it. Which is often.

I know what you mean. There are A LOT of former theatre locations in Montreal that evoke fond memories. Mutliplexes KILLED these places!
