Disneysea Temple of the Crystal Skull - statue inspiration?

While Temple of the Forbidden Eye definitely seems to have the better backstory and support props (letters, diary entries, etc), I LOVE the work that has been done on creating the look for Temple of the Crystal Skull in Tokyo.

I stumbled across a very interesting "Aztec Idol" print, from Cofre de Perote, drawn in 1880, that looks rather familiar:

So it got me thinking, does anyone know if the huge main statue inside the temple queuing area is based on a real statue (or artwork), or is it Imagineer imagination? This guy:

I believe this would be the image drawn in 1880.

I don't think they did black velvet style back then. Perhaps I am mistaken.

"Black velvet style"? Is there a different image showing up? The image I see is of the idol print, as I said. Even if I log onto another computer and view it. Odd.

But yeah, that is the one I mean.
