Sallah bursting into song...

Whenever Sallah bursts into song in Raiders, it's always a Gilbert & Sullivan.

Do you think it was part of the script, or do you think it was a touch of John Rhys-Davies interpreting 'Sallah bursts into song' written on the script and therefore singing from HMS Pinafore or whatever came into his head?

Gilbert And Sallah-van

I would love the (arabic?) ark-digging song lyrics from Raiders. "Just a Gigolo" was playing in Elsa's room apparently; I know how that one goes. But this was a pleasant surprise...
----------
(from HMS Pimafore, 1878)
SIR JOSEPH: I am the monarch of the sea,
The ruler of the Queen's Navee,
Whose praise Great Britain loudly chants.
COUSIN HEBE. And we are his sisters, and his cousins, and his aunts!
REL. And we are his sisters, and his cousins, and his aunts!
SIR JOSEPH. When at anchor here I ride,
My bosom swells with pride,
And I snap my fingers at a foeman's taunts;
COUSIN HEBE. And so do his sisters, and his cousins, and his aunts!
ALL. And so do his sisters, and his cousins, and his aunts!
SIR JOSEPH. But when the breezes blow,
I generally go below,
And seek the seclusion that a cabin grants;
COUSIN HEBE. And so do his sisters, and his cousins, and his aunts!
ALL. And so do his sisters, and his cousins, and his aunts!
His sisters and his cousins, Whom he reckons up by dozens, And his aunts!

Sallah sang another number from HMS Pinafore. Maybe he performed in Cairo's dinner theatre.

A British tar is a soaring soul
As free as a mountain bird
His energetic fist should be ready to resist
A dictatorial word
His nose should pant and his lip should curl
His cheeks should flame and his brow should furl
His bosom should heave and his heart should glow
And his fist be ever ready for a knock-down blow

His eyes should flash with an inborn fire
His brow with scorn be wrung
He never should bow down to a domineering frown
Or the tang of a tyrant tongue
His foot should stamp and his throat should growl
His hair should curl and his face should scowl
His eyes should flash and his breast protrude
And this should be his customary attitude

Yeah, I thought that was a interesting choice of song, considering what happens later in that scene! Is that what you think Spielburg was implying about Indy?

Another song in LC: "You're a Sweet Little Headache." I don't know when it was playing in the movie. Perhaps it was the song being played on the piano on the zepplin? Anyone know?

LOL! Sounds just like our Indy, doesn't it! :D

It's possible Just a Gigilo was on the blimp, and Sweet Little Headache played in Elsa's room. The lyrics fit better. They shoulda featured David Lee Roth as a pianist or gondolier!

(From the film "Paris Honeymoon," 1939)
You're a sweet little headache
But you are lots of fun
I've a good mind to spank you
Then thank you for all you've done
You're a sweet little headache
Full of quaint little schemes
But when I should forget you
I let you disturb my dreams
I thought I could hold my own with you
But you've got me all perplexed
For here am I alone with you
What are you going to do next?
You're a sweet little headache
If you keep on that way
But a sweet little heartache
You'll turn out to be some day

Hey, I like Sallah and all but his songs are not nearly as classy and Quint's

Show me the way to go home
I'm tired and I want to go to bed
I had a little drink about an hour ago
And it went right to my head.

Quint had a few other numbers you will recall from Jaws. I think he was a lyrical genius.

Why Weren't Sallah's songs on the soundtrack

I think the songs Sallah sang in Raiders should have been put on the soundtrack. Let's be honest...if you've seen the movies a signifigant amount of times you alway's can't help but sing along:

-"I am the monarch of the sea,
The ruler of the Queen's Navee...."

-"A British tar is a soaring soul,
As free as a mountain bird,
His energetic fist should be ready to resist
A dictatorial word"

They had Anything Goes on the ToD soundtrack, did they pay to Cole Porter for it?

Well, let's see.... because "Anything Goes" is a big music number in the trilogy and is sung whole way through and has dancers and full orchestra and everything...
