What would you change about KOTCS

You may have liked the movie. But you may have dreaded a few scenes. If you could.....what changes would you make to the film. What would you add and what would you take away????? We will then send the responses to Mr Lucas.

Good question! OK - here's a start:

1) No crap gophers ;
2) Change the rubbish and corny first 'molehill' scene ;
3) Have an interesting opening introductory scene instead of having some American teenagers we don't know or care about ;
4) Drop Shia's Tarzan thing. Excruciating ;
5) Maybe do another draft of the script altogether -there was no witty dialogue at all, no drama.....
6) Get someone else to do the soundtrack. John Williams was a genius, but he's old now and KOTCS was, I dunno.... I didn't even notice its soundtrack! Bland and unforgivable.
7) The ending - the family all live happily ever after - is cheesy nonsense. I always preferred Indy as more of a romantic loner.

My version of KOTCS...

Hmmmm....let's see....I'll do a summary of each scene.

Paramount logo fades into a triangular "mountain shaped" piece of broken pottery lying on the ground. Mac bends down and dusts it off with an archaelogical brush tool and gets excited at the find. He yells to someone off screen...Indy's silhoutte/shadow is seen from outside a tent. By the time Indy gets outside the tent, Mac is missing. Someone comes from behind the tent (Indy not seeing him) and pistol whips Indy unconscious.

Original opening credits scene with students and US Army vehicles. Introduction of Irina Spalko leads to opening of Hangar 51. Russians are looking for the Ark of the Covanent and think Indy knows how to use its powers (since he and Marion were the only ones to not die). Indy, not knowing where it went after Raiders, is torn at the idea of finding the Ark. He's excited to know it's there and wants to see it after all these years, but he doesn't want Spalko and the Russians to find it. Dovchenko and a few guards kidnap one of the US soldiers watching over the warehouse and force him to hand over a catalog/map of all the crates. The location of the Ark is torn/worn off, but the group do find out that a metallic box is located near the Ark. So Indy gets the Russians (just 3 soldiers...nowhere near as many as in KOTCS) to use ALL their gunpowder/bullets to find the metallic box, this way limiting their search for the Ark. After finding the Ark crate (just before opening the Ark...drag this scene out since we know what happens when the Ark is opened), Indy and Mac are being held at gunpoint (Russians not knowing that all their ammunition was used by Indy). The Russians guards are watching Spalko just about to open the Ark, and Indy uses the distraction to punch the nearest guard, getting his whip back. Indy then turns and runs around some crates and climbs up them. The Russians try to fire, but now realize their guns are empty. Spalko has the guards load the Ark in the back of a jeep...and throw Mac in the back of one of the vehicles. Spako and Dovchenko get in the jeep and begin to escape. Indy swings toward Spalko's jeep, but misses and lands on the top of the vehicle with Mac tied in the back. The Russians driving the vehicle are not aware that Indy is on the roof, and jump when they see Indy running down the windshield and jumping onto the back of Spalko's jeep. Indy throws Spalko out before Dovchenko realizes Indy is there and crashes through some crates (which shows the metallic box being opening and part of an alien body is shown). Dovchenko and Indy fight for the controls of the jeep and aren't paying attention that the other vehicle is coming straight at them. Mac is yelling at the guards that "you don't know him!" but they don't understand English. Right before impact Indy yells for Mac to close his eyes...confused Mac does. Spalko and Dovchenko hear Indy's yell also and listen. The impact causes the Ark lid to fly off...releasing the ghosts and killing the guards driving the vehicle with Mac. After the ghosts return and the Ark is covered again, Spalko jumps into the still drivable vehicle with Mac still tied in the back (eyes still shut...scared as hell). Just before leaving the warehouse, Spalko eyes a button that self-destructs the warehouse incase of an attack. Pushing the button, the warehouse begins a countdown (starting with one minute). Indy and Dovchenko are fighting when Indy sees one of the destroyed crates has a rocket sled inside. Indy and Dovchenko just make it to the rocket sled as the timer reaches 0. The rocket sled takes off through the desert...passing Spalko's vehicle and leaving it in it's dust. The rocket sled comes to a stop in the desert with Dovchenko unconcious...Indy walks off into the desert.

Transition to Indy back at college...when the dean comes in to talk to Indy. Indy still gets fired for helping the Russians find the Ark. Indy decides to head for Chicago to visit his father by train after a tough year of losing his best friend Marcus. The day that Indy is to leave, Mutt goes to the college to find Indy, but finds out that he is taking a train to Chicago. Just as the train is about to pull out, Mutt makes it to the train and rides his motorcycle up a ramp into one of the train cabins. During the ride to New York, Mutt talks about his mother being kidnapped by Russians to find some ancient crystal skull. Mutt also shows Indy a map in a strange language that he doesn't understand.

Once in Chicago, Indy and Mutt head for Henry Sr.'s to use his library to translate the map. It seems that part of the map is in Mayan and part is in a language not ever seen before. The Mayan translation points to the crystal skull being hidden in a cemetary in Nazca...and Indy and Mutt head off in a plane for Peru.

Indy and Mutt split up and search the cemetary for a hidden chamber. Before splitting Indy tells Mutt that if he finds something, don't touch it until he gets there. After searching for a while, Mutt finds a lever...yells to Indy to come see, and pulls it before Indy gets there. The lever opens the ground below Mutt's feet...dropping him into a cave below the cemetary. When Indy gets to where Mutt called for him, Mutt is missing. Indy gets mad and yells something about people never listening to him! Indy finds the lever, pulls it, and drops beside Mutt into the cave. "I said DON'T touch anyhing!" Indy and Mutt make their way through the cave (filled with traps and creepy crawlies) before coming to a larger room with 7 coffins (Orellana and his men). The coffin with Orellana supposedly guards the crystal skull, while the other coffins hold traps of some sort for chosing the wrong coffin. There are engravings in the walls that allow Indy to translate the "alien" language on Mutt's map that helps to chose the correct coffin. But Indy translates wrong, causing the floor of the room to begin to slowly collapse...putting a rush on things. Indy finally picks the correct coffin and finds the skull, just as the floor gives way and Mutt begins to fall. Indy grabs Mutt's hand with his whip at the last second and pulls him up.

Part 2...sorry for the double post...10000 max characters exceeded...

Making their way out of the cemetary, Indy and Mutt come face to face with some Russian soldiers. Mutt is able to escape and get to his motorcycle...and comes back to get Indy. Indy jumps on the back, and a chase pursues through the countryside of Peru...heading for the city. Insert various stunts and chases through the market streets of Peru...ending in Indy and Mutt being captured by the Russians and taken to a campsite in the jungle.

Indy is being held in one of the tents in the campsite...when Mac is brought to him by some of the guards. Indy is excited to see he's still alive, but Mac is angry at him for leaving him back at the warehouse. Indy mentions to Mac about translating the alien text that tells of a hidden city in the jungle...but to keep quiet about it (not wanting the Russians to find out). Mac is led out of the tent, and a little later Spako enters and asks about the lost city. It seems Mac is now playing for the other side (Indy promises him that he'll break his nose), and that if Indy doesn't help find the city, she is going to kill Mutt's mother...who Indy then finds out is Marion.

Indy, Marion, and Mutt are tied in the back of a vehicle, allowing Indy and Marion to reminisce (fight and bicker) about old times. Mutt eventually uses his knife to get free...and unties Indy and Marion. Indy takes over the vehicle (which we actually see him doing...not like in KOTCS) and begins to head for Spako's (with Mac) vehicle to get back the skull. Out of nowhere, the jungle cutter (driven by Dovchenko) rams into the side of Indy's vehicle...destroying the back of the truck into pieces. Dovchenko is just about to use one of the blades of the jungle cutter to chop Indy and crew, but Indy whips the arm of the blade, deflecting it and causing it to fly off into one of the Russian soldiers vehicles (screams can be heard). Indy climbs up the jungle cutter and begins fighting Dovchenko on the moving vehicle. Dovchenko eventually gets killed by the blade of the jungle cutter, and Marion and Mutt pick up Indy in the vehicle that was sliced open by the flying blade before. Chasing after Spalko, Marion pulls up to Spako's vehicle and Mutt jumps onto the back. Mutt distracts Spako (swordfight) as Indy punches Mac (in the nose as promised) and steals the skull. Indy and Mutt make their way back to Marion's vehicle before the vehicle enters the river...leaving Spalko and Mac on the shore behind.

Indy and co. slowing make their way through the steamy and winding river...the steam so thick, it's hard to see far ahead. The amphibious vehicle passes below some low hanging branches of a tree, and Indy comes face to face with a huge tree snake. Indy freaks out and screams. Mutt finds it humorous and begins talking about how Marion would talk about his dad screaming like a girl around snakes (not putting two and two together that Indy is his father). Marion and Indy continue to bicker about the past, as Mutt realizes they are about to go over a waterfall. Indy and Marion continue to ignore Mutt, yelling back and forth...as Mutt finally gets their attention right before going over the falls.

The three are tossed from the vehicle into the water below...after coming to the surface, Mutt feels a fish brush his leg below the water. Mutt freaks out (he has a fear of sharks and thinks its a shark)...Indy convinces him that it's ridiculous to think that sharks would live in a river in Peru...when he notices that the fish are actually man eating Pirranahs. The group begins swimming for their lives to the shore...making it out with just a few bites and scrapes.

Indy continues to use the map to find the lost city, and they finally find it hidden deep in the jungle. The entrance to the city is actually a tunnel that goes deep into the ground...hidden by foilage. Indy, Marion, and Mutt enter the tunnel towards the lost city. On the tunnel walls are paintings and carvings showing alien beings teaching a tribe about farming, irrigations, etc. as in KOTCS.

The hidden city is actually underground (hence the HIDDEN part of the city and why it was never found before). Indy, Marion, & Mutt make it to the alter room where the skull must be placed on the body. Indy begins telling that the one who places the skull will gain knowledge of the universe...of everything. Just as Indy is about to place the skull, Spalko enters the chamber with Mac and points a gun at Marion. Indy hands over the skull to Spalko, and she places the skull on the body. Immediately the room begins to regain it's look...going from an old ruined temple to a golden room filled with ancient (and alien) technology. The skull begins transmitting knowledge into Spalko's eyes...Mac focuses his attention on all the golden items around the chamber as Marion and Mutt leave the room. Indy is trying to convince Mac to leave with them, but Mac refuses to until he has all that he wants. The ceiling of the chamber begins to fall away, and the chamber itself begins to shake and rumble (as if starting up a vehicle). Spalko is frozen in the middle of the room, with "strands" of knowledge still entering her eyes through the eyes of the skull...the strands come to an end, Spalko now has endless knowledge and begins yelling to Indy that she can see everything. Then shock goes over her, as she sees how she will die...and that it happens in the very room that she is standing...and she keeps having visions of her head exploding because of the amount of knowledge. Now she's frozen in fear...knowing that she is going to die soon.

Indy reaches for Mac to pull him out of the chamber as the chamber begins to lift out of the ground. Indy begins to get sucked to the ceiling of the room, but because of his gold filled pockets, Mac is still on the ground. Mac finally has a change of heart and reaches for Indy's whip...grabbing it just before Indy takes off towards the ceiling. Now Indy is hanging in the air, with Mac being held down by the weight of the gold. Indy begins "climbing" down the whip towards the exit of the chamber and makes it out just as the chamber lifts off the ground and heads into the sky, Mac still inside.

With the ancient spaceship lifting into the sky, Spalko finally awakes from her frozen state, to see the crystal skeleton staring back at her. A slight movement from the skeleton happens (just enough to show the skeleton as being alien) as Spalko's head explodes.

Indy, Mutt, and Marion watch as the spaceship disappears into the air and water enters the basin where the spaceship layed dormant for years..."like a broom to the footprints."

Transition to Indy being awarded at the university and being named Associate Dean of the college. Mutt (holding Indy's fedora) and Marion come up to Indy and talk about Indy settling down and becoming a family man. Indy replies about not planning that far ahead, but you never know. Marion and Indy begin to walk away...zoom into Mutt looking at Indy's fedora and just about to put it on...as Indy's hand comes into screen and takes it away. Final shot as Indy and Marion walk across the campus grounds...with Mutt behind them.

That would be the best change possible. Most of what stank about Skull arose from the script. Tens years work...for that?

Intro was fine really, but here we go anyway:

Either make Spalko read Indy's mind or don't do it at all. As soon as Indy drops the gun, he should have ran. When he gets in Spalko's jeep, he should have socked her in the face. "BUT SHES A GIRL!", well that didn't stop Indy from knocking out that woman in Temple of Doom intro, and she wasn't even a bad guy! On the Rocket Sled, the fight should have kept going, keep up the intensity. Maybe have Indy almost fall off the sled, but regain his balance. At the end, they both get jolted off, and Indy runs away before the big Russian dude gets up.

I'm quite fine with the fridge section actually.

Get rid of the interrogation scene. Have a FBI agent show up with the dean to Indy's class. Take out that "my friend" part of the script, it was so forced. Diner scene is classic, wouldn't change much except the "Look like your brought a knife*pause 3 seconds, pan camera up* to a gun fight" another example of forced dialogue. WTF @ Marcus statue thing, insert some more dynamic action/escaping instead of another Marcus joke.

Find some way to pass up the whole prison scene. Its just pointless exposition. At the graveyard, make the fight with the warriors longer. Have Indy use his whip and ACTUALLY FIRE HIS GUN. The graveyard itself should be full of booby traps like the Raiders intro. When Indy/Mutt are captured, bring the bike too.

At the camp, don't reveal the alien yet. Let there still be some mystery to it. Indy/Marion should have a longer period of time to get to know each other again and sell the marriage more.

DON'T destroy the Jungle Cutter. Instead have Shia drive the jeep instead of Indy, and have Indy on top of the Jungle Cutter, which will be the new dynamic action set piece like the Last Crusade Tank and the Raiders Truck. Battling Russians with fists/gun, dodging shots from other jeeps, hanging on from the side, almost falling into the blades, throwing a Russian into blades, and before the cliff, have Indy swing with his whip away into Spalko's jeep. Mutt can still do the swordfight and Indy can have more to do then just drive.

Indy was the one that swung into Spalko, so there is a little confrontation as they exit the vehicle from the ants. Thats when the fight with the big Russian starts like normal. After that, have Marion/Indy/Mutt/Ox drive off the cliff(notice how I didn't mention Mac) instead of the rubber tree. Then, go down one giant waterfall. Everywhere makes it to shore, but Ox is found dead. Insert actual acting from Shia/Marion/Indy over his lost and prove there is an actual sense of danger in this movie.

Inside the Kingdom...I still haven't thought how the Mayans can be integrated better, but they gotta do SOMETHING instead of magically appear and then chase them for 10 seconds, and then apparently get killed off. Instead of taking out the blocks, have letters on them and Indy and co have to solve a riddle. At the end of the staircase, have a platform they have to reach instead of falling to the ground like it was nothing. Marion would have to jump and Indy grabs her arm the whip. Insert more "ZOMG I realize how much I love you" dialogue here and have Mutt roll his eyes and walk off "C'mon mom!" or some other similar remark. The alien can finally be revilied at the end, but don't make his face come so close. Hide him back a bit in the shadows. Indy/Marion/Mutt escape should be more exciting. Have the place start falling apart, leaping across gaps, dodging rocks, have the giant gears go faster so they have to run to get out.

The wedding thing is fine, but maybe have some more people show up. Indy has gone on lots of adventures, so I'm sure he has plenty of friends.

And thats it. I really like the movie, but with these changes I think I probably would have LOVED it. Lets hope a more passionate Spielberg can make Indy 5 better >_>

If any of the ideas listed above would have been used, the movie would have been much better. Especially the ideas about a real adventure movie instead of the 'Jungle Cruise' ride.

How did they miss the boat with this one?

What changes would I make to the film?

1) There is a man with a hat and a Bullwhip in this mowie - this guy looks like Indy but he is not Indy. First of all this movie needs an Indiana Jones.

2) No Soap-BS! Indy has a son? *LOL* A marriage? *LOL*

3) REAL Stunts! This was always the deal! I always here "Well, it's not SUPPOSED to be 100% REALISTIC." and "There were implausible scenes in the first movie too!" These are the folks that just don't GET IT. There's a BIG difference between a giant rolling boulder coming down on Indy and a kid dressed like Fonzie swinging through the jungle like Tarzan with help from his little forest monkeys... *LOL*

4) Living Aliens? *LOL* This is to far away... even for an Indiana Jones-Movie.

Most of the people think that "Skull" is the worst of the Indy-Movies. Now you know why...

I agree. I was (and still am) obsessed with the first three films, and went to see KOTCS opening day. I absolutely hated it. My family and friends couldn't believe it. The second I read that there was a possibly "alien" plotline, I prayed that it was just false rumors. It felt less like a true Indiana Jones film and more like X-files on safari. I could tolerate a few of the unrealistic stunts, although the whole vine swinging thing was unforivable, but the aliens and spaceship drove me over the edge. I would have rather had to wait several more years for a new film, or even not have one at all, than have had KOTCS be produced.

WOW!! See here is the point. KOTCS is NOT our movie to change!! Get past it, The movie was GREAT!! If you can't get past that Indy is not in the same time frame as before then that's your problem and true Ignorance of how different the 50's were compared to the 30's.

Why does everyone here ( especially the newbies ) want to keep dragging indy down the same old road that the original trilogy took him on? After facing GOD, Aliens were not only plausable but they were NATURAL!!

Thank God they didn't do a TRUE Atlantis movie...The true Thories of Atlantis pre-dating Egypt and the cental American cultures would have made you pitiful people explode!

Stop trying to make a movie that NOBODY asked you to make. None of your ideas are any better..YOU just think they are!

Well, I'm sure glad you have all the BELIEVABLE first 3 movies to keep watching :( When all you are doing is exploring the same un-realistic setting for a fictional Character that KOTCS gave us.

Imagine if Last Crusade had been released this year. Once pics of that Berlin set had been leaked, think about how excited fans would've been: "Indy's going to go into the heart of Nazi Germany?!!! This is going to be so badass!!!"

Now imagine how fans would've reacted to the actual scene: "WTF?! Indy's only there for about 2 minutes? What a ****ing waste of story potential!!! And he just grabs a book and has a jokey run-in with Hitler?! This isn't Indiana Jones, it's something out of a Bugs Bunny cartoon!!!"

The Indy films were just not designed for this level of scrutiny.

(And thank God for that.)

No you are right, I said that. In May. Back when I was still high on "Oh my God we've got a new Indy film but it wasn't that good... but I refuse to admit that just yet..."

What I meant was, more than anything, that I was getting used to all of it's flaws.

In an earlier post I even basically admit that the movie isn't as good but I was being nice about it:

It was a different flavor. It wasn't bad but it definitely wasn't as good as the old ones. And it's just a case of it having flaws, not expectations IMO.

And I still don't think it was awful. It wasn't good either. It's exactly as I've been naming it lately, mediocre. But all the problems I have with it now are the same as what I had with it then. If you read my posts from back then I mention how I didn't like the CGI ants or the Tarzan scene, etc. I was just being more optimistic because I love Indy and at the time it was supposed to be a celebration of the new movie and a lot of people were hating on it.

I even said recently I'd consider going to see it again before it left theaters. You guys seem to think I hate the movie when I just hate that it didn't turn out as good as the others. And I'm calling it out on why.

The comment I just made about the rocketsled, is essentially saying that I liked EVERYTHING the movie did up to that point but I disagree with a lot of what it does after. Guess what. I don't hate the gopher hole intro like a lot of people. CGI gopher or not, it didn't seem stupid to me but kind of funny.

I don't think you hate it at all... it's just your comments appear to be a little confused. You shouldn't feel that you have to like a movie because you want to.

Personally - I don't think a movie has to be "great" to be validated. There is one great Indy movie and that is 'Raiders'. The other 3 are lesser movies and distilled variations on a theme... but that doesn't mean I don't think they are entertaining and enjoyable.
