Irina Spalko: A Threatening Villain?

One of my favorite scenes in the movie is when she has Indy staring at the Skull and she's outlining the Sovietss plan to use the Skull to get into minds of Americans and turn their thought into their own. That closeup shot of her with eyes looking crazy. That was Cate Blanchett'ss best scene in the movie IMO. I thought that was very threatening. To me, that's a much more insidious plan and different than the how Nazis using the power of the Ark. and actually kind of connects the object with the Communist ideology which I thought was cool.

That was a superb shot (and better yet, one that looked like it was ripped right out of a comic book), but she still lacked a scene where she did something evil in a direct way. Mola Ram had his "Kali Ma will rule the world" speech, but he also had the moments I wrote about above.

It really felt frustratingly like the script thought it was good enough to give us a caricature of an evil villain, and let us fill in the blanks - lazy. She's simply a poorly written character. I don't even want to think about what it would have been like if not for Blanchett.

I think it's largely a trade-off. Spalko wasn't as evil as Mola Ram, but her big plan was a lot more clearly defined. It made as much sense as the nazis wanting the Ark, and was exactly the type of psychic advantage the USSR was attempting to gain in the 50s.

But Mola just had a bunch of kids digging for some rocks, that he somehow planned to use to topple all the major religions. I'm still not clear on how he expected to do this, and I suspect neither was Mola himself.

Too true. The arm of the "Black Sleep of Kali" has a long reach... ;)

Yeah Spalko and the other Russians were nothing like the Communists you see on T.V.

Spalko did...nothing.

And please tell me what the point of even hinting at the ESP thing was? It's like all these ideas where thrown out there then never developed.

I thought trying to shoot Marion with a machine gun while hanging on to the front of a moving jeep was pretty hardcore.

Shooting at her is admirable. Missing her is unforgivable.

It helped set up that the Russians were interested in the skull for use as a psychic weapon. Did Spalko really have ESP, or did she just think she did? I think that's probably open to debate.

The Russians also believed they had that kind of edge back in the 50s, but it didn't really get them anywhere.
