Durante definitely chewed the scenery out of that "bucket kicking" scene, but there's pretty good reason to believe his and Keaton's roles were meant to be switched, with Tracy's old sailor friend "Jimmy" being Durante and the silent, perpetually non-smiling comedian being the one who sets it all in motion.
