Your ideal Indy IV

I thought it would be an interesting exercise if we wrote about our 'dream' (for want of a better word) Indy IV. Relatively briefly, and without too much criticism, and within the criteria of it being set in the 50's etc.....

Heres mine: Indiana Jones and the Curse of the Gods
Artifact: Atlantis and the discovery of the philsophers stone
Returning Characters: Henry, Sallah
Year: 1949 (before Soviet A bomb test)
Locations: USA, Greece, Indonesia
Brief synopsis: In 1945 Indy had been instrumental in stopping Nazis getting their hands on x artifact, but the clues to it had been taken by advancing soviet troops, and in stopping them Marcus was killed.
In 1949 Indy has fallen on hard times, he has lost his job and has a drink problem blaming himself for the murder of Marcus.
He is then approached by the American authorities who tell him that the Soviets are working with an ex-nazi scientist who knows that the Philosophers stone is located in the lost continent of Atlantis, and that the philosophers stone could be used by the soviets to get as much uranium for a bomb as they wanted....
What follows is a classic adventure in which Indy really doesnt know who to trust, the americans are suspicious of this maverick and suspect him of communist links and after Indys recovery of the clue to the wereabouts of Atlantis the general acting on his own agenda tries to arrest him and Indy must stop either the Soviets, the Nazis or the Americans from getting their hands on the philosophers stone...
The movie concludes with the death of Henry and Indy walking off into the desert sunset alone]

But enough of me what about you.....

In my ideal Indy 4 I would like to see ti take place some time before 1950 mid to late 40s. I cant begen to imagine what the relic will be, but I would love to see an intro like this.
Somewere in Asia 1948. We see the siloette of a man standing in an old frogotten teple. Directly in front of him is the idol.{you know the one from the begining of Raiders} Its maybe 20 or 30 feet from the man. He starts to move forwerd a few feet but does not see the trip wire thats ankle high. When the man trips the wire, we hear the chimes of bells. Slowly the entrence of the temple begins to close. the man snatches the idol and dashes to the door. Realizing he has more than enough time to escape, he decides to ga back for the gold coins that wee on top of the altar with the Idol. When he grabbs a handful of coins a trap door opens and he falls to the floor below. Where he finds himself facing the barrel of a gun. Slowly camera pans up the man we see khaki pants..camera moves to mans beltline, hanging from left belt loop is a sling shot. Camera pans to show mans safari shirt, leather jacket + sachel....but whats this?? No fedora? A NY Yankees baseball cap?! Thats right! Shorty's all grown up. {scene 2} Marshall College Indy in his office going through his mail sees package from Shang High Indy opens package to find NY Yankees hat covered in blood. Indy "Here we go again."

Am I sensing some hostilities against a certain character here, Web? Or is that sheer plot device?

;)
Of course, Indy would rescue him!! If ya ask Webley, ShortRounds the best thing to come out of this trilogy. It would be blasphemy if Spielberg + Lucas didn't put Short Round in the next flick! Short Round is a great character, + I don't understand why nobody likes him. If only 1 movie of the trilogy could have been made, it would have + should have beed TOD! I've heard some talk of "what if Indy had a kid" to carry on the tradition + make the Indy movies/books/ect. + go for many years to come. But he's already got a proteg'e , and we all know him well........

Self grandiosity

Many many moons ago, during the height of the zucker/abrams parodies, I thought about the same concept for Raiders: a slap-stick comedy of the serial/adventure movies of yesteryear. It involved a three stooges type chase of cat and mouse with the artifact in question, complete with a ton of slapstick. Slowly that idea evolved into a psudeo-screenplay about putting the ark back into the hand of God. (there are threads here that discuss said concept).

For me, I really would like for Indy for Indy to find the Ark again, (buried in the warehouse) and return it to God. It bookends the saga, doesn't take away from the proper ending in Last Crusade and visits the character we first came to love in Raiders (before he was sanitized).

For me, anything else is just an unnecessary chapter in a novel that is starting to become too long.

We are dealing with plots more than anything here, and people will have different ideas it is not a matter of it living upto peoples expectations really.

I really don't want a sad Indy movie. It just doesn't fit, to me. Indy movies are supposed to be fun, not sad!

As for your other points:

Funny... absolutely.

Adventurous... without a doubt.

Dark... well, to a degree. If we're talking about Indy exploring dark, ominous places, then that's fine. If we're talking "dark" in the sense of Indy being in drug rehab and on the verge of suicide, then no.

I guess, for me, the point in an Indy film is to have fun and a bit of escapism. I don't want to be crying, nor do I want to find it disturbing. I want that same giddy excitement that came from scenes like the jeep chase in Raiders, the mine car in Temple of Doom, and the tank sequence in Last Crusade; the adventures that are so ridiculously over the top, you can't help but laugh, and yet you're still at the edge of your seat waiting to see how it all works out. To me, those types of scenes define the Indy franchise far more than any dark or depressing scenes.

I've said this before... but I want there to be something so tough and hard for Jones to get out of. I want it as dark and as desprate as we've ever seen it.

Then, in a moment of enlightenment... this is the chanenge he's been prepairing for all of his life. It's the crown jewel of his acchevement. Then as he goes for it, he gets another set back...

... only to realize that's part of the game. Only an act of total desperation can save him and the quest.

Well, yes, kind of like on the rope bridge in Temple of Doom. That was one of those scenes where I remember thinking, "How the hell does he get out of this one?" And then the way he gets out makes for a spectacular scene and is, as you said, an act of desperation (let's face it, that could have gone horribly wrong!) I guess I just wouldn't consider it "dark," (actually, I remember laughing when he cut the bridge because it was so over-the-top.) So maybe the terminology is where we differ, more than the idea itself.

I would like to see what Jones could have done after a cave in or after a tomb sealed his fate "forever".

I had to laugh... I just had this image of a really cheesy, cliche ending to Indy 4. There's a cave-in, and he gets sealed in a tomb or something. His friends hold a memorial service for him, assuming he's dead. Then, in the very last scene, we see the ground around the cave-in site, and suddenly a hand pushes up through it, holding a fedora. "Raider's March" begins playing, and we the words "The End" appear on the screen. After a brief pause, a "?" is added.

(I know that's not what you were suggesting, but it just popped into my mind.)

will try

Very nice idea and a nice story, bob.

Since Atlantis is already "in use" , which would have been my first choice, i'll try something a little different i had in mind for some time...

Title:: Indiana Jones and the Decay of Force
Artifact: Electric device (also known as Baghdad Battery), Sunken City

Returning Characters: Sallah
Year: 1937/1949
Locations: USA, Greece,
(not so) Brief synopsis: Baghdad, 1937. A person, unknow to the audience, finds something not too far away from Baghdad. The person walks away, but we manage to get a look at the object. It seems to be very old.
Leap in time and space: Germany, 1941. We recognize the unknwon person, sitting on a desk, barely lighted by a spotlight. He's meticulously desribing the ancient device by writing down informations to a book. The device seem to be some sort of energy supply. Alarm siren. The sound of bomb detonations will interrupt his work.

Leap in time: 1949, four years after WW2. Indiana Jones strolls throug the house of Marcus Brody who will sadly never come back. We (the audience) do not know what happened and we won't find out in the entire movie. (Left open) As for Indy, he wants to find something memorable before the house will be finally sold. Suddenly the Doorbell. Postman. A letter for Marcus Brody.
Content of lettet: Mr, Brody, Allies found corresponcence sent from German archeological museum to museum in Italy. Correspondence was lost on its way because of WW2. Content of correspondece: Description of 2000 years old battery; was found in Baghdad. Because of loss of correspondence, "publication" of discovery of ancient device twelve years dealyed. Blueprints of device attached. Please evaluate authenticity of artifact and respond. Originator: Government of the United States.

No-brainer for indy. A job, like a tribute to his old friend. He´s taking over.
Here, the movie really begins. But he does not not make the same mistake twice. Not again the government. He will search on his own. Following, Indy gets hold of the original battery in Italy and finds out that there is something bigger behind that single "electric" device. Something like lightning... fire... the power of God? Maybe. But he´s not the only one interested in this "thing", which may promise endless energy reserves to the one who discovers the secret first. The Soviets are on it, and of course, one step ahead. Now, he stands between the government and the Soviets, but he needs someone to trust and a missing piece in the puzzle. The device was found in Baghdad, but his old friend, the best digger in Egypt, knows the leader of excavation at that time. An energy delivering device, for use in a war which has just begun...

He will find the remains of a highly developed culture and, at the same time, finds out that the inhabitants had a high price to pay for all those advancements in technology. But, some of it is only buried, not completely destroyed.

Film ends with something like: (backlight, only silhouettes visible. standing on line of horizon. Like digging sequence in ROTLA)
Sallah: But Indy, what will happen with it?
Indy: I Dunno
Sallah: I'm afraid, they still can abuse it, in case they recover it.
Indy: I'm going to find out.
(walks off screen, leaving sallah alone. fade black. march)

Hm. I´m a bit disappointet that i did not managed to inlcude Henry in a way that does not seems to be far-fetched. Thought might be best to leave him out completetly. Raiders style. :D

Didn't they try that with Belloq locking him in the well of souls?

Good point. Odd how we forgot one of the biggest scenes in Raiders!

Escaping a collapsing Shangri-La (They landed by plane at shangri-la, and now they must flee)

Indy and friends make a break for it as an army of Mad Monks chase them through the collapsing temple. The Statue of a Warrior stands guard by the window, below is steep slope down the snowy Himalayan mountainside.

"This way" shouts Indy, prying the tall metal shield from the marble hands of the stone warrior monk. Rock supports crumble from the ceiling nearly crushing princess Whoever. Sallah reaches out and pulls her to safety as the huge stone block crashes to the floor. Indy turns to Sallah, "stop messin around" he shouts. "Sorry Indy" Sallah shouts back.

At the window Indy and Sallah lift the metal shield and teter it over the edge. Princess whoever looks out into the white snowy landscape and realizes what is about to happen. Behind them the Mad Monks charge down the corridor. "Oh ****" says Indy. Princess looks at Indy, "No way, buster, if you think for a second that I'm gonna--"
Suddenly the weight shifts in the metal shield and it spills over the window ledge and crashes into the snow mound below. Instantly it begins to slide down the mountain. Indy grabs the princess and pushes Sallah over the edge. The three heroe's fall into the soft snow. Indy and Sallah push through toward the sliding shield. Princess follows looking up at the height they just fell from. Above, the Monks arrive at the window ledge, their leader, Shiza Kahn yells in a foreign language. The monks all reach into their robes and remove bone horns. They blow into their horns sending a deep penetrating note into the mountains.

Indy and Sallah reach the shield and climb on, the shield gaining speed as they go. The princess runs behind reaching toward Indy. "Innnddyyyyyy!!!!" she yells stretching as far as she can just missing his outstretched hand by millimetres. "Reach out, hurry!!" Indy yells, just as their hands lock. Indy throws her onto the sheild, she tumbles over onto her back and sighs. Indy starts to chuckle when he suddenly becomes aware of a low rumble off in the distance. Indy turns toward the sound and bears witness to the one thing that could destroy them all...

"AVALANCHE!!"

"What?" yells the princess. Indy climbs to the front of the shield and taps Sallah on the shoulder, "Yes Indy?"

"Slide faster." is all Indy says as he points to the rolling wall of snow and ice that races toward them. "Yes Indy."

The shield begins to slide faster as its three riders lean forward, putting their weight to the front. Behind them Shiza Kahn races down the mountain slope yelling. In the distance the Temple crumbles into a huge cloud of black dust and smoke.

"Oh great." says the princess, watching the Warrior Monk approach with gaining speed. Almost immediately he is neck and neck with Indys shield.

Shiza shifts his weight sending his speeding shield toward Indys. Indy braces himself and just before the shields collide he jumps over to Shizas. The sudden weight slows Shizas shield enough to miss Sallah and the princess.

Sallah looks up to see the plane ahead wedged in the ice and snow. He grabs the Princess by the scruff and says, "Excuse me, Princess" and throws her over the side, then Sallah jumps. They tumble down toward the plane and slow to a stop. Sallah jumps to his feet climbs into the plane.

"Hey buster, you're not leaving without me." the princess climbs in after him. Sallah tries the engines, but the plane wont turn over. He looks out the door and sees the plane pontoon is sealed in solid ice.

Indy and Shiza fight as the shield races at top speed down the mountain slope. Shiza blocks Indys punch and counters with his own. The powerful hit throws indy down. Dazed, Indy looks up to see Shiza bracing for his next hit. Indy kicks out with both legs. Shiza flys off of the shield and disappears into the snow. Indy gets up to see Shiza disappear.

In the distance, the avalanche is gaining. Suddenly the shield slams into the plane, shattering the frozen encasing.

From inside the cockpit Sallah shouts "Good Indy!!" The plane begins sliding down the slope. The engines still wont turn over, Sallah keeps trying. "Come on, come on." shouts the princess, "I'm trying Princess" Sallah says.

Outside Indy climbs to his feet, shakes off the snow and heads toward the sliding plane.

At the cockpit door Indy see's the princess and smiles. The princess frowns. Shiza shouts to Indy from behind him. Indy frowns, and turns. Shiza stands with his fists motioning them to Indy. The message is clear, he wants to fight. Indy turns to see the Avalanche is fast approaching. In the plane, Sallah is trying to get Indy's attention. "Um, Indy."
Shiza swings, Indy ducks, then charges him throwing Shiza up and onto the sliding plane's wing. "Indy, I must speak with you." says Sallah. "Not now Sallah" says Indy as Shiza climbs to his feet, he jumps off of the wing and sends Indy tumbling. The force from Shiza's jump pushes the plane ahead faster. Indy see's the plane move and hears that the avalnach is almost upon them. He pulls out his bullwhip and whips the landing pontton of the plane. Direct hit! The whip locks around the leg and pulls Indy past Shiza. "Sionara Shiza."

Indy begins pulling himself toward the plane. Shiza screams with his arms in the air as the Avalanche consumes him. His screams drowned by the deafening roar of the rolling ice and snow.

Indy reaches the pontoon, pulls himself up and climbs into the cockpit. "Okay Sallah, what was so import--" Ahead, through the glass of the plane, is the straight edge of the mountain quickly approaching the plane.

"Hold on!" shouts Indy as he struggles with the door trying to close it. The door gives and slams shut just as the front of the plane goes over the edge. The heroes disappear into the abyss, the Avalanche crumbles over the edge spilling tons of ice and snow into the chasm. Then silence.

Suddenly out of the clouds, the small plane roars into view and flys off over the mountains. They made it.

Here's my idea!

Hello, Indy Fans! My name is kongisking, and I'm brand new to all of this forum and message boards stuff, and i just wanted to say hi to all of you before saying my stuff. I will eventually try and get to know you all later on the Newbies Thread.

So...here's what i would like in Indiana Jones 4. Here's the title:

Indiana Jones and the Battle Across Time.

Whaddaya think? Here's my synopsis:

In 1931, Indy is in Africa, looking for a legendary crystal said to have the power to control time. He has his faithful sidekick (insert any name here, we'll just call him Satipo for now) with him, and they enter an underground cave.

In a prologue similar to "Raider's" beginning, he must dodge brand new and inventive traps in order to reach the crystal, which is snugly sitting in a pocket in the stone wall. After outsmarting the booby traps, Indy walks up the crystal...only to then see mummy warriors smash out of the walls, wielding swords, shields, and shrieking like Naz'gul! The ancient guardians of the cave!

Indiana picks up a sword, and battles the soldiers, while Satipo backs him up with some nifty gunwork. Then the cave begins to shake, and the exit slowly begins to close. Satipo runs under the closing door, shouting at Indy to snatch the crystal and get out of there! Indy kills the last soldier, and snatches the crystal...just as it glows a ghostly blue. tHe minute he touches it, he is sucked into an incredible whirlwind of sound and hears phrases from the actual Trilogy running through his head.

Suddenly he lands hard somewhere outside of Washington D.C. He gets up, dazed and confused...only to see that everything has changed. People talk on cell phones! jet planes fly over head! Cars are sleek and have the words LEXUS on the sides! Indy doesn't know it yet, but he subconciously sent himself through time to the Modern Day!!!

He gets help fom government officials, nearly driven mad by the changes of modern U.S.A. He is shocked and horrified to learn that all of his family and girlfriends and sidekicks, etc., have passed away decades ago. Also, it turns out that when he traveled through time, he aged a couple years (thus, the reason for Harrison Ford's age). And if that wasn't enough, Indy is told by the government that he was presumed dead for decades, after disappearing in Africa in 1931, on a secret mission.

He also learns that the crystal has came forward in time with him...but has landed somewhere else. It turns out that a group of terrorists who are secretly descendants of Nazis and still worship the Third Reich have gotten ahold of the crystal, and plan to use it to alter the fate of World War II! And Indy must now stop them!!!

Does that sound like a great launchboard for a cool INDY 4? the story would also include the famous trademarks of the series, such as a scene with some sort of gross phobia, a nasty villain who deserves a scary SFX death scene, a hot girlfriend who turns out to be Indy's secret DAUGHTER!!!???, and with plenty of humor and tons of rock-solid and elaborate action scenes. It would also have (get ready, this is an insane idea!) Indy and the terrorists going back in time to the days of dinosaurs after Indy accidentally interupts the terrorists using the magic crystal to travel to 1944, and must now survive the prehistoric monsters while trying to return to their own time!

What do you guys think? I'm sorry if it sounds like an overblown Jerry Bruickheimer flick, but this was merely an idea. I think it would be great! How about you guys? If you want, you can give me some story suggestions. So tell me what you think?:) (y)

Time travel is an interesting idea for an Indiana Jones story. It was used in some Indy novels if I recall. Its a little too Sci Fi related for an Indiana Jones movie though. Also I don't think Harrison Ford can pull off playing a 32 year old given the story is set in 1931. You've got some interesting ideas there though.
